Oxygen anomaly in near surface carbon dioxide reveals deep stratospheric intrusion.

ABSTRACT: Stratosphere-troposphere exchange could be enhanced by tropopause folding, linked to variability in the subtropical jet stream. Relevant to tropospheric biogeochemistry is irreversible transport from the stratosphere, associated with deep intrusions. Here, oxygen anomalies in near surface air CO2 are used to study the irreversible transport from the stratosphere, where the triple oxygen isotopes of CO2 are distinct from those originating from the Earth's surface. We show that the oxygen anomaly in CO2 is observable at sea level and the magnitude of the signal increases during the course of our sampling period (September 2013-February 2014), concordant with the strengthening of the subtropical jet system and the East Asia winter monsoon. The trend of the anomaly is found to be 0.1‰/month (R(2) = 0.6) during the jet development period in October. Implications for utilizing the oxygen anomaly in CO2 for CO2 biogeochemical cycle study and stratospheric intrusion flux at the surface are discussed.

Unexpected variations in the triple oxygen isotope composition of stratospheric carbon dioxide.

Project description:We report observations of stratospheric CO2 that reveal surprisingly large anomalous enrichments in (17)O that vary systematically with latitude, altitude, and season. The triple isotope slopes reached 1.95 ± 0.05(1?) in the middle stratosphere and 2.22 ± 0.07 in the Arctic vortex versus 1.71 ± 0.03 from previous observations and a remarkable factor of 4 larger than the mass-dependent value of 0.52. Kinetics modeling of laboratory measurements of photochemical ozone-CO2 isotope exchange demonstrates that non-mass-dependent isotope effects in ozone formation alone quantitatively account for the (17)O anomaly in CO2 in the laboratory, resolving long-standing discrepancies between models and laboratory measurements. Model sensitivities to hypothetical mass-dependent isotope effects in reactions involving O3, O((1)D), or CO2 and to an empirically derived temperature dependence of the anomalous kinetic isotope effects in ozone formation then provide a conceptual framework for understanding the differences in the isotopic composition and the triple isotope slopes between the laboratory and the stratosphere and between different regions of the stratosphere. This understanding in turn provides a firmer foundation for the diverse biogeochemical and paleoclimate applications of (17)O anomalies in tropospheric CO2, O2, mineral sulfates, and fossil bones and teeth, which all derive from stratospheric CO2.

Construction of Oxygen-Rich Carbon Foams for Rapid Carbon Dioxide Capture.

Project description:As carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorbents, porous materials with high specific surface areas and abundant CO2-philic groups always exhibit high CO2 capacities. Based on this consensus, a category of oxygen-rich macroporous carbon foams was fabricated from macroporous resorcinol-formaldehyde resins (PRFs), which were obtained via an oil-in-water concentrated emulsion. By the active effect of potassium hydroxide (KOH) at high temperatures, the resultant carbon foams (ACRFs) possessed abundant micropores with rich oxygen content simultaneously. At the same time, most of the ACRFs could retain the marcoporous structure of their precursor. It is found that porosity of ACRFs was mainly determined by carbonization temperature, and the highest specific surface areas and total pore volume of ACRFs could reach 2046 m2/g and 0.900 cm3/g, respectively. At 273 k, ACRFs showed highest CO2 capacity as 271 mg/g at 1 bar and 91.5 mg at 15 kPa. Furthermore, it is shown that the ultra-micropore volume was mainly responsible for the CO2 capacities of ACRFs at 1 bar, and CO2 capacities at 15 kPa were mainly affected by the oxygen content. It is also found that the presence of macropores would accelerate ACRFs adsorbing CO2. This study provides ideas for designing a porous CO2 adsorbent.

Near atmospheric carbon dioxide activates plant ubiquitin cross-linking.

Project description:Background Identifying CO2-binding proteins is vital for our knowledge of CO2-regulated molecular processes. The carbamate post-translational modification is a reversible CO2-mediated adduct that can form on neutral N-terminal α-amino or lysine ε-amino groups. Methods We have developed triethyloxonium ion (TEO) as a chemical proteomics tool to trap the carbamate post-translational modification on protein covalently. We use 13C-NMR and TEO and identify ubiquitin as a plant CO2-binding protein. Results We observe the carbamate post-translational modification on the Arabidopsis thaliana ubiquitin ε-amino groups of lysines 6, 33, and 48. We show that biologically relevant near atmospheric PCO2 levels increase ubiquitin conjugation dependent on lysine 6. We further demonstrate that CO2 increases the ubiquitin E2 ligase (AtUBC5) charging step via the transthioesterification reaction in which Ub is transferred from the E1 ligase active site to the E2 active site. Conclusions and general significance Therefore, plant ubiquitin is a CO2-binding protein, and the carbamate post-translational modification represents a potential mechanism through which plant cells can respond to fluctuating PCO2.

Equatorial ionization anomaly response to lunar phase and stratospheric sudden warming.

