Project description:Unlike many single-celled organisms, the growth of fission yeast cells within a cell cycle is not exponential. It is rather characterized by three distinct phases (elongation, septation, and reshaping), each with a different growth rate. Experiments also showed that the distribution of cell size in a lineage can be bimodal, unlike the unimodal distributions measured for the bacterium Escherichia coli. Here we construct a detailed stochastic model of cell size dynamics in fission yeast. The theory leads to analytic expressions for the cell size and the birth size distributions, and explains the origin of bimodality seen in experiments. In particular, our theory shows that the left peak in the bimodal distribution is associated with cells in the elongation phase, while the right peak is due to cells in the septation and reshaping phases. We show that the size control strategy, the variability in the added size during a cell cycle, and the fraction of time spent in each of the three cell growth phases have a strong bearing on the shape of the cell size distribution. Furthermore, we infer all the parameters of our model by matching the theoretical cell size and birth size distributions to those from experimental single-cell time-course data for seven different growth conditions. Our method provides a much more accurate means of determining the size control strategy (timer, adder or sizer) than the standard method based on the slope of the best linear fit between the birth and division sizes. We also show that the variability in added size and the strength of size control in fission yeast depend weakly on the temperature but strongly on the culture medium. More importantly, we find that stronger size homeostasis and larger added size variability are required for fission yeast to adapt to unfavorable environmental conditions.

Project description:Measurement errors are inevitable in practice, but they are not considered in the existing process performance index. Therefore, we propose an estimation method of process performance index for the two-parameter exponential distribution with measurement errors to fill this gap. In this paper, the relationship between the unobservable actual value and measurement value is considered as full error model, and the maximum likelihood estimation method is considered to obtain the unknown parameters. In addition, we also use the Bootstrap method to construct confidence intervals of process performance index. The performance of the proposed estimation is investigated in terms of bias, mean square error (MSE) and average interval length. Simulation results show that the proposed estimator outperforms other estimators. Finally, an example of the mileage data of the military personnel carrier is given to illustrate the implementation of the proposed estimation method.

Project description:In this study, a new flexible lifetime model called Burr XII moment exponential (BXII-ME) distribution is introduced. We derive some of its mathematical properties including the ordinary moments, conditional moments, reliability measures and characterizations. We employ different estimation methods such as the maximum likelihood, maximum product spacings, least squares, weighted least squares, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling methods for estimating the model parameters. We perform simulation studies on the basis of the graphical results to see the performance of the above estimators of the BXII-ME distribution. We verify the potentiality of the BXII-ME model via monthly actual taxes revenue and fatigue life applications.

Project description:Von Willebrand Factor (VWF) is a multimeric protein crucial for hemostasis. Under shear flow, it acts as a mechanosensor responding with a size-dependent globule-stretch transition to increasing shear rates. Here, we quantify for the first time, to our knowledge, the size distribution of recombinant VWF and VWF-eGFP using a multilateral approach that involves quantitative gel analysis, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, and total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy. We find an exponentially decaying size distribution of multimers for recombinant VWF as well as for VWF derived from blood samples in accordance with the notion of a step-growth polymerization process during VWF biosynthesis. The distribution is solely described by the extent of polymerization, which was found to be reduced in the case of the pathologically relevant mutant VWF-IIC. The VWF-specific protease ADAMTS13 systematically shifts the VWF size distribution toward smaller sizes. This dynamic evolution is monitored using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and compared to a computer simulation of a random cleavage process relating ADAMTS13 concentration to the degree of VWF breakdown. Quantitative assessment of VWF size distribution in terms of an exponential might prove to be useful both as a valuable biophysical characterization and as a possible disease indicator for clinical applications.

Project description:The physiological parameters characterizing human capacities (the ability to move, reproduce or perform tasks) evolve with ageing: performance is limited at birth, increases to a maximum and then decreases back to zero at the day of death. Physical and intellectual skills follow such a pattern. Here, we investigate the development of sport and chess performances during the lifetime at two different scales: the individual athletes' careers and the world record by age class in 25 Olympic sports events and in grandmaster chess players. For all data sets, a biphasic development of growth and decline is described by a simple model that accounts for 91.7% of the variance at the individual level and 98.5% of the variance at the species one. The age of performance peak is computed at 26.1 years old for the events studied (26.0 years old for track and field, 21.0 years old for swimming and 31.4 years old for chess). The two processes (growth and decline) are exponential and start at age zero. Both were previously demonstrated to happen in other human and non-human biological functions that evolve with age. They occur at the individual and species levels with a similar pattern, suggesting a scale invariance property.

