Data characterizing tensile behavior of cenosphere/HDPE syntactic foam.

ABSTRACT: The data set presented is related to the tensile behavior of cenosphere reinforced high density polyethylene syntactic foam composites "Processing of cenosphere/HDPE syntactic foams using an industrial scale polymer injection molding machine" (Bharath et al., 2016) [1]. The focus of the work is on determining the feasibility of using an industrial scale polymer injection molding (PIM) machine for fabricating syntactic foams. The fabricated syntactic foams are investigated for microstructure and tensile properties. The data presented in this article is related to optimization of the PIM process for syntactic foam manufacture, equations and procedures to develop theoretical estimates for properties of cenospheres, and microstructure of syntactic foams before and after failure. Included dataset contains values obtained from the theoretical model.

Project description:Microstructural observations and compressive property datasets of metal matrix syntactic foam core sandwich composite at quasi-static and high strain rate (HSR) conditions (525-845 s(-1)) are provided. The data supplied in this article includes sample preparation procedure prior to scanning electron and optical microscopy as well as the micrographs. The data used to construct the stress-strain curves and the derived compressive properties of all specimens in both quasi-static and HSR regions are included. Videos of quasi-static compressive failure and that obtained by a high speed image acquisition system during deformation and failure of HSR specimen are also included.

Data characterizing flexural properties of Al/Al2O3 syntactic foam core metal matrix sandwich.

Project description:Microstructural observations and flexural property datasets are provided for aluminum alloy matrix syntactic foam core sandwich composites. The tests are conducted in three-point bending configuration. The data supplied includes methods used for conducting microscopy and mechanical testing. Raw load-displacement data, which is used to plot stress-strain graphs, obtained during the flexural test is also included. Images from a DSLR camera are stitched together to form a detailed failure sequencing video. Failure of specimens is captured in sequential images using a digital camera. These images are stitched together to develop a video for visualization of failure mechanisms. Calculations are also included for a theoretical model that is used to estimate the flexural properties of the syntactic foam core sandwich.

Effect of Layer Thickness in Layered Aluminum Matrix Syntactic Foam.

Project description:This work experimentally investigates the effect of layered structure on the static and impact response of a new layered syntactic foam developed for impact energy absorption. The layered syntactic foam had the same density of 1.6 g/cm3 and the same components of 50% large spheres (L) and 50% small spheres (S) with different structures from two layers to five layers. The impact response and energy absorption were investigated by drop-weight impact tests. Under static loading, more layers led to higher yield stress and lower energy absorption. There were three types of progressive failures of layered syntactic form under impact loading. The failure propagation was examined and found to be dependent on the layer number and impact energy. Interestingly, layered syntactic foam absorbed more energy than both of its components in terms of ductility. The ductility of layered syntactic foam decreased with the increase in layer number. The peak stress of layered syntactic foam increased with the increase in layer number. Two-layered syntactic foam LS had the highest ductility under 60 J/g impact, as well as an energy absorption of 35 J/g, compared to other layered syntactic foams. Specifically, its component L had a ductility under 70 J/g and an energy absorption of 25 J/g, while component S had a ductility under 10 J/g and an energy absorption of 10 J/g.

Damage Characterization during Compression in a Perlite-Aluminum Syntactic Foam.

Project description:Aluminum matrix (Al99.5) syntactic foam containing expanded perlite particles was produced using the pressure infiltration technique. The dominant deformation mechanisms during compression of this foam were determined by sequential k-means analysis of the acoustic emission data. Since the different deformation mechanisms were concurrently active even at small strains, successive unloading and reloading measurement was proposed for cluster identification. The repetitive unloading and reloading allowed us to identify two mechanical parameters, namely the unloading modulus and the loss for unloading-reloading cycles. Based on the correlations among the strain localization within the specimen, the acoustic emission results, the changes in these mechanical parameters, and the transition from quasi-elastic deformation to plasticity were revealed in this material.

Influence of Partially Debonded Interface on Elasticity of Syntactic Foam: A Numerical Study.

