Labor market returns to an early childhood stimulation intervention in Jamaica.

ABSTRACT: A substantial literature shows that U.S. early childhood interventions have important long-term economic benefits. However, there is little evidence on this question for developing countries. We report substantial effects on the earnings of participants in a randomized intervention conducted in 1986-1987 that gave psychosocial stimulation to growth-stunted Jamaican toddlers. The intervention consisted of weekly visits from community health workers over a 2-year period that taught parenting skills and encouraged mothers and children to interact in ways that develop cognitive and socioemotional skills. The authors reinterviewed 105 out of 129 study participants 20 years later and found that the intervention increased earnings by 25%, enough for them to catch up to the earnings of a nonstunted comparison group identified at baseline (65 out of 84 participants).

Project description:This article presents a dataset to investigate the determinants of firms' decision for primary share issuance and the effects of market timing on primary share issues in the Brazilian stock market. The data refer to Brazilian nonfinancial firms that issued primary shares (IPOs and SEOs) in the 2004-2015 period. The data were gathered from the online bases of Economatica® and the São Paulo Securities, Commodities and Futures Exchange (BM&FBovespa). The final sample was composed of 123 firms and 165 primary share issues: 97 initial public offerings and 68 follow-on offerings. The dataset was developed to support a model that captures market timing behavior through cumulative abnormal returns and shows the effects of this behavior on the amount of proceeds raised. The dataset contains subsamples and different analysis time windows, processed and unprocessed data. Researchers can use the dataset for future research and comparisons with other markets and models. The related research article using part of the current dataset was published under the following title: "Effects of market timing on primary share issues in the Brazilian capital market" (Gomes et al.).

Prosociality predicts labor market success around the world.

Project description:A large literature points to the importance of prosociality for the well-being of societies and individuals. However, most of this work is based on observations from western, educated, industrialized, rich, and democratic (WEIRD) societies, questioning the generalizability of these findings. Here we present a global investigation of the relation between prosociality and labor market success. Our analysis uses experimentally validated measures of prosociality and is based on about 80,000 individuals in 76 representative country samples. We show a sizable and robust positive relation between prosociality and labor market success around the world that does not systematically differ across continents or by countries' economic development. These findings generalize the positive relation between prosociality and labor market success to a wide geographical context.

Twin Peaks: Covid-19 and the labor market.

Project description:This paper develops a choice-theoretic equilibrium model of the labor market in the presence of a pandemic. It includes heterogeneity in productivity, age and the ability to work from home. Worker and firm behavior changes in the presence of the virus, which itself has equilibrium consequences for the infection rate. The model is calibrated to the UK and counterfactual lockdown measures are evaluated. We find a different response in both the evolution of the virus and the labor market with different lockdown policies. A laissez-faire approach results in lives lost and acts as negative shock to the economy. A lockdown policy, absent any other intervention, will reduce the lives lost but increase the economic burden. Consistent with recent evidence, we find that the economic costs from lockdown are most felt by those earning the least. Finally, we introduce a job retention scheme as implemented by the UK Government and find that it spreads the economic hardship more equitably.

Can Labor Market Policies Reduce Deaths of Despair?

Project description:Do minimum wages and the earned income tax credit (EITC) mitigate rising "deaths of despair?" We leverage state variation in these policies over time to estimate event study and difference-in-differences models of deaths due to drug overdose, suicide, and alcohol-related causes. Our causal models find no significant effects on drug or alcohol-related mortality, but do find significant reductions in non-drug suicides. A 10 percent minimum wage increase reduces non-drug suicides among low-educated adults by 2.7 percent, and the comparable EITC figure is 3.0 percent. Placebo tests and event-study models support our causal research design. Increasing both policies by 10 percent would likely prevent a combined total of more than 700 suicides each year.

Asymmetric dependence between stock market returns and news during COVID-19 financial turmoil.

Project description:•I investigate the stock market's reaction to coronavirus news in the top six most affected countries by the pandemic.•The fake news exerts a negative nonlinear influence on the inferior and the middle quantiles throughout the distribution of returns.•The media coverage leads to a decrease in returns across middle and superior quantiles and has no effects on the inferior ones.•During COVID19 turmoil superior quantiles of returns distribution exhibit negative dependence on past performances, while inferior and middle quantiles are not affected by this phenomenon.•The gold return has a positive correlation with the stock markets, which amplifies during extreme bearish and bullish periods indicating that it does not behave as a "Safe Havens" asset.

COVID-19 pandemic effect on trading and returns: Evidence from the Chinese stock market.

