Do Shale Pore Throats Have a Threshold Diameter for Oil Storage?

ABSTRACT: In this work, a nanoporous template with a controllable channel diameter was used to simulate the oil storage ability of shale pore throats. On the basis of the wetting behaviours at the nanoscale solid-liquid interfaces, the seepage of oil in nano-channels of different diameters was examined to accurately and systematically determine the effect of the pore diameter on the oil storage capacity. The results indicated that the lower threshold for oil storage was a pore throat of 20 nm, under certain conditions. This proposed pore size threshold provides novel, evidence-based criteria for estimating the geological reserves, recoverable reserves and economically recoverable reserves of shale oil. This new understanding of shale oil processes could revolutionize the related industries.

Shale pore alteration: Potential implications for hydrocarbon extraction and CO2 storage.

Project description:Shale unconventional reservoirs are currently and expected to remain substantial fossil fuel resources in the future. As CO2 is being considered to enhance oil recovery and for storage purposes in unconventional reservoirs, it is unclear how the shale matrix and fractures will react with CO2 and water during these efforts. Here, we examined the Utica Shale and its reactivity with CO2 and water using scanning electron microscopy, N2 and CO2 sorption isotherms, mercury intrusion porosimetry, and X-ray scattering methods. During CO2 exposure, the presence of water can inhibit CO2 migration into the shale matrix, promote carbonate dissolution, and dramatically change the pore scale variability by opening and closing pore networks over the macro- to nano-scale range. These alterations in the shale matrix could impact flow pathways and ultimately, oil recovery factors and carbon storage potential.

Solvent-pore interactions in the Eagle Ford shale formation.

Project description:The effect of solvent extraction on pore space was examined on a suite of samples from the Eagle Ford Shale Formation with varying lithologies and maturities. Several solvents ─toluene, cyclohexane, methanol, dichloromethane, and hydrochloric acid─ were contacted with shale samples, extracting the compatible organic matter. The porosity in these extracted shale samples was compared to unmodified samples. The amount and type of organic matter extracted were determined using Gas Chromatography ─ Mass Spectrometry, and the porosity was determined by (Ultra) Small Angle Neutron Scattering. Mostly alkanes and aromatics were detected in the extracts, but other portions of bitumen may also have been present. Only higher molecular weight alkanes were extracted with hydrochloric acid, suggesting that physical dissolution of carbonate minerals may have liberated this portion of organic matter and the solvent was not able to penetrate the bitumen and kerogen to extract the lower molecular weight alkanes. Additionally, a decrease in porosity with extraction was observed and attributed to a dominant mechanism of kerogen swelling due to kerogen-solvent interaction.

Pore types, genesis, and evolution model of lacustrine oil-prone shale: a case study of the Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation, Songliao Basin, NE China.

Project description:A comprehensive characterisation of the pore structure in shale oil reservoirs is essential for forecasting oil production and exploration risks. This study forecasted these risks in the oil-rich Songliao Basin using combination of high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy and quantitative X-ray diffraction to analyze the pore genesis and evolution mode within the first member of the Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation (K2qn1). The results showed the dominance of inorganic pores over organic pores, wherein diagenetic processes, such as compaction, pressure solution, and cementation, were responsible for the destruction of pore structure in the formation. Notably, the pores formed by dissolution and shrinkage cracks resulting from clay mineral transformation improved the oil storage space. Furthermore, according to the geochemical data and clay composition, the K2qn1 shale is in the middle diagenetic stage A, which can be further subdivided into A1 and A2 stages from top to bottom. The porosity slowly decreased in both sub-stages A1 and A2, wherein the decrease was stable in the latter. The diagenetic observations in this study are significant for the exploration of unconventional shale oil in petroliferous basins worldwide.

Total organic carbon content estimation for mixed shale using Xgboost method and implication for shale oil exploration.

