Surface-enabled propulsion and control of colloidal microwheels.

ABSTRACT: Propulsion at the microscale requires unique strategies such as the undulating or rotating filaments that microorganisms have evolved to swim. These features however can be difficult to artificially replicate and control, limiting the ability to actuate and direct engineered microdevices to targeted locations within practical timeframes. An alternative propulsion strategy to swimming is rolling. Here we report that low-strength magnetic fields can reversibly assemble wheel-shaped devices in situ from individual colloidal building blocks and also drive, rotate and direct them along surfaces at velocities faster than most other microscale propulsion schemes. By varying spin frequency and angle relative to the surface, we demonstrate that microwheels can be directed rapidly and precisely along user-defined paths. Such in situ assembly of readily modified colloidal devices capable of targeted movements provides a practical transport and delivery tool for microscale applications, especially those in complex or tortuous geometries.

Electric-field-induced assembly and propulsion of chiral colloidal clusters.

Project description:Chiral molecules with opposite handedness exhibit distinct physical, chemical, or biological properties. They pose challenges as well as opportunities in understanding the phase behavior of soft matter, designing enantioselective catalysts, and manufacturing single-handed pharmaceuticals. Microscopic particles, arranged in a chiral configuration, could also exhibit unusual optical, electric, or magnetic responses. Here we report a simple method to assemble achiral building blocks, i.e., the asymmetric colloidal dimers, into a family of chiral clusters. Under alternating current electric fields, two to four lying dimers associate closely with a central standing dimer and form both right- and left-handed clusters on a conducting substrate. The cluster configuration is primarily determined by the induced dipolar interactions between constituent dimers. Our theoretical model reveals that in-plane dipolar repulsion between petals in the cluster favors the achiral configuration, whereas out-of-plane attraction between the central dimer and surrounding petals favors a chiral arrangement. It is the competition between these two interactions that dictates the final configuration. The theoretical chirality phase diagram is found to be in excellent agreement with experimental observations. We further demonstrate that the broken symmetry in chiral clusters induces an unbalanced electrohydrodynamic flow surrounding them. As a result, they rotate in opposite directions according to their handedness. Both the assembly and propulsion mechanisms revealed here can be potentially applied to other types of asymmetric particles. Such kinds of chiral colloids will be useful for fabricating metamaterials, making model systems for both chiral molecules and active matter, or building propellers for microscale transport.

Multidentate-protected colloidal gold nanocrystals: pH control of cooperative precipitation and surface layer shedding.

Project description:Colloidal gold nanocrystals (AuNCs) with broad size tunability and unusual pH-sensitive properties have been synthesized using multidentate polymer ligands. Because they contain both carboxylic functional groups and sterically hindered aliphatic chains, the multidentate ligands can not only reduce gold precursors but also stabilize gold nanoclusters during nucleation and growth. The "as-synthesized" AuNCs are protected by an inner coordinating layer and an outer polymer layer and are soluble in water and polar solvents. When the solution pH is lowered by just 0.6 units (from 4.85 to 4.25), the particles undergo a dramatic cooperative transition from being soluble to insoluble, allowing rapid isolation, purification, and redispersion of the multidentate-protected AuNCs. A surprising finding is that when a portion of the surface carboxylate groups are neutralized by protonation, the particles irreversibly shed their outer polymer layer and become soluble in nonpolar organic solvents. Furthermore, the multidentate polymer coatings are permeable to small organic molecules, in contrast to the tightly packed self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols on gold. These insights are important in regard to the design of "smart" imaging and therapeutic nanoparticles that are activated by small pH changes in the tumor interstitial space or endocytic organelles.

Surface melting of a colloidal glass.

Project description:Despite their technological relevance, a full microscopic understanding of glasses is still lacking. This applies even more to their surfaces whose properties largely differ from that of the bulk material. Here, we experimentally investigate the surface of a two-dimensional glass as a function of the effective temperature. To yield a free surface, we use an attractive colloidal suspension of micron-sized particles interacting via tunable critical Casimir forces. Similar to crystals, we observe surface melting of the glass, i.e., the formation of a liquid film at the surface well below the glass temperature. Underneath, however, we find an unexpected region with bulk density but much faster particle dynamics. It results from connected clusters of highly mobile particles which are formed near the surface and deeply percolate into the underlying material. Because its thickness can reach several tens of particle diameters, this layer may elucidate the poorly understood properties of thin glassy films which find use in many technical applications.

Active Surface with Dynamic Microstructures and Hierarchical Gradient Enabled by in situ Pneumatic Control.

Project description:An active surface with an on-demand tunable topography holds great potential for various applications, such as reconfigurable metasurfaces, adaptive microlenses, soft robots and four-dimensional (4D) printing. Despite extensive progress, to achieve refined control of microscale surface structures with large-amplitude deformation remains a challenge. Moreover, driven by the demand of constructing a large area of microstructures with increased complexity-for instance, biomimetic functional textures bearing a three-dimensional (3D) gradient-novel strategies are highly desired. Here, we develop an active surface with a dynamic topography and three-tier height gradient via a strain-tunable mismatching-bonding process. Pneumatic actuation allows for rapid, reversible and uniform regulation of surface microstructures at the centimeter scale. The in-situ modulation facilitates large-amplitude deformation with a maximum tuning range of 185 μm. Moreover, the structural gradient can be modulated by programming the strain value of the bonding process. With our strategy, another two types of surfaces with a four-tier gradient and without gradient were also prepared. By providing active modulation and design flexibility of complicated microstructures, the proposed strategy would unlock more opportunities for a wealth of novel utilizations.