Project description:Using a daily foreign and institution flows data, this paper studies how institutional and foreign investors respond to the COVID-19 pandemic events in China. The results indicate that during the COVID-19 crisis foreign investors play a market stabilization role showing significant negative feedback trading, whereas institution investors do not stabilize the market. And compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, foreign investors even exhibit stronger negative feedback trading. Further analyses confirm that foreign investors' negative feedback is mainly driven by their response to negative returns. Moreover, both institutional and foreign investors' trading show stronger forecastability of future returns during the pandemic period. And the negative returns after foreigners' selling and positive returns after institutional buying are much stronger during the crisis period.

Informing early intervention: preschool predictors of anxiety disorders in middle childhood.

Project description:BACKGROUND: To inform early intervention practice, the present research examines how child anxiety, behavioural inhibition, maternal overinvolvement, maternal negativity, mother-child attachment and maternal anxiety, as assessed at age four, predict anxiety at age nine. METHOD: 202 children (102 behaviourally inhibited and 100 behaviourally uninhibited) aged 3-4 years were initially recruited and the predictors outlined above were assessed. Diagnostic assessments, using the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule, were then conducted five years later. RESULTS: Behavioural inhibition, maternal anxiety, and maternal overinvolvement were significant predictors of clinical anxiety, even after controlling for baseline anxiety (p<.05). No significant effect of negativity or attachment security was found over and above baseline anxiety (p>.1). CONCLUSIONS: Preschool children who show anxiety, are inhibited, have overinvolved mothers and mothers with anxiety disorders are at increased risk for anxiety in middle childhood. These factors can be used to identify suitable participants for early intervention and can be targeted within intervention programs.

Childhood Sporting Activities and Adult Labour-Market Outcomes.

Project description:We here ask whether childhood sport participation is positively correlated with adult labour-market outcomes. There are many potential channels for this effect, although, as usual, identifying a causal relationship is difficult. We appeal to two widely-separated waves of Add Health data to map out the correlation between childhood sports and a number of adult labour-market outcomes. We show that different types of childhood sports are associated with both managerial responsibilities and autonomy at work when adult. We take the endogeneity of sport seriously, and appeal to a variety of techniques, including the use of data on siblings, in order to obtain estimates that are as close to unbiased as possible. Last, we compare the effect of sporting activities to that of other leisure activities.

Ambient particulate air pollution and daily stock market returns and volatility in 47 cities worldwide.

Project description:We studied globally representative data to quantify how daily fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations influence both daily stock market returns and volatility. Time-series analysis was applied on 47 city-level environmental and economic datasets and meta-analysis of the city-specific estimates was used to generate a global summary effect estimate. We found that, on average, a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 reduces same day returns by 1.2% (regression coefficient: - 0.012, 95% confidence interval: - 0.021, - 0.003) Based on a meta-regression, these associations are stronger in areas where the average PM2.5 concentrations are lower, the mean returns are higher, and where the local stock market capitalization is low. Our results suggest that a 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure increases stock market volatility by 0.2% (regression coefficient 0.002, 95% CI 0.000, 0.004), but the city-specific estimates were heterogeneous. Meta-regression analysis did not explain much of the between-city heterogeneity. Our results provide global evidence that short-term exposure to air pollution both reduces daily stock market returns and increases volatility.

Childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia and indicators of early immune stimulation: a Childhood Leukemia International Consortium study.

Project description:The associations between childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and several proxies of early stimulation of the immune system, that is, day-care center attendance, birth order, maternally reported common infections in infancy, and breastfeeding, were investigated by using data from 11 case-control studies participating in the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium (enrollment period: 1980-2010). The sample included 7,399 ALL cases and 11,181 controls aged 2-14 years. The data were collected by questionnaires administered to the parents. Pooled odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were estimated by unconditional logistic regression adjusted for age, sex, study, maternal education, and maternal age. Day-care center attendance in the first year of life was associated with a reduced risk of ALL (odds ratio = 0.77, 95% confidence interval: 0.71, 0.84), with a marked inverse trend with earlier age at start (P < 0.0001). An inverse association was also observed with breastfeeding duration of 6 months or more (odds ratio = 0.86, 95% confidence interval: 0.79, 0.94). No significant relationship with a history of common infections in infancy was observed even though the odds ratio was less than 1 for more than 3 infections. The findings of this large pooled analysis reinforce the hypothesis that day-care center attendance in infancy and prolonged breastfeeding are associated with a decreased risk of ALL.