Project description:The effect of interfacial bonding of glass hollow microspheres and a polymer matrix on the elastic properties of syntactic foam was investigated using representative volume element (RVE) models, including partially debonded interfaces. Finite element analysis, with models having different debonding geometries, was performed to numerically estimate the elastic behavior of the models. The models consisted of bonded and debonded regions of interfaces; the bonded region was treated as the perfectly bonded interface, while the Coulomb friction model was used to describe the debonded region with a small friction coefficient. The changes in the tensile and compressive moduli of the foams were investigated in terms of the degree of interfacial debonding and debonding geometry.

Tensile Properties and Fracture Behavior of Aluminum Alloy Foam Fabricated from Die Castings without Using Blowing Agent by Friction Stir Processing Route.

Project description:Al foam has been used in a wide range of applications owing to its light weight, high energy absorption and high sound insulation. One of the promising processes for fabricating Al foam involves the use of a foamable precursor. In this study, ADC12 Al foams with porosities of 67%-78% were fabricated from Al alloy die castings without using a blowing agent by the friction stir processing route. The pore structure and tensile properties of the ADC12 foams were investigated and compared with those of commercially available ALPORAS. From X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT) observations of the pore structure of ADC12 foams, it was found that they have smaller pores with a narrower distribution than those in ALPORAS. Tensile tests on the ADC12 foams indicated that as their porosity increased, the tensile strength and tensile strain decreased, with strong relation between the porosity, tensile strength, and tensile strain. ADC12 foams exhibited brittle fracture, whereas ALPORAS exhibited ductile fracture, which is due to the nature of the Al alloy used as the base material of the foams. By image-based finite element (FE) analysis using X-ray CT images corresponding to the tensile tests on ADC12 foams, it was shown that the fracture path of ADC12 foams observed in tensile tests and the regions of high stress obtained from FE analysis correspond to each other. Therefore, it is considered that the fracture behavior of ADC12 foams in relation to their pore structure distribution can be investigated by image-based FE analysis.

A biphasic approach for characterizing tensile, compressive and hydraulic properties of the sclera.

Project description:Measuring the biomechanical properties of the mouse sclera is of great interest: altered scleral properties are features of many common ocular pathologies, and the mouse is a powerful tool for studying genetic factors in disease, yet the small size of the mouse eye and its thin sclera make experimental measurements in the mouse difficult. Here, a poroelastic material model is used to analyse data from unconfined compression testing of both pig and mouse sclera, and the tensile modulus, compressive modulus and permeability of the sclera are obtained at three levels of compressive strain. Values for all three properties were comparable to previously reported values measured by tests specific for each property. The repeatability of the approach was evaluated using a test-retest experimental paradigm on pig sclera, and tensile stiffness and permeability measurements were found to be reasonably repeatable. The intrinsic material properties of the mouse sclera were measured for the first time. Tensile stiffness and permeability of the sclera in both species were seen to be dependent on the state of compressive strain. We conclude that unconfined compression testing of sclera, when analysed with poroelastic theory, is a powerful tool to phenotype mouse scleral changes in future genotype-phenotype association studies.

The strain hardening behavior during tensile deformation of a lath martensitic press hardening steel was described using a dislocation density-based constitutive model. The Kubin-Estrin model was used to describe strain hardening of the material from the evolution of coupled dislocation densities of mobile and immobile forest dislocation. The data presented provide insight into the complex deformation behavior of lath martensitic steel.

Behavior of Grouted Sleeve Splice for Steel Profile under Tensile Loadings.

Project description:Two groups of grouted sleeve splices for steel profile were tested to investigate their tensile behavior, serving as pilot studies for novel prefabricated reinforced concrete shear wall structures. In the first group, four splice specimens with different embedded lengths of steel profile were monotonic tensile loaded to determine an appropriate anchorage length. In the second group, three splice specimens with a conservative anchorage length of steel profile were tested under repeated tensile loading, cyclic loading at high stress, and cyclic loading at large strain, respectively. Parametric studies were then conducted on sleeve thickness, grout strength, offset of steel profile, and misalignment of steel profile using finite element method (FEM)-based models. The results show that the splices in the second group behaved well with minor residential deformation and almost no pinching effect. The optimized sleeve thickness could be appropriately determined using FEM models. The compressive strengths of the grout exceeding a threshold value and the offset of steel profile had minor influence on splice behavior, while the misalignment of steel profile had a pronounced effect.
