Four new orchid species from the Lengguru fold belt, West Papua, Indonesia.

ABSTRACT: Bulbophyllum leucoglossum, Dendrobium centrosepalum, Dendrobium taeniocaule, and Taeniophyllum pyriforme are here described as new species, based on herbarium specimens collected from the Lengguru fold-and-thrust belt in the West Papua Bird's neck, Indonesian New Guinea. All four novelties were found growing in submontane forest (elevation > 1000 m a.s.l.) on limestone karst. Information concerning the distribution and habitat for these taxa is provided along with diagnostic features, line drawings, high resolution photographs, and a map of collecting localities. More field studies are required to find additional populations of these new species, in order to better characterize their habitat, ecology and conservation status.

The phylogenetic position of a new species of Plakobranchus from West Papua, Indonesia (Mollusca, Opisthobranchia, Sacoglossa).

Project description:Plakobranchus papua Meyers-Muñoz & van der Velde, sp. n. from West Papua (Papua Barat province, Indonesia), is described based on its external morphology, colour pattern, internal anatomy, radula and reproductive system. In a molecular phylogenetic study specimens of this new species were compared with those of ten candidate taxa under the name Plakobranchus ocellatus van Hasselt, 1824. DNA analyses of COI mtDNA showed a clear distinction between Plakobranchus papua sp. n. and "Plakobranchus ocellatus". Plakobranchus papua, sp. n. also differed from all taxa that have been synonymised with Plakobranchus ocellatus. The genus is in dire need of taxonomic revision, preferably based on an integrative analysis involving morphology and DNA of all known Plakobranchus varieties.

Cherax warsamsonicus, a new species of crayfish from the Kepala Burung (Vogelkop) peninsula in West Papua, Indonesia (Crustacea, Decapoda, Parastacidae).

Project description:A new species, Cherax warsamsonicussp. n., endemic to the Warsamson River drainage, in the western part of the Kepala Burung (Vogelkop) peninsula, West Papua, Indonesia, is described, figured and compared with its closely related species, Cherax misolicus Holthuis, 1949. The new species may be easily distinguished from C. misolicus by the shape of the rostrum, absence of setae on the rostrum, the shape of the chelae, the presence of 3-4 cervical spines and by using sequence divergence, which is substantial for considering C. warsamsonicussp. n. to be a new species. The new species is collected and exported for ornamental purposes and its commercial name in the pet trade is Cherax "irian jaya", Cherax "pink coral", or Cherax "hoa creek". Due to similar colouration it is often confused with the recently described Cherax pulcher Lukhaup, 2015.

Project description:A new species, Cherax snowden sp. n., from the Oinsok River Drainage, Sawiat District in the central part of the Kepala Burung (Vogelkop) Peninsula, West Papua, Indonesia, is described, figured and compared with the closest related species, Cherax holthuisi Lukhaup & Pekny, 2006. This species is collected and exported for ornamental purposes and its commercial name in the pet trade is "orange tip" or "green orange tip". Both species may be easily distinguished morphologically or by using sequence divergence, which is substantial, for considering Cherax snowden sp. n. to be a new species.

Project description:Megagrapha starki Barták & Grootaert, sp. nov. (Poland, Russia, Slovakia), Oedalea portugalica Barták & Grootaert, sp. nov. (Portugal), Hybos conicus Grootaert & Barták, sp. nov. (Greece, Turkey), and Platypalpus obscuroides Barták & Grootaert, sp. nov. (Slovakia) are described and illustrated. Diagnostic characters are discussed. The female of Syndyas merzi Shamshev & Grootaert, 2012 is described for the first time. New distributional records are presented: Megagrapha europaea Papp & Földvári, 2001 is first reported from Slovakia and Syndyas merzi Shamshev & Grootaert, 2012 is first reported from Turkey.

A new, widely distributed species of the Exocelina ekari-group from West Papua (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae, Copelatinae).

Project description:Exocelina manokwariensis sp. n. from West Papua is placed into the Exocelina ekari-group based on the structure of its male genitalia. The new species is described, including its three subspecies, from the mainland of West Papua, Waigeo Island, Batanta and Salawati Islands, and Bomberai peninsula. An identification key to the subspecies as well as data on species distribution are provided.

Data on environmental contaminants in sea turtle eggs at Venu Island, Kaimana - West Papua, Indonesia.

Project description:Long-range atmospheric transport of contaminants can result in contamination of aquatic systems in otherwise pristine areas. Contaminants enter aquatic systems largely as inorganic pollutants that often are microbially transformed. The result can be a potent neurotoxin with a strong tendency to biomagnify within food chains. The general human population is exposed to contaminants such as mercury, predominantly through food consumption. Here, we report data on contaminants from a sample of green and hawksbill turtle that were sampled from a subset of two nests during the 2016 nesting season at Venu Island, Kaimana. Three contaminants (mercury, cadmium, arsenic) found in eggs exceeded safety limits for human consumption. Other contaminants such as lead, zinc, manganese, copper and iron were found below the established safety standard.

Project description:Four new species of armoured spiders from Sumatra, Indonesia are described. Three species are described in the genus Ablemma Roewer, 1963 and one species in the genus Brignoliella Shear, 1978; Ablemmaandriana sp. n. (male), Ablemmacontrita sp. n. (male and female), Ablemmakelinci sp. n. (male) and Brignoliellapatmae sp. n. (male and female). The female of Ablemmasingalang Lehtinen, 1981 is described here for the first time. The first record of Brignoliella for Sumatra is also presented.

A new Mycobacterium leprae dihydropteroate synthase variant (V39I) from Papua, Indonesia.

Project description:Indonesia had the third highest number of new leprosy cases worldwide in 2017. This disease is still prevalent in Papua province, where the number of new cases in 2014 (3.0 cases per 10,000 people) is considered highly endemic and is well above the World Health Organization's (WHO) cutoff of <1 new case per 10,000 people. Since 1995, the WHO has supplied Papua province with a multi-drug therapy (MDT) in which multibacillary (MB) patients are treated with rifampicin, clofazimine, and dapsone and paucibacillary (PB) patients are treated with rifampicin and dapsone. Recent published data on global drug resistance reported cases of dapsone resistance in relapsed and newly diagnosed cases in Indonesia during this period. The detection of specific point mutations in folP1 that encode dihydropteroate synthases (DHPS) is used exclusively to identify dapsone resistant strains of Mycobacterium leprae. The purpose of this study was to test for the presence of folP1 mutations in M. leprae strains isolated from patients residing in Papua Island, Indonesia who responded less effectively to dapsone. This study identified a folP1 point mutation that changed a valine (V) residue at amino acid position 39 (from the N-terminus) to isoleucine (I) (V39I) of DHPS. The V39I variant is located within an ?-helix motif that may not much affect its structure. Molecular docking analysis indicated that the binding affinity of the V39I variant was slightly reduced as compared to the wildtype of DHPS. The decreasing of affinity may have a consequence of increasing inhibition constants (Ki) of dapsone on the variant V39I of DHPS. The data suggest that the DHPS V39I variant might cause less sensitive to dapsone. However, in vivo studies (e.g., mouse footpad model) are needed to confirm the effect of this DHPS variant on dapsone therapy.
