Project description:Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are solvent-free liquids comprised of densely packed cations and anions. The low vapor pressure and low flammability make ILs interesting for electrolytes in batteries. In this work, a new class of ionic liquids were formed for rechargeable aluminum/graphite battery electrolytes by mixing 1-methyl-1-propylpyrrolidinium chloride (Py13Cl) with various ratios of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) (AlCl3/Py13Cl molar ratio = 1.4 to 1.7). Fundamental properties of the ionic liquids, including density, viscosity, conductivity, anion concentrations and electrolyte ion percent were investigated and compared with the previously investigated 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (EMIC-AlCl3) ionic liquids. The results showed that the Py13Cl-AlCl3 ionic liquid exhibited lower density, higher viscosity and lower conductivity than its EMIC-AlCl3 counterpart. We devised a Raman scattering spectroscopy method probing ILs over a Si substrate, and by using the Si Raman scattering peak for normalization, we quantified speciation including AlCl4 -, Al2Cl7 -, and larger AlCl3 related species with the general formula (AlCl3) n in different IL electrolytes. We found that larger (AlCl3) n species existed only in the Py13Cl-AlCl3 system. We propose that the larger cationic size of Py13+ (142 Å3) versus EMI+ (118 Å3) dictated the differences in the chemical and physical properties of the two ionic liquids. Both ionic liquids were used as electrolytes for aluminum-graphite batteries, with the performances of batteries compared. The chloroaluminate anion-graphite charging capacity and cycling stability of the two batteries were similar. The Py13Cl-AlCl3 based battery showed a slightly larger overpotential than EMIC-AlCl3, leading to lower energy efficiency resulting from higher viscosity and lower conductivity. The results here provide fundamental insights into ionic liquid electrolyte design for optimal battery performance.

Project description:Mg batteries are a promising energy storage system because of the physicochemical merits of Mg as an anode material. However, the lack of electrochemically and chemically stable Mg electrolytes impedes the development of Mg batteries. In this study, a newly designed chloride-free Mg perfluorinated pinacolatoborate, Mg[B(O2 C2 (CF3 )4 )2 ]2 (abbreviated as Mg-FPB), was synthesized by a convenient method from commercially available reagents and fully characterized. The Mg-FPB electrolyte delivered outstanding electrochemical performance, specifically, 95?% Coulombic efficiency and 197?mV overpotential, enabling reversible Mg deposition, and an anodic stability of up to 4.0?V vs. Mg. The Mg-FPB electrolyte was applied to assemble a high voltage, rechargeable Mg/MnO2 battery with a discharge capacity of 150?mAh?g-1 .

Project description:The bimetallic compound Na[W2(μ-Cl)3Cl4(THF)2]·(THF)₃ (1, {W (3) W}(6+), a'2e'4) is a highly efficient room-temperature initiator for ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of norbornene (NBE) and some of its derivatives. In most cases, addition of phenylacetylene (PA) as co-initiator improves the catalytic activity and retains the high cis-stereoselectivity. On the other hand, 1 can polymerize cyclopentadiene (CPD), not via a metathetic, but rather, via a cationic mechanism. Here, we present a comparison of the reactivity of the two catalytic systems (1 and 1/PA) between themselves and with other systems reported in the literature, the characterization of the polymers formed and mechanistic aspects of the corresponding reactions.

Project description:Aqueous non-lithium based rechargeable batteries are emerging as promising energy storage devices thanks to their attractive rate capacities, long-cycle life, high safety, low cost, environmental-friendliness, and easy assembly conditions. However, the aqueous electrolytes with high ionic conductivity are always restricted by their intrinsically narrow electrochemical window. Encouragingly, the highly concentrated "water-in-salt" (WIS) electrolytes can efficiently expand the stable operation window, which brings up a series of aqueous high-voltage rechargeable batteries. In the mini review, we summarize the latest progress and contributions of various aqueous electrolytes for non-lithium (Na+, K+, Zn2+, Mg2+, and Al3+) based rechargeable batteries, and give a brief exploration of the operating mechanisms of WIS electrolytes in expanding electrochemically stable windows. Challenges and prospects are also proposed for WIS electrolytes toward aqueous non-lithium rechargeable metal ion batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable magnesium (Mg) batteries are an attractive candidate for next-generation battery technology because of their potential to offer high energy density, low cost, and safe use. Despite recent substantial progress achieved in the development of efficient electrolytes, identifying high-performance cathode materials remains a bottleneck for the realization of practical Mg batteries. Due to the strong interaction between the doubly charged Mg2+ ions and the host matrix, most of the conventional intercalation cathodes suffer from low capacity, high voltage hysteresis, and low energy density in Mg based battery systems. Alternatively, the thermodynamically favorable conversion reaction may circumvent the sluggish Mg2+ diffusion kinetics. In this review, the focus will be laid on promising cathodes beyond the typical intercalation-type materials. We will give an overview of the recent emerging Mg systems with conversion-type and organic cathodes.

