ABSTRACT: An asymmetric epoxidation of trisubstituted ?,?-unsaturated esters is described. The oxidation utilizes a pseudo-C2-symmetric iron(II) catalyst [Fe(L*)2(CH3CN)(OTf)](OTf) and peracetic acid as oxidant, yielding the ?,?-epoxyesters in high enantiomeric purity (up to 99% ee).

Project description:The combination of Fe(OTf)(2) and novel phenanthroline ligands enables the catalytic asymmetric epoxidation of acyclic β,β-disubstituted enones, which have been a heretofore inaccessible substrate class. The reaction provides highly enantioenriched α,β-epoxyketones (up to 92% ee) that can be further converted to functionalized β-ketoaldehydes with an all-carbon quaternary center.

Lipase catalyzed epoxidation of fatty acid methyl esters derived from unsaturated vegetable oils in absence of carboxylic acid.

Project description:Nowadays the industrial chemistry reactions rely on green technologies. Enzymes as lipases are increasing its use in diverse chemical processes. Epoxidized fatty acid methyl esters obtained from transesterification of vegetable oils have recently found applications as polymer plasticizer, agrochemical, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food additives. In this research article, grapeseed, avocado and olive oils naturally containing high percents of mono and poly unsaturations were used as starting materials for the production of unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters. The effect of lauric acid as an active oxygen carrier was studied on epoxidation reactions where unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters were converted to epoxy fatty acid methyl esters using immobilized Candida antarctica Lipase type B as catalyst and hydrogen peroxide as oxygen donor at mild temperature and pressure conditions. After this study it was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR and GC-MS that the addition of lauric acid to the enzymatic reaction is unnecessary to transform the alkenes in to epoxides. It was found that quantitative conversions were possible in despite of a carboxylic acid absence.

Magnesium-catalyzed hydrosilylation of ?,?-unsaturated esters.

Project description:ToMMgHB(C6F5)3 (1, ToM = tris(4,4-dimethyl-2-oxazolinyl)phenylborate) catalyzes the 1,4-hydrosilylation of ?,?-unsaturated esters. This magnesium hydridoborate compound is synthesized by the reaction of ToMMgMe, PhSiH3, and B(C6F5)3. Unlike the transient ToMMgH formed from the reaction of ToMMgMe and PhSiH3, the borate adduct 1 persists in solution and in the solid state. Crystallographic characterization reveals tripodal coordination of the HB(C6F5)3 moiety to the six-coordinate magnesium center with a ?Mg-H-B of 141(3)°. The pathway for formation of 1 is proposed to involve the reaction of ToMMgMe and a PhSiH3/B(C6F5)3 adduct because the other possible intermediates, ToMMgH and ToMMgMeB(C6F5)3, react to give an intractable black solid and ToMMgC6F5, respectively. Under catalytic conditions, silyl ketene acetals are isolated in high yield from the addition of hydrosilanes to ?,?-unsaturated esters with 1 as the catalyst.

Project description:An iron-catalyzed enantioselective and diastereoselective intramolecular olefin aminochlorination reaction is reported (ee up to 92%, dr up to 15 : 1). In this reaction, a functionalized hydroxylamine and chloride ion are utilized as nitrogen and chlorine sources, respectively. This new method tolerates a range of synthetically valuable internal olefins that are all incompatible with existing asymmetric olefin aminochlorination methods.

Z-Trisubstituted α,β-Unsaturated Esters and Acid Fluorides through Stereocontrolled Catalytic Cross-Metathesis.

Project description:Catalytic cross-metathesis (CM) reactions that can generate trisubstituted alkenes in high stereoisomeric purity are important but remain limited in scope. Here, CM reactions are introduced that generate Z-trisubstituted α-methyl, α,β-unsaturated, alkyl and aryl esters, thiol esters, and acid fluorides. Transformations are promoted by a Mo bis-aryloxide, a monoaryloxide pyrrolide, or a monoaryloxide chloride complex; air-stable and commercially available paraffin tablets containing a Mo complex may also be used. Alkyl, aryl, and silyl carboxylic esters as well as thiol esters and acid fluoride reagents are either purchasable or can be prepared in one step. Products were obtained in 55-95% yield and in 88:12->98:2 Z/E ratio (typically >95:5). The applicability of the approach is highlighted by a two-step conversion of citronellol to an isomintlactone precursor (1.7 g, 73% yield, and 97:3 Z/E) and a single-step transformation of lanosterol acetate to 3-epi-anwuweizic acid (72% yield and 94:6 Z/E). Included are the outcomes of DFT studies, regarding several initially puzzling catalyst activity trends, providing the following information: (1) it is key that a disubstituted Mo alkylidene, generated by a competing homo-metathesis (HM) pathway, can re-enter the productive CM cycle. (2) Whereas in a CM cycle the formation of a molybdacyclobutane is likely turnover-limiting, the collapse of related metallacycles in a HM cycle is probably rate-determining. It is therefore the relative energy barrier required for these steps that determines whether CM or HM is dominant with a particular complex.

Metallophosphite-catalyzed asymmetric acylation of alpha,beta-unsaturated amides.

Project description:The l-menthone-derived TADDOL phosphite 6b catalyzes highly enantioselective conjugate additions of acyl silanes to alpha,beta-unsaturated amides. p-Methoxybenzoyl cyclohexyldimethylsilane adds to a variety of N,N-dimethyl acrylamide derivatives in the presence of the lithium salt of 6b. In many instances the alpha-silyl-gamma-ketoamide product undergoes facile enantioenrichment (to 97-99% ee) upon recrystallization. Desilylation with HF.pyr affords the formal Stetter addition products. Baeyer-Villiger oxidation of the desilylated gamma-ketoamides affords useful ester products. An X-ray diffraction study of 6b reveals that the isopropyl group of the menthone ketal influences the position of the syn-pseudoaxial phenyl group in the TADDOL structure. Through a crossover experiment, the silicon migration step in the reaction mechanism is shown to be strictly intramolecular.

Synthesis of Chiral Tertiary Boronic Esters: Phosphonate-Directed Catalytic Asymmetric Hydroboration of Trisubstituted Alkenes.

Project description:Highly enantioselective rhodium-catalyzed hydroboration of allylic phosphonates by pinacolborane affords chiral tertiary boronic esters. The β-borylated phosphonates are readily converted to chiral β- and γ-hydroxyphosphonates and aminophosphonates and to phosphonates bearing a quaternary carbon stereocenter. The utility of the latter is illustrated by the synthesis of (S)-(+)-bakuchiol methyl ether.