Project description:In this study, the Xgboost method is employed for TOC estimation in mixed carbonate and siliciclastic shale from the Hashan area, Junggar Basin. The results show that this approach is effective for TOC estimation in this area although the model performance is not very excellent with a correlation coefficient of 0.54 between measured TOC and predicted TOC values, likely due to a small samples dataset. Therefore, the PCA method is applied to debase dimension of well log data from five dimensional to two-dimensional data, which enhances the correlation coefficient between the predicted and measured TOC from 0.54 to 0.68. Based on the model, the isopleth maps of TOC distributions in Fengcheng Formation were redrawn showing two shale oil exploration targets, which likely correspond to two depositional centers of this strata. All the same, the model in this work provides reliable data for shale oil evaluation in the study area and a good example under similar geological setting.

Fractal characteristics of shale pore structure and its influence on seepage flow.

Project description:The migration law of shale gas has a significant influence on the seepage characteristics of shale, and the flow of the gas is closely related to the pore structure. To explore the influence of shale pore parameters on permeability in different diffusion zones, the pore structure of the shale in the Niutitang Formation in Guizhou, China, was analysed based on liquid nitrogen adsorption experiments and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments. The relationship among fractal dimension, organic carbon content (TOC) and BET-specific surface area was analysed based on the fractal dimension of shale pores calculated using the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill model. Shale permeability was calculated using the Knudsen number (Kn) and permeability equation, and the influence of the fractal dimension and porosity in different diffusion zones on shale permeability was analysed. Previous studies have shown that: (i) the pores of shale in the Niutitang Formation, Guizhou are mainly distributed within 1-100 nm, with a small total pore volume per unit mass, average pore diameter, large BET specific surface area and porosity; (ii) fractal dimension has a negative correlation with average pore diameter and TOC content and a quadratic relationship with BET specific surface area; and (iii) permeability has a positive correlation with Kn, porosity and fractal dimension. In the transitional diffusion zone, fractal dimension and porosity have a significant impact on permeability. In the Knudsen diffusion zone, porosity has no obvious effect on permeability. The methodologies and results presented will enable more accurate characterization of the complexity of pore structures of porous media and allow further understanding of the seepage law of shale gas.

Evolution of pore structure and fractal characteristics of marine shale during electromagnetic radiation.

Project description:Electromagnetic radiation has been proposed to non-aqueously stimulate shale formations, which can generate fractures and enhance the porosity of the matrix. The proposed method consumes electricity and thereby possesses significant advantages for sustainable and environmental hydrocarbon production. In this study, we investigate the pore structure variations of marine shale during electromagnetic radiation. First, the prepared marine shale samples are exposed to electromagnetic radiation for different times; an infrared thermometer monitors the temperatures. Then, the nitrogen adsorption/desorption technique is applied to examine the evolutions of the pore structure. Next, a scanning electron microscope is adopted to reveal the morphology and identify newly developed pores. Lastly, fractal analyses are performed to quantify pore structure variations. The sample exhibits quick temperature rises, whose temperature reaches about 300 °C after 5 min of electromagnetic radiation. The elevated temperature causes clay dehydration, thermal expansion, and organic matter decomposition, leading to significant changes in pore structures. The nitrogen adsorption/desorption characteristics demonstrate enhancements in pore spaces, including volume, size, and surface area. Fractal analyses show that the pores become rougher and exhibit less heterogeneity after electromagnetic radiation. The obtained results demonstrate a great potential of using electromagnetic radiation to enhance the porosity of shale rocks.

Fusion pore diameter regulation by cations modulating local membrane anisotropy.