Project description:Recent years have seen an intense and renewed interest in the Mg battery research, naming Mg-S the ?Holy Grail? battery, and expectations that Mg battery system will be able to compete and surpass Li-ion batteries in a matter of years. Considerable progress has been achieved in the field of Mg electrolytes, where several new electrolytes with improved electrochemical performance and favorable chemical properties (non-corrosive, non-nucleophilic) were synthesized. Development in the field of cathodes remains a bit more elusive, with inorganic, sulfur, and organic cathodes all showing their upsides and downsides. This review highlights the recent progress in the field of Mg battery cathodes, paying a special attention to the performance and comparison of the different types of the cathodes. It also aims to define advantages and key challenges in the development of each type of cathodes and finally specific questions that should be addressed in the future research.

Project description:Shedding new light on conventional batteries sometimes inspires a chemistry adoptable for rechargeable batteries. Recently, the primary lithium-sulfur dioxide battery, which offers a high energy density and long shelf-life, is successfully renewed as a promising rechargeable system exhibiting small polarization and good reversibility. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that reversible operation of the lithium-sulfur dioxide battery is also possible by exploiting conventional carbonate-based electrolytes. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal that the sulfur dioxide electrochemistry is highly stable in carbonate-based electrolytes, enabling the reversible formation of lithium dithionite. The use of the carbonate-based electrolyte leads to a remarkable enhancement of power and reversibility; furthermore, the optimized lithium-sulfur dioxide battery with catalysts achieves outstanding cycle stability for over 450 cycles with 0.2?V polarization. This study highlights the potential promise of lithium-sulfur dioxide chemistry along with the viability of conventional carbonate-based electrolytes in metal-gas rechargeable systems.

Project description:It is urgent to seek high performance solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) via a facile chemistry and simple process. The lithium salts are composed of complex anions that are stabilized by a Lewis acid agent. This Lewis acid can initiate the ring opening polymerization. Herein, a self-catalyzed strategy toward facile synthesis of crosslinked poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether-based solid polymer electrolyte (C-PEGDE) is presented. It is manifested that the poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether-based solid polymer electrolyte possesses a superior electrochemical stability window up to 4.5 V versus Li/Li+ and considerable ionic conductivity of 8.9 × 10-5 S cm-1 at ambient temperature. Moreover, the LiFePO4/C-PEGDE/Li batteries deliver stable charge/discharge profiles and considerable rate capability. It is demonstrated that this self-catalyzed strategy can be a very effective approach for high performance solid polymer electrolytes.

Project description:Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) have been highlighted as a potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant reserve, light weight, low cost, and good safety of Al. However, the development of AIBs faces challenges due to the usage of AlCl3-based ionic liquid electrolytes, which are expensive, corrosive, and sensitive to humidity. Here, we develop a low-cost, non-corrosive, and air-stable hydrated eutectic electrolyte composed of aluminum perchlorate nonahydrate and methylurea (MU) ligand. Through optimizing the molar ratio to achieve the unique solvation structure, the formed Al(ClO4)3·9H2O/MU hydrated deep eutectic electrolyte (AMHEE) with an average coordination number of 2.4 can facilely realize stable and reversible deposition/stripping of Al. When combining with vanadium oxide nanorods positive electrode, the Al-ion full battery delivers a high discharge capacity of 320 mAh g-1 with good capacity retention. The unique solvation structure with a low desolvation energy of the AMHEE enables Al3+ insertion/extraction during charge/discharge processes, which is evidenced by in situ synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction. This work opens a new pathway of developing low-cost, safe, environmentally friendly and high-performance electrolytes for practical and sustainable AIBs.

Project description:Chloride-based solid electrolytes are intriguing materials owing to their high Li+ ionic conductivity and electrochemical compatibility with high-voltage oxide cathodes for all-solid-state lithium batteries. However, the leading examples of these materials are limited to trivalent metals (e.g., Sc, Y, and In), which are expensive and scarce. Here, we expand this materials family by replacing the trivalent metals with a mix of di- and tetra-valent metals (e.g., Mg2+ and Zr4+). We synthesize Li2Mg1/3Zr1/3Cl4 in the spinel crystal structure and compare its properties with the high-performing Li2Sc2/3Cl4 that has been reported previously. We find that Li2Mg1/3Zr1/3Cl4 has lower ionic conductivity (0.028 mS/cm at 30 °C) than the isostructural Li2Sc2/3Cl4 (1.6 mS/cm at 30 °C). We attribute this difference to a disordered arrangement of Mg2+ and Zr4+ in Li2Mg1/3Zr1/3Cl4, which may block Li+ migration pathways. However, we show that aliovalent substitution across the Li2-z Mg1-3z/2Zr z Cl4 series between Li2MgCl4 and Li2ZrCl6 can boost ionic conductivity with increasing Zr4+ content, presumably due to the introduction of Li+ vacancies. This work opens a new dimension for halide-based solid electrolytes, accelerating the development of low-cost solid-state batteries.
