For proper chromosome segregation, sister kinetochores must interact with microtubules from opposite spindle poles (bi-orientation). To establish bi-orientation, aberrant kinetochore-microtubule attachments are disrupted (error correction) by aurora B kinase (Ipl1 in budding yeast).