Project description:The fusion pore is an aqueous channel that is formed upon the fusion of the vesicle membrane with the plasma membrane. Once the pore is open, it may close again (transient fusion) or widen completely (full fusion) to permit vesicle cargo discharge. While repetitive transient fusion pore openings of the vesicle with the plasma membrane have been observed in the absence of stimulation, their frequency can be further increased using a cAMP-increasing agent that drives the opening of nonspecific cation channels. Our model hypothesis is that the openings and closings of the fusion pore are driven by changes in the local concentration of cations in the connected vesicle. The proposed mechanism of fusion pore dynamics is considered as follows: when the fusion pore is closed or is extremely narrow, the accumulation of cations in the vesicle (increased cation concentration) likely leads to lipid demixing at the fusion pore. This process may affect local membrane anisotropy, which reduces the spontaneous curvature and thus leads to the opening of the fusion pore. Based on the theory of membrane elasticity, we used a continuum model to explain the rhythmic opening and closing of the fusion pore.

Micro/Nano-pore Network Analysis of Gas Flow in Shale Matrix.

Project description:The gas flow in shale matrix is of great research interests for optimized shale gas extraction. The gas flow in the nano-scale pore may fall in flow regimes such as viscous flow, slip flow and Knudsen diffusion. A 3-dimensional nano-scale pore network model was developed to simulate dynamic gas flow, and to describe the transient properties of flow regimes. The proposed pore network model accounts for the various size distributions and low connectivity of shale pores. The pore size, pore throat size and coordination number obey normal distribution, and the average values can be obtained from shale reservoir data. The gas flow regimes were simulated using an extracted pore network backbone. The numerical results show that apparent permeability is strongly dependent on pore pressure in the reservoir and pore throat size, which is overestimated by low-pressure laboratory tests. With the decrease of reservoir pressure, viscous flow is weakening, then slip flow and Knudsen diffusion are gradually becoming dominant flow regimes. The fingering phenomenon can be predicted by micro/nano-pore network for gas flow, which provides an effective way to capture heterogeneity of shale gas reservoir.

Study of the protein complex, pore diameter, and pore-forming activity of the Borrelia burgdorferi P13 porin.

Project description:P13 is one of the major outer membrane proteins of Borrelia burgdorferi. Previous studies described P13 as a porin. In the present study some structure and function aspects of P13 were studied. P13 showed according to lipid bilayer studies a channel-forming activity of 0.6 nanosiemens in 1 m KCl. Single channel and selectivity measurements demonstrated that P13 had no preference for either cations or anions and showed no voltage-gating up to ±100 mV. Blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was used to isolate and characterize the P13 protein complex in its native state. The complex had a high molecular mass of about 300 kDa and was only composed of P13 monomers. The channel size was investigated using non-electrolytes revealing an apparent diameter of about 1.4 nm with a 400-Da molecular mass cut-off. Multichannel titrations with different substrates reinforced the idea that P13 forms a general diffusion channel. The identity of P13 within the complex was confirmed by second dimension SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, mass spectrometry, and the use of a p13 deletion mutant strain. The results suggested that P13 is the protein responsible for the 0.6-nanosiemens pore-forming activity in the outer membrane of B. burgdorferi.

Optimization of production system of shale oil development in Ordos basin, China.

Project description:In this paper, production system (PS) of shale oil is optimized according to production data and indoor experiments, including core and fluid tests. Results showed that: ① Pressure drop rate at wellhead is a reasonable reference for the determination of post-fracture shut-in duration (PFSID). When pressure at a wellhead of horizontal well is relatively stable and the pressure drop less than 0.1 MPa per day for three consecutive days, PFSID ends; ② Flowback intensity of fracturing fluid affects the effectiveness of proppant underground, thus flowback intensity can be determined by the critical flow rate and safety factor of each proppant; ③ Flowback intensity should be varied during different development stages, which could be divided into four according to production gas and oil ratio(GOR) of a shale oil horizontal well: low, medium-high, high and high-low production GOR. During the stage of low production GOR, ratio of flow pressure and saturation pressure should be maintained greater than 1.0, and the initial daily liquid productivity for a hundred-meter oil-bearing lateral length in a horizontal well is 2.4 ~ 2.9 m3/d; and during the medium-high production GOR, high production GOR and high-low production GOR stages, the responding initial daily liquid productivity should be maintained between 0.8 ~ 1.0 or less than 0.8 respectively.
