Lateral forces on circularly polarizable particles near a surface.

ABSTRACT: Optical forces allow manipulation of small particles and control of nanophotonic structures with light beams. While some techniques rely on structured light to move particles using field intensity gradients, acting locally, other optical forces can 'push' particles on a wide area of illumination but only in the direction of light propagation. Here we show that spin-orbit coupling, when the spin of the incident circularly polarized light is converted into lateral electromagnetic momentum, leads to a lateral optical force acting on particles placed above a substrate, associated with a recoil mechanical force. This counterintuitive force acts in a direction in which the illumination has neither a field gradient nor propagation. The force direction is switchable with the polarization of uniform, plane wave illumination, and its magnitude is comparable to other optical forces.

Project description:Light can exert radiation pressure on any object it encounters and that resulting optical force can be used to manipulate particles. It is commonly assumed that light should move a particle forward and indeed an incident plane wave with a photon momentum ħk can only push any particle, independent of its properties, in the direction of k. Here we demonstrate, using full-wave simulations, that an anomalous lateral force can be induced in a direction perpendicular to that of the incident photon momentum if a chiral particle is placed above a substrate that does not break any left-right symmetry. Analytical theory shows that the lateral force emerges from the coupling between structural chirality (the handedness of the chiral particle) and the light reflected from the substrate surface. Such coupling induces a sideway force that pushes chiral particles with opposite handedness in opposite directions.

Plasmonic linear nanomotor using lateral optical forces.

Project description:Optical force is a powerful tool to actuate micromachines. Conventional approaches often require focusing and steering an incident laser beam, resulting in a bottleneck for the integration of the optically actuated machines. Here, we propose a linear nanomotor based on a plasmonic particle that generates, even when illuminated with a plane wave, a lateral optical force due to its directional side scattering. This force direction is determined by the orientation of the nanoparticle rather than a field gradient or propagation direction of the incident light. We demonstrate the arrangements of the particles allow controlling the lateral force distributions with the resolution beyond the diffraction limit, which can produce movements, as designed, of microobjects in which they are embedded without shaping and steering the laser beam. Our nanomotor to engineer the experienced force can open the door to a new class of micro/nanomechanical devices that can be entirely operated by light.

Transverse spin forces and non-equilibrium particle dynamics in a circularly polarized vacuum optical trap.

Project description:We provide a vivid demonstration of the mechanical effect of transverse spin momentum in an optical beam in free space. This component of the Poynting momentum was previously thought to be virtual, and unmeasurable. Here, its effect is revealed in the inertial motion of a probe particle in a circularly polarized Gaussian trap, in vacuum. Transverse spin forces combine with thermal fluctuations to induce a striking range of non-equilibrium phenomena. With increasing beam power we observe (i) growing departures from energy equipartition, (ii) the formation of coherent, thermally excited orbits and, ultimately, (iii) the ejection of the particle from the trap. As well as corroborating existing measurements of spin momentum, our results reveal its dynamic effect. We show how the under-damped motion of probe particles in structured light fields can expose the nature and morphology of optical momentum flows, and provide a testbed for elementary non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

Trajectory Surface Hopping for a Polarizable Embedding QM/MM Formulation.

Project description:We present the implementation of trajectory surface-hopping nonadiabatic dynamics for a polarizable embedding QM/MM formulation. Time-dependent density functional theory was used at the quantum mechanical level of theory, whereas the molecular mechanics description involved the polarizable AMOEBA force field. This implementation has been obtained by integrating the surface-hopping program Newton-X NS with an interface between the Gaussian 16 and the Tinker suites of codes to calculate QM/AMOEBA energies and forces. The implementation has been tested on a photoinduced electron-driven proton-transfer reaction involving pyrimidine and a hydrogen-bonded water surrounded by a small cluster of water molecules and within a large water droplet.

Surface chemistry on a polarizable surface: Coupling of CO with KTaO<sub>3</sub>(001).

Project description:Polarizable materials attract attention in catalysis because they have a free parameter for tuning chemical reactivity. Their surfaces entangle the dielectric polarization with surface polarity, excess charge, and orbital hybridization. How this affects individual adsorbed molecules is shown for the incipient ferroelectric perovskite KTaO3. This intrinsically polar material cleaves along (001) into KO- and TaO2-terminated surface domains. At TaO2 terraces, the polarity-compensating excess electrons form a two-dimensional electron gas and can also localize by coupling to ferroelectric distortions. TaO2 terraces host two distinct types of CO molecules, adsorbed at equivalent lattice sites but charged differently as seen in atomic force microscopy/scanning tunneling microscopy. Temperature-programmed desorption shows substantially stronger binding of the charged CO; in density functional theory calculations, the excess charge favors a bipolaronic configuration coupled to the CO. These results pinpoint how adsorption states couple to ferroelectric polarization.

