Data in support of crystal structures of highly-ordered long-period stacking-ordered phases with 18R, 14H and 10H-type stacking sequences in the Mg-Zn-Y system.

ABSTRACT: The crystal structures of highly-ordered Mg-Zn-Y long-period stacking-ordered (LPSO) phases with the 18R, 14H and 10H-type stacking sequences have been investigated by atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and transmission electron microscopy (Kishida et al., 2015) [1]. This data article provides supporting materials for the crystal structure analysis based on the crystallographic theory of the order-disorder (OD) structure and the crystallographic information obtained through the structural optimization for various simple polytypes of the highly-ordered Mg-Zn-Y LPSO phases with the 18R, 14H and 10H-type stacking sequences by first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Degradation behavior of Mg-based biomaterials containing different long-period stacking ordered phases.

Project description:Long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phases play an essential role in the development of magnesium alloys because they have a direct effect on mechanical and corrosion properties of the alloys. The LPSO structures are mostly divided to 18R and 14H. However, to date there are no consistent opinions about their degradation properties although both of them can improve mechanical properties. Herein we have successfully obtained two LPSO phases separately in the same Mg-Dy-Zn system and comparatively investigated the effect of different LPSO phases on degradation behavior in 0.9 wt.% NaCl solution. Our results demonstrate that a fine metastable 14H-LPSO phase in grain interior is more effective to improve corrosion resistance due to the presence of a homogeneous oxidation film and rapid film remediation ability. The outstanding corrosion resistant Mg-Dy-Zn based alloys with a metastable 14H-LPSO phase, coupled with low toxicity of alloying elements, are highly desirable in the design of novel Mg-based biomaterials, opening up a new avenue in the area of bio-Mg.

A formation criterion for Order-Disorder (OD) phases of the Long-Period Stacking Order (LPSO)-type in Mg-Al-RE (Rare Earth) Ternary Systems.

Project description:The formation of OD (order-disorder) phases of the LPSO (long-period stacking ordered)-type in Mg-Al-RE (RE (rare earth) = Y, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Dy, Ho, Er and Yb) ternary systems has been investigated for both as-solidified and annealed conditions. The OD phase is found to form in those systems with RE = Y, Nd, Sm, Dy, Ho and Er. The Mg-Al-RE OD phase formed is of the 18R-LPSO-type consisting of 6-layer structural blocks with the RE enrichment occurring in the four consecutive atomic layers in the structural block in the form of the Al6RE8 L12-type atomic clusters. The Mg-Al-RE OD phases are found to be stabilized by the inclusion of any atoms (either Mg, Al or RE) in the central site of the Al6RE8 L12-type atomic cluster. The occupancy ratio of the central site among Mg, Al and RE atoms varies with the RE element, so that the occupancy ratio of RE atoms increases with the increase in the atomic number of the RE element in particular for the late rare-earth elements. Based on the results obtained, a criterion based on the volume of the Al6RE8 atomic cluster is proposed to predict the formation of the Mg-Al-RE OD phases.

Computational Study on Selective PDE9 Inhibitors on PDE9-Mg/Mg, PDE9-Zn/Mg, and PDE9-Zn/Zn Systems.

Project description:PDE9 inhibitors have been studied to validate their potential to treat diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and erectile dysfunction. In this report, we have selected highly potent previously reported selective PDE9 inhibitors BAY73-6691R, BAY73-6691S, 28r, 28s, 3r, 3s, PF-0447943, PF-4181366, and 4r to elucidate the differences in their interaction patterns in the presence of different metal systems such as Zn/Mg, Mg/Mg, and Zn/Zn. The initial complexes were generated by molecular docking followed by molecular dynamics simulation for 100 ns in triplicate for each system to understand the interactions' stability. The results were carefully analyzed, focusing on the ligands' non-bonded interactions with PDE9 in different metal systems.

A combined experimental and computational study on the reaction of fluoroarenes with Mg-Mg, Mg-Zn, Mg-Al and Al-Zn bonds.

