Conversion of biomass-derived sorbitol to glycols over carbon-materials supported Ru-based catalysts.

ABSTRACT: Ruthenium (Ru) supported on activated carbon (AC) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was carried out in the hydrogenolysis of sorbitol to ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,2-propanediol (1,2-PD) under the promotion of tungsten (WOx) species and different bases. Their catalytic activities and glycols selectivities strongly depended on the support properties and location of Ru on CNTs, owning to the altered metal-support interactions and electronic state of ruthenium. Ru located outside of the tubes showed excellent catalytic performance than those encapsulated inside the nanotubes. Additionally, the introduction of WOx into Ru/CNTs significantly improved the hydrogenolysis activities, and a complete conversion of sorbitol with up to 60.2% 1,2-PD and EG yields was obtained on RuWOx/CNTs catalyst upon addition of Ca(OH)2. Stability study showed that this catalyst was highly stable against leaching and poisoning and could be recycled several times.

Catalytic Conversion of Biomass-Derived 1,2-Propanediol to Propylene Oxide over Supported Solid-Base Catalysts.

Project description:A series of supported alkali metal salts were investigated as catalysts to produce propylene oxide (PO) from biomass-derived 1,2-propanediol via dehydrative epoxidation in a solid-gas reaction system. The effects of supports, cations, and anions in the alkali metal salts and calcination temperature were investigated by X-ray diffraction and CO2-temperature-programmed desorption. The results indicate the catalysts with relative mild basicity having higher yields of PO. The highest yield of PO is 58.2% from reactions at 400 °C at an atmospheric pressure over KNO3/SiO2. In addition, the catalyst could be reused after calcination in air at 550 °C.

Hydroformylation of vinyl acetate and cyclohexene over TiO2 nanotube supported Rh and Ru nanoparticle catalysts.

Project description:TiO2 nanotube (TNT) supported Rh and Ru nanoparticle catalysts were prepared via impregnation-photoreducing procedure and characterized with various methods. Their catalytic performances in hydroformylation were evaluated by using vinyl acetate and cyclohexene as substrates. The results indicate that the presence of Ru in the catalysts can enhance the catalytic activity of catalysts for the hydroformylation of vinyl acetate, but do not play the same role in the hydroformylation of cyclohexene; the sequence of loading metal has a significant effect on the catalytic performances of the title catalysts. Additionally, it is found that Ru/TNTs shows catalytic activity for the hydroformylation of vinyl acetate though it does not for the hydroformylation of cyclohexene.

N2O decomposition properties of Ru catalysts supported on various oxide materials and SnO2.

Project description:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a stratospheric ozone depleting greenhouse gas that has global warming potential. As the catalytic decomposition of N2O is one of the most promising techniques for N2O emissions abatement, in this study, for this purpose the properties of Ru supported on various oxide materials were investigated under excess O2 conditions, and the identities of the N2O adsorption species on the catalysts were confirmed. To clarify the correlation between the catalytic properties and N2O decomposition activity, the supported Ru catalysts were characterised by means of powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence measurements, energy-dispersive X-ray mapping and several gas sorption techniques. The results showed that the redox properties for Ru (RuO2) at low temperature are closely associated with N2O decomposition activity. The local structures, optimal Ru loading and N2O adsorption species of the novel Ru/SnO2 catalysts were studied and they showed high activity for N2O decomposition.

Oxido- and Dioxido-Vanadium(V) Complexes Supported on Carbon Materials: Reusable Catalysts for the Oxidation of Cyclohexane.

Project description:Oxidovanadium(V) and dioxidovanadium(V) compounds, [VO(OEt)L] (1) and [Et3NH][VO2L] (2), were synthesized using an aroylhydrazone Schiff base (5-bromo-2-hydroxybenzylidene)-2-hydroxybenzohydrazide (H2L). They were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), (1H and 51V) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Both complexes were immobilized on functionalized carbon nanotubes and activated carbon. The catalytic performances of 1 and 2, homogenous and anchored on the supports, were evaluated for the first time towards the MW-assisted peroxidative oxidation (with tert-butylhydroperoxide, TBHP) of cyclohexane under heterogeneous conditions. The immobilization of 1 and 2 on functionalized carbon materials improved the efficiency of catalytic oxidation and allowed the catalyst recyclability with a well-preserved catalytic activity.

Creating solvation environments in heterogeneous catalysts for efficient biomass conversion.

Project description:Chemical transformations are highly sensitive toward changes in the solvation environment and solvents have long been used to control their outcome. Reactions display unique performance in solvents like ionic liquids or DMSO, however, isolating products from them is cumbersome and energy-consuming. Here, we develop promising alternatives by constructing solvent moieties into porous materials, which in turn serve as platforms for introducing catalytic species. Due to the high density of the solvent moieties, these porous solid solvents (PSSs) retain solvation ability, which greatly influences the performance of incorporated active sites via concerted non-covalent substrate-catalyst interactions. As a proof-of-concept, the -SO3H-incorporated PSSs exhibit high yields of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural in THF, which exceeds the best results reported using readily separable solvents and even rivals those in ionic liquids or DMSO. Given the wide application, our strategy provides a step forward towards sustainable synthesis by eliminating the concerns with separation unfriendly solvents.