Imaging Nanoscale Electromagnetic Near-Field Distributions Using Optical Forces.

Project description:We demonstrate the application of Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for mapping optical near-fields with nanometer resolution, limited only by the AFM probe geometry. By detecting the optical force between a gold coated AFM probe and its image dipole on a glass substrate, we profile the electric field distributions of tightly focused laser beams with different polarizations. The experimentally recorded focal force maps agree well with theoretical predictions based on a dipole-dipole interaction model. We experimentally estimate the aspect ratio of the apex of gold coated AFM probe using only optical forces. We also show that the optical force between a sharp gold coated AFM probe and a spherical gold nanoparticle of radius 15 nm, is indicative of the electric field distribution between the two interacting particles. Photo Induced Force Microscopy (PIFM) allows for background free, thermal noise limited mechanical imaging of optical phenomenon over wide range of wavelengths from Visible to RF with detection sensitivity limited only by AFM performance.

Theory of Surface Forces in Multivalent Electrolytes.

Project description:Aqueous electrolyte solutions containing multivalent ions exhibit various intriguing properties, including attraction between like-charged colloidal particles, which results from strong ion-ion correlations. In contrast, the classical Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory of colloidal stability, based on the Poisson-Boltzmann mean-field theory, always predicts a repulsive electrostatic contribution to the disjoining pressure. Here, we formulate a general theory of surface forces, which predicts that the contribution to the disjoining pressure resulting from ion-ion correlations is always attractive and can readily dominate over entropic-induced repulsions for solutions containing multivalent ions, leading to the phenomenon of like-charge attraction. Ion-specific short-range hydration interactions, as well as surface charge regulation, are shown to play an important role at smaller separation distances but do not fundamentally change these trends. The theory is able to predict the experimentally observed strong cohesive forces reported in cement pastes, which result from strong ion-ion correlations involving the divalent calcium ion.

Near-Field Probing of Optical Superchirality with Plasmonic Circularly Polarized Luminescence for Enhanced Bio-Detection.

Project description:Nanophotonic platforms in theory uniquely enable < femtomoles of chiral biological and pharmaceutical molecules to be detected, through the highly localized changes in the chiral asymmetries of the near fields that they induce. However, current chiral nanophotonic based strategies are intrinsically limited because they rely on far field optical measurements that are sensitive to a much larger near field volume, than that influenced by the chiral molecules. Consequently, they depend on detecting small changes in far field optical response restricting detection sensitivities. Here, we exploit an intriguing phenomenon, plasmonic circularly polarized luminescence (PCPL), which is an incisive local probe of near field chirality. This allows the chiral detection of monolayer quantities of a de novo designed peptide, which is not achieved with a far field response. Our work demonstrates that by leveraging the capabilities of nanophotonic platforms with the near field sensitivity of PCPL, optimal biomolecular detection performance can be achieved, opening new avenues for nanometrology.

Emanating Jets As Shaped by Surface Tension Forces.

Project description:We show that emanating jets can be regarded as growing liquid towers, which are shaped by the twofold action of surface tension: first the emanated fluid is being accelerated back by surface tension force, herewith creating the boundary conditions to solve the shape of the liquid tower as a solution of an equation mathematically related to the hydrostatic Young-Laplace equation, known to give solutions for the shape of pending and sessile droplets, and wherein the only relevant forces are gravity g and surface tension ?. We explain that for an emanating jet under specific constraints all mass parts with density ? will experience a uniform time dependent acceleration a( t). An asymptotic solution is subsequently numerically derived by making the corresponding Young-Laplace type equation dimensionless and by dividing all lengths by a generalized time dependent capillary length ?c( t) = [Formula: see text]. The time dependent surface tension ?( t) can be derived by measuring both time dependent acceleration a( t) and time dependent capillary length ?c( t). Jetting experiments with water and coffee show that the dynamic surface tension behavior according to the emanating jet method and with the well-known maximum bubble pressure method are the same, herewith verifying the proposed model.