Project description:Through a combined experimental and computational (DFT) approach, the reaction mechanism of the addition of fluoroarenes to Mg-Mg bonds has been determined as a concerted SNAr-like pathway in which one Mg centre acts as a nucleophile and the other an electrophile. The experimentally determined Gibbs activation energy for the addition of C6F6 to a Mg-Mg bond of a molecular complex, ΔG‡298 K(experiment) = 21.3 kcal mol-1 is modelled by DFT with the ωB97X functional, ΔG‡298 K(DFT) = 25.7 kcal mol-1. The transition state for C-F activation involves a polarisation of the Mg-Mg bond and significant negative charge localisation on the fluoroarene moiety. This transition state is augmented by stabilising closed-shell Mg···F ortho interactions that, in combination with the known trends in C-F and C-M bond strengths in fluoroarenes, provide an explanation for the experimentally determined preference for C-F bond activation to occur at sites flanked by ortho-fluorine atoms. The effect of modification of both the ligand coordination sphere and the nature and polarity of the M-M bond (M = Mg, Zn, Al) on C-F activation has been investigated. A series of highly novel β-diketiminate stabilised complexes containing Zn-Mg, Zn-Zn-Zn, Zn-Al and Mg-Al bonds has been prepared, including the first crystallographic characterisation of a Mg-Al bond. Reactions of these new M-M containing complexes with perfluoroarenes were conducted and modelled by DFT. C-F bond activation is dictated by the steric accessibility, and not the polarity, of the M-M bond. The more open coordination complexes lead to enhanced Mg···F ortho interactions which in turn lower the energy of the transition states for C-F bond activation.

Coexisting commensurate and incommensurate charge ordered phases in CoO.

Project description:The subtle interplay of strong electronic correlations in a distorted crystal lattice often leads to the evolution of novel emergent functionalities in the strongly correlated materials (SCM). Here, we unravel such unprecedented commensurate (COM) and incommensurate (ICOM) charge ordered (CO) phases at room temperature in a simple transition-metal mono-oxide, namely CoO. The electron diffraction pattern unveils a COM ([Formula: see text]=[Formula: see text] and ICOM ([Formula: see text]) periodic lattice distortion. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) captures unidirectional and bidirectional stripe patterns of charge density modulations. The widespread phase singularities in the phase-field of the order parameter (OP) affirms the abundant topological disorder. Using, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we demystify the underlying electronic mechanism. The DFT study shows that a cation disordering ([Formula: see text]) stabilizes Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion and localized aliovalent [Formula: see text] states in CoO. Therefore, the lattice distortion accompanied with mixed valence states ([Formula: see text]) states introduces CO in CoO. Our findings offer an electronic paradigm to engineer CO to exploit the associated electronic functionalities in widely available transition-metal mono-oxides.

Biocompatibility Assessment of Novel Bioresorbable Alloys Mg-Zn-Se and Mg-Zn-Cu for Endovascular Applications: <i>In- Vitro</i> Studies.

Project description:Previous studies have shown that using biodegradable magnesium alloys such as Mg-Zn and Mg-Zn-Al possess the appropriate mechanical properties and biocompatibility to serve in a multitude of biological applications ranging from endovascular to orthopedic and fixation devices. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biocompatibility of novel as-cast magnesium alloys Mg-1Zn-1Cu wt.% and Mg-1Zn-1Se wt.% as potential implantable biomedical materials, and compare their biologically effective properties to a binary Mg-Zn alloy. The cytotoxicity of these experimental alloys was evaluated using a tetrazolium based- MTS (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3-carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-(4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium) assay and a lactate dehydrogenase membrane integrity assay (LDH). The MTS assay was performed on extract solutions obtained from a 30-day period of alloy immersion and agitation in simulated body fluid to evaluate the major degradation products eluted from the alloy materials. Human foreskin fibroblast cell growth on the experimental magnesium alloys was evaluated for a 72 hour period, and cell death was quantified by measuring lactate dehydrogenase concentrations. Both Mg-Zn-Se and Mg-Zn-Cu alloys exhibit low cytotoxicity levels which are suitable for biomaterial applications. The Mg-Zn-Cu alloy was found to completely degrade within 72 hours, resulting in lower human foreskin fibroblast cell viability. The Mg-Zn-Se alloy was shown to be less cytotoxic than both the Mg-Zn-Cu and Mg-Zn alloys.