Project description:This study examines the ionosphere response to gravitational forces of the lunar phase and dynamical disturbances of the stratospheric sudden warmings (SSWs). The total electron content (TEC) of global ionosphere maps is employed to examine responses of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) crests to lunar phases and twelve SSW events during 2000-2013. The most prominent feature in the ionosphere is the EIA, characterized by two enhanced TEC crests at low latitudes straddling the magnetic equator, which can be used to observe ionospheric plasma dynamics and structures. Results show that the EIA crest appearance time on new/full moons (first/third quarters) leads (lags) that of the overall 14-year average, which causes a pattern of TEC morning enhancements (suppressions) and afternoon suppressions (enhancements). A statistical analysis shows that SSWs can also significantly cause the early appearance of EIA crests, regardless of the lunar phase. Thus, both lunar phase and SSWs can significantly modulate the appearance time of EIA crest and ionospheric plasma dynamics and structures.

Carbon dioxide gas endoscopy of the deep gluteal space.

Project description:The treatment of hip and pelvic pain associated with abnormalities of the deep gluteal space has evolved and increasingly involves endoscopic techniques with a saline expansion medium. This investigation presents a surgical technique utilizing carbon dioxide as the insufflation medium for deep gluteal space endoscopy in 17 cadaveric hips. This technique was successful in 94% (16/17) of the hips, allowing for visualization of the sciatic nerve, posterior femoral cutaneous nerve, pudendal nerve, branch of the inferior gluteal artery crossing the sciatic nerve, piriformis muscle, hamstring tendon origin, and lesser trochanter. Our experience suggests that gas expansion presents several advantages over fluid expansion.

Oxygen harvesting from carbon dioxide: simultaneous epoxidation and CO formation.

Project description:Due to increasing concentrations in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide has, in recent times, been targeted for utilisation (Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage, CCUS). In particular, the production of CO from CO2 has been an area of intense interest, particularly since the CO can be utilized in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Herein we report that CO2 can also be used as a source of atomic oxygen that is efficiently harvested and used as a waste-free terminal oxidant for the oxidation of alkenes to epoxides. Simultaneously, the process yields CO. Utilization of the atomic oxygen does not only generate a valuable product, but also prevents the recombination of O and CO, thus increasing the yield of CO for possible application in the synthesis of higher-order hydrocarbons.

Stratospheric intrusion-influenced ozone air quality exceedances investigated in the NASA MERRA-2 Reanalysis.

Project description:Stratospheric intrusions have been the interest of decades of research for their ability to bring stratospheric ozone (O3) into the troposphere with the potential to enhance surface O3 concentrations. However, these intrusions have been misrepresented in models and reanalyses until recently, as the features of a stratospheric intrusion are best identified in horizontal resolutions of 50 km or smaller. NASA's Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications Version-2 (MERRA-2) reanalysis is a publicly-available high-resolution dataset (~50 km) with assimilated O3 that characterizes O3 on the same spatiotemporal resolution as the meteorology. We demonstrate the science capabilities of the MERRA-2 reanalysis when applied to the evaluation of stratospheric intrusions that impact surface air quality. This is demonstrated through a case study analysis of stratospheric intrusion-influenced O3 exceedences in spring 2012 in Colorado, using a combination of observations, the MERRA-2 reanalysis and the Goddard Earth Observing System Model, Version 5 (GEOS-5) simulations.

Effect of oxygen and carbon dioxide on gene expression in Bordetella bronchiseptica strain RB50

Project description:The classical bordetellae (Bordetella pertussis, B. parapertussis, and B. bronchiseptica) are obligate aerobes that use only oxygen as their terminal electron acceptor for electron transport-coupled oxidative phosphorylation. Therefore, access to oxygen is critical for these bacteria to survive. To better understand how B. bronchiseptica changes its gene regulation when faced with different levels of oxygen, we grew liquid cultures of B. bronchiseptica RB50 in ambient air, 5% oxygen, and 2% oxygen. We also measured how the presence of 5% carbon dioxide affected gene expression in these bacteria, since they are respiratory pathogens and therefore get exposed to higher carbon dioxide levels during infection than are found in ambient air.

Carbon Dioxide Solubility in Nonionic Deep Eutectic Solvents Containing Phenolic Alcohols.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are a new class of green solvents that have shown unique properties in several process applications. This study evaluates nonionic DES containing phenolic alcohols as solvents for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture applications. Potential phenolic alcohols and the molar ratio between DES constituents were preselected for experimental investigations based on the conductor-like screening model for realistic solvation (COSMO-RS). CO2 solubility was experimentally determined in two different DES, namely, L-menthol/thymol in 1:2 molar ratio and thymol/2,6-xylenol in 1:1 molar ratio, at various temperatures and pressures. CO2 solubility in the studied systems was higher than that reported in the literature for ionic DES and ionic liquids. This study demonstrates that nonionic DES containing phenolic alcohols can be excellent, inexpensive, and simple solvents for CO2 capture.