Project description:Filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) and medical masks are widely used to reduce the inhalation exposure of airborne particulates and biohazardous aerosols. Their protective capacity largely depends on the fraction of these that are filtered from the incoming air volume. While the performance and physics of different filter materials have been the topic of intensive study, less well understood are the effects of mask sealing. To address this, we introduce an approach to calculate the influence of face-seal leakage on filtration ratio and fit factor based on an analytical model and a finite element method (FEM) model, both of which take into account time-dependent human respiration velocities. Using these, we calculate the filtration ratio and fit factor for a range of ventilation resistance values relevant to filter materials, 500-2500 Pa?s?m-1, where the filtration ratio and fit factor are calculated as a function of the mask gap dimensions, with good agreement between analytical and numerical models. The results show that the filtration ratio and fit factor are decrease markedly with even small increases in gap area. We also calculate particle filtration rates for N95 FFRs with various ventilation resistances and two commercial FFRs exemplars. Taken together, this work underscores the critical importance of forming a tight seal around the face as a factor in mask performance, where our straightforward analytical model can be readily applied to obtain estimates of mask performance.

Project description:In this paper, a new modification of the Lomax distribution is considered named as Lomax exponential distribution (LE). The proposed distribution is quite flexible in modeling the lifetime data with both decreasing and increasing shapes (non-monotonic). We derive the explicit expressions for the incomplete moments, quantile function, the density function for the order statistics etc. The Renyi entropy for the proposed distribution is also obtained. Moreover, the paper discusses the estimates of the parameters by the usual maximum likelihood estimation method along with determining the information matrix. In addition, the potentiality of the proposed distribution is illustrated using two real data sets. To judge the performance of the model, the goodness of fit measures, AIC, CAIC, BIC, and HQIC are used. Form the results it is concluded that the proposed model performs better than the Lomax distribution, Weibull Lomax distribution, and exponential Lomax distribution.

Project description:Many distributions have been used in flood frequency analysis (FFA) for fitting the flood extremes data. However, as shown in the paper, the scatter of Polish data plotted on the moment ratio diagram shows that there is still room for a new model. In the paper, we study the usefulness of the generalized exponential (GE) distribution in flood frequency analysis for Polish Rivers. We investigate the fit of GE distribution to the Polish data of the maximum flows in comparison with the inverse Gaussian (IG) distribution, which in our previous studies showed the best fitting among several models commonly used in FFA. Since the use of a discrimination procedure without the knowledge of its performance for the considered probability density functions may lead to erroneous conclusions, we compare the probability of correct selection for the GE and IG distributions along with the analysis of the asymptotic model error in respect to the upper quantile values. As an application, both GE and IG distributions are alternatively assumed for describing the annual peak flows for several gauging stations of Polish Rivers. To find the best fitting model, four discrimination procedures are used. In turn, they are based on the maximized logarithm of the likelihood function (K procedure), on the density function of the scale transformation maximal invariant (QK procedure), on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov statistics (KS procedure) and the fourth procedure based on the differences between the ML estimate of 1% quantile and its value assessed by the method of moments and linear moments, in sequence (R procedure). Due to the uncertainty of choosing the best model, the method of aggregation is applied to estimate of the maximum flow quantiles.

Project description:Fe/Ti-layered double hydroxide (LDH) has been hydrothermally prepared and characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for evaluation of its structure, morphology, and optical properties. The purpose of doping Ti4+ with Fe3+ toward the synthesis of Fe/Ti LDH is to extend the absorption of the nanomaterial to longer wavelength, which is known to exhibit higher electron transport performance. To provide a practical realization, electron transport modeling across the band gap has been interpreted using exponential, Gaussian, and mixed Gauss-exponential distribution. The conduction band energy (E C) has been calculated by using the observed values of band gap (E g) and ξ-potential of the LDH. A detailed study has been undertaken to investigate the pattern of theoretical density of the LDH on the basis of unknown (E C = 0) and known (calculated) values of E C. Fermi-Dirac statistics has been used extensively for estimating the occupancy probability of electron (e-)-hole (h+) pair formation within the valence and conduction bands, respectively, with different temperatures, as well as for given energy levels. Monte Carlo simulations have also been performed to evaluate the suitability of the choice of the model, on the basis of the probability of availability of e-s within the conduction band. To provide a practical realization of the suggested models, electronic transition across the band gap of Fe/Ti LDH has been extensively investigated.

Project description:ObjectivesTotal depressive symptom scores in the general population have been reported to follow an exponential distribution except at the lowest end of the range of scores. To verify the hypothesis that total depressive symptom scores follow the distribution of the latent trait, we performed a simulation study of depressive symptom scoring modeled after the Revised Clinical Interview Schedule (CIS-R). To simulate the scoring of ordinal scale items in CIS-R, two sets of random numbers were generated, one expressing the degree of the latent trait of depressive symptoms and another expressing the threshold for each item. Random latent trait numbers greater than those of item thresholds indicated the presence of specific symptoms.ResultsWhen exponential distribution was set to the latent trait's random numbers and each item's threshold had a certain degree of standard deviation, simulated total depressive symptom scores showed a linear pattern except at the lowest end of scores with a log-normal scale. Our results suggest that total depressive symptom scores follow the distribution of the latent trait of depressive symptoms due to the property of ordinal scales, which is characterized by individual differences in the threshold of each item.