Machine Learning Enabled Image Analysis of Time-Temperature Sensing Colloidal Arrays.

Project description:Smart, responsive materials are required in various advanced applications ranging from anti-counterfeiting to autonomous sensing. Colloidal crystals are a versatile material class for optically based sensing applications owing to their photonic stopband. A careful combination of materials synthesis and colloidal mesostructure rendered such systems helpful in responding to stimuli such as gases, humidity, or temperature. Here, an approach is demonstrated to simultaneously and independently measure the time and temperature solely based on the inherent material properties of complex colloidal crystal mixtures. An array of colloidal crystals, each featuring unique film formation kinetics, is fabricated. Combined with machine learning-enabled image analysis, the colloidal crystal arrays can autonomously record isothermal heating events - readout proceeds by acquiring photographs of the applied sensor using a standard smartphone camera. The concept shows how the progressing use of machine learning in materials science has the potential to allow non-classical forms of data acquisition and evaluation. This can provide novel insights into multiparameter systems and simplify applications of novel materials.

Self-adaptive and efficient propulsion of Ray sperms at different viscosities enabled by heterogeneous dual helixes.

Project description:We disclose a peculiar rotational propulsion mechanism of Ray sperms enabled by its unusual heterogeneous dual helixes with a rigid spiral head and a soft tail, named Heterogeneous Dual Helixes (HDH) model for short. Different from the conventional beating propulsion of sperm, the propulsion of Ray sperms is from both the rotational motion of the soft helical tail and the rigid spiral head. Such heterogeneous dual helical propulsion style provides the Ray sperm with high adaptability in viscous solutions along with advantages in linearity, straightness, and bidirectional motion. This HDH model is further corroborated by a miniature swimming robot actuated via a rigid spiral head and a soft tail, which demonstrates similar superiorities over conventional ones in terms of adaptability and efficiency under the same power input. Such findings expand our knowledge on microorganisms' motion, motivate further studies on natural fertilization, and inspire engineering designs.

Colloidal nanocrystals fluoresced by surface coordination complexes.

Project description:Colloidal Nanocrystals (NCs) with fluorescence originating from surface complexes are successfully prepared. The components of these NCs range from insulator, semiconductor to metal, with either pure phase, doped or core/shell structures. The photoluminescence of these NCs can be reversibly tuned across the visible to infrared spectrum, and even allow multi-color emission. A light emitting device is fabricated and a new in vivo cell imaging method is performed to demonstrate the power of this technology for emerging applications.

Surface premelting and melting of colloidal glasses.

Project description:The nature of liquid-to-glass transition is a major puzzle in science. A similar challenge exists in glass-to-liquid transition, i.e., glass melting, especially for the poorly investigated surface effects. Here, we assemble colloidal glasses by vapor deposition and melt them by tuning particle attractions. The structural and dynamic parameters saturate at different depths, which define a surface liquid layer and an intermediate glassy layer. The power-law growth of both layers and melting front behaviors at different heating rates are similar to crystal premelting and melting, suggesting that premelting and melting can be generalized to amorphous solids. The measured single-particle kinetics reveal various features and confirm theoretical predictions for glass surface layer.

Laser propulsion of nanobullets by adiabatic compression of surface plasmon polaritons.

Project description:Laser propulsion and guide of nanosized objects is fundamental for a wide number of applications. These applications are often limited by the fact that the optical forces acting on nanoparticles are almost negligible even in the favorable case of metallic particles and hence large laser powers are needed to accelerate and guide nanosize devices in practical applications. Furthermore, metallic nanoparticles exhibit strong absorption bands and scattering and this makes more difficult controlling nanopropulsion. Thus, finding some mechanism enhancing the optomechanical interaction at the nanoscale controlled by laser is specifically challenging and pivotal. Here, we demonstrate a novel physical effect where the well-known adiabatic localization of the enhanced plasmonic surface field on the apex of metallic nanocones produces a significant optical pressure employable as a propulsive mechanism. The proposed method gives the possibility to develop new photonics devices to accelerate metallic nanobullets over long distances for a variety of applications.

Surface Properties of Colloidal Particles Affect Colloidal Self-Assembly in Evaporating Self-Lubricating Ternary Droplets.

Project description:In this work, we unravel the role of surface properties of colloidal particles on the formation of supraparticles (clusters of colloidal particles) in a colloidal Ouzo droplet. Self-lubricating colloidal Ouzo droplets are an efficient and simple approach to form supraparticles, overcoming the challenge of the coffee stain effect in situ. Supraparticles are an efficient route to high-performance materials in various fields, from catalysis to carriers for therapeutics. Yet, the role of the surface of colloidal particles in the formation of supraparticles using Ouzo droplets remains unknown. Therefore, we used silica particles as a model system and compared sterically stabilized versus electrostatically stabilized silica particles─positively and negatively charged. Additionally, we studied the effect of hydration. Hydrated negatively charged silica particles and sterically stabilized silica particles form supraparticles. Conversely, dehydrated negatively charged silica particles and positively charged amine-coated particles form flat film-like deposits. Notably, the assembly process is different for all the four types of particles. The surface modifications alter (a) the contact line motion of the Ouzo droplet and (b) the particle-oil and particle-substrate interactions. These alterations modify the particle accumulation at the various interfaces, which ultimately determines the shape of the final deposit. Thus, by modulating the surface properties of the colloidal particles, we can tune the shape of the final deposit, from a spheroidal supraparticle to a flat deposit. In the future, this approach can be used to tailor the supraparticles for applications such as optics and catalysis, where the shape affects the functionality.