Role of polyunsaturated phospholipids in liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered phases.

Project description:Polyunsaturated phospholipids interact complexly with other membrane components. We have examined pair interactions among ternary lipid bilayers composed of saturated DPPC, polyunsaturated PLePC, and cholesterol in the liquid-ordered and the liquid-disordered phases by all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that PLePC exhibits strong repulsion with DPPC and cholesterol in the liquid-disordered phase. When the bilayer changes to the liquid-ordered phase, the repulsion of PLePC with DPPC and cholesterol reduces significantly. The phase state of the bilayer which affects the order of acyl tails as well as their density distributions along the bilayer normal is a key factor regulating the role of PLePC in lipid mixtures. Polyunsaturated phospholipids play a strong repulsive role in the liquid-disordered phase but a weak role in the liquid-ordered phase.

Identifying magnetic phases in chemically ordered and disordered FeAl thin films.

Project description:Direct magnetic writing of ferromagnetic nanoscale elements provides an alternative pathway for potential application in data storage or spintronic devices. Magnetic patterning due to local chemical disordering of Fe60Al40 thin films results in adjacent nanoscale regions that possess two different phases, viz. a low-magnetization and high-coercive chemically ordered phase (non-irradiated ferromagnetic area, NIFM) and a high-magnetization and low-coercive chemically disordered phase (irradiated ferromagnetic area, IMF). Depending on the volume of NIFM and IFM phases, different interaction mechanisms were revealed. It was shown that the modulated films of the coexisting magnetic phases do not lead to exchange coupling in most cases. Evidence for exchange-spring behaviour, however, was found. Moreover, both magneto-structural phases at low temperatures show spin-glass-like properties. Understanding the influence of chemical ordering on magnetic properties is crucial for the advancement of the functionalities of spintronic devices and for the development of alloys with controllable magnetic properties.

Ordered phases of ethylene adsorbed on charged fullerenes and their aggregates.

Project description:In spite of extensive investigations of ethylene adsorbed on graphite, bundles of nanotubes, and crystals of fullerenes, little is known about the existence of commensurate phases; they have escaped detection in almost all previous work. Here we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of ethylene adsorbed on free C60 and its aggregates. The ion yield of [Formula: see text] measured by mass spectrometry reveals a propensity to form a structurally ordered phase on monomers, dimers and trimers of C60 in which all sterically accessible hollow sites over carbon rings are occupied. Presumably the enhancement of the corrugation by the curvature of the fullerene surface favors this phase which is akin to a hypothetical 1 × 1 phase on graphite. Experimental data also reveal the number of molecules in groove sites of the C60 dimer through tetramer. The identity of the sites, adsorption energies and orientations of the adsorbed molecules are determined by molecular dynamics calculations based on quantum chemical potentials, as well as density functional theory. The decrease in orientational order with increasing temperature is also explored in the simulations whereas in the experiment it is impossible to vary the temperature.

Permeability of membranes in the liquid ordered and liquid disordered phases.

Project description:The functional significance of ordered nanodomains (or rafts) in cholesterol rich eukaryotic cell membranes has only begun to be explored. This study exploits the correspondence of cellular rafts and liquid ordered (Lo) phases of three-component lipid bilayers to examine permeability. Molecular dynamics simulations of Lo phase dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC), and cholesterol show that oxygen and water transit a leaflet through the DOPC and cholesterol rich boundaries of hexagonally packed DPPC microdomains, freely diffuse along the bilayer midplane, and escape the membrane along the boundary regions. Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments provide critical validation: the measured ratio of oxygen concentrations near the midplanes of liquid disordered (Ld) and Lo bilayers of DPPC/DOPC/cholesterol is 1.75 ± 0.35, in very good agreement with 1.3 ± 0.3 obtained from simulation. The results show how cellular rafts can be structurally rigid signaling platforms while remaining nearly as permeable to small molecules as the Ld phase.