Interfacial charge distributions in carbon-supported palladium catalysts.

Project description:Controlling the charge transfer between a semiconducting catalyst carrier and the supported transition metal active phase represents an elite strategy for fine turning the electronic structure of the catalytic centers, hence their activity and selectivity. These phenomena have been theoretically and experimentally elucidated for oxide supports but remain poorly understood for carbons due to their complex nanoscale structure. Here, we combine advanced spectroscopy and microscopy on model Pd/C samples to decouple the electronic and surface chemistry effects on catalytic performance. Our investigations reveal trends between the charge distribution at the palladium-carbon interface and the metal's selectivity for hydrogenation of multifunctional chemicals. These electronic effects are strong enough to affect the performance of large (~5 nm) Pd particles. Our results also demonstrate how simple thermal treatments can be used to tune the interfacial charge distribution, hereby providing a strategy to rationally design carbon-supported catalysts.Control over charge transfer in carbon-supported metal nanoparticles is essential for designing new catalysts. Here, the authors show that thermal treatments effectively tune the interfacial charge distribution in carbon-supported palladium catalysts with consequential changes in hydrogenation performance.

Hydrogenation of Lactic Acid to 1,2-Propanediol over Ru-Based Catalysts.

Project description:The catalytic hydrogenation of lactic acid to 1,2-propanediol with supported Ru catalysts in water was investigated. The influence of catalyst support (activated carbon, ?-Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, and CeO2) and promoters (Pd, Au, Mo, Re, Sn) on the catalytic performance was evaluated. Catalytic tests revealed that TiO2 yields the best Ru catalysts. With a monometallic Ru/TiO2 catalyst, a 1,2-propanediol yield of 70?% at 79?% lactic acid conversion was achieved at 130?°C after 20?h reaction. Minor byproducts of the hydrogenation reaction were propionic acid, ethanol, 1-propanol, and 2-propanol. For the bimetallic catalysts, the addition of Pd and Au slightly enhanced the performance of Ru/TiO2, whereas the addition of common hydrogenation promoters such as Re, Mo, and Sn impaired the activity.

Graphitic Carbon Nitride Supported Catalysts for Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells.

Project description:Graphitic carbon nitrides are investigated for developing highly durable Pt electrocatalyst supports for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). Three different graphitic carbon nitride materials were synthesized with the aim to address the effect of crystallinity, porosity, and composition on the catalyst support properties: polymeric carbon nitride (gCNM), poly(triazine) imide carbon nitride (PTI/Li(+)Cl(-)), and boron-doped graphitic carbon nitride (B-gCNM). Following accelerated corrosion testing, all graphitic carbon nitride materials are found to be more electrochemically stable compared to conventional carbon black (Vulcan XC-72R) with B-gCNM support showing the best stability. For the supported catalysts, Pt/PTI-Li(+)Cl(-) catalyst exhibits better durability with only 19% electrochemical surface area (ECSA) loss versus 36% for Pt/Vulcan after 2000 scans. Superior methanol oxidation activity is observed for all graphitic carbon nitride supported Pt catalysts on the basis of the catalyst ECSA.

Conversion of Polyolefin Waste to Liquid Alkanes with Ru-Based Catalysts under Mild Conditions.

Project description:Chemical upcycling of waste polyolefins via hydrogenolysis offers unique opportunities for selective depolymerization compared to high temperature thermal deconstruction. Here, we demonstrate the hydrogenolysis of polyethylene into liquid alkanes under mild conditions using ruthenium nanoparticles supported on carbon (Ru/C). Reactivity studies on a model n-octadecane substrate showed that Ru/C catalysts are highly active and selective for the hydrogenolysis of C(sp3)-C(sp3) bonds at temperatures ranging from 200 to 250 °C. Under optimal conditions of 200 °C in 20 bar H2, polyethylene (average M w ∼ 4000 Da) was converted into liquid n-alkanes with yields of up to 45% by mass after 16 h using a 5 wt % Ru/C catalyst with the remaining products comprising light alkane gases (C1-C6). At 250 °C, nearly stoichiometric yields of CH4 were obtained from polyethylene over the catalyst. The hydrogenolysis of long chain, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and a postconsumer LDPE plastic bottle to produce C7-C45 alkanes was also achieved over Ru/C, demonstrating the feasibility of this reaction for the valorization of realistic postconsumer plastic waste. By identifying Ru-based catalysts as a class of active materials for the hydrogenolysis of polyethylene, this study elucidates promising avenues for the valorization of plastic waste under mild conditions.

Facile synthesis of supported Ru-Triphos catalysts for continuous flow application in selective nitrile reduction.

Project description:The selective catalytic hydrogenation of nitriles represents an important but challenging transformation for many homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Herein, we report the efficient and modular solid-phase synthesis of immobilized Triphos-type ligands in very high yields, involving only minimal work-up procedures. The corresponding supported ruthenium-Triphos catalysts are tested in the hydrogenation of various nitriles. Under mild conditions and without the requirement of additives, the tunable supported catalyst library provides selective access to both primary amines and secondary imines. Moreover, the first application of a Triphos-type catalyst in a continuous flow process is presented demonstrating high catalyst life-time over at least 195 hours without significant activity loss.
