Larval food plants of Australian Larentiinae (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) - a review of available data.

ABSTRACT:

Background

In Australia, the subfamily Larentiinae (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) comprises over 45 genera with about 270 species described so far. However, life histories of the Australian larentiine moths have barely been studied.

New information

The current paper presents a list of larval food plants of 51 Australian larentiine species based on literature references, data from specimen labels and own observations. Some Australian habitats are shown. Possible relationships among the taxa based on food preference of the larvae are discussed. Additionally, a list of Australasian larentiine species from the genera occurring in Australia and their food plants is presented.

Project description:Background:The subfamily Geometrinae (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), commonly known as emerald moths, is an ecologically diverse group of moths with over 2,500 described species. Many taxonomic and phylogenetic studies of Geometrinae have been undertaken in the past decade, resulting in hundreds of new taxonomic changes since online publication of the most recent checklist in December 2007. New information:This review synthesises the last 12 years of alpha-taxonomic research in Geometrinae. A comprehensive list of Geometrinae genus- and species-group descriptions, synonymies, combinations and other taxonomic changes, made since 2007, is provided. Since 2007, the known species richness of Geometrinae has increased from 2,529 to 2,642 species; an updated list of all these species is presented in a supplementary spreadsheet.

Geometrid caterpillar in Eocene Baltic amber (Lepidoptera, Geometridae).

Project description:Lepidoptera have little fossilization potential due to the presence of delicate structures and hence are exceptional findings, even in ambers that allow their preservation in sufficient detail for interpretation. From Eocene Baltic amber, the volumetrically largest known deposit of amber, there has been no reliable report of any member of the Macrolepidoptera (informal group of higher moths and all butterflies). Any such lepidopteran fossil would provide insight into evolutionary processes during the Eocene, long after flowering plants had completed their initial radiation. Here, we report on a first geometrid caterpillar from Baltic amber which is described as the oldest evidence for the subfamily Ennominae (tribe Boarmiini) and as one of the oldest records of the currently mega-diverse family. The new finding provides an important calibration point for molecular clock analyses within the family Geometridae and predates the basal divergence of Boarmiini from 32-38 to 44 Mya. It also predates the occurrence of this highly specialized form of caterpillar locomotion that allows for rapid movement.

Vitamin D Content of Australian Native Food Plants and Australian-Grown Edible Seaweed.

Project description:Vitamin D has previously been quantified in some plants and algae, particularly in leaves of the Solanaceae family. We measured the vitamin D content of Australian native food plants and Australian-grown edible seaweed. Using liquid chromatography with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry, 13 samples (including leaf, fruit, and seed) were analyzed in duplicate for vitamin D?, vitamin D?, 25-hydroxyvitamin D?, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D?. Five samples contained vitamin D?: raw wattleseed (Acacia victoriae) (0.03 µg/100 g dry weight (DW)); fresh and dried lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) leaves (0.03 and 0.24 µg/100 g DW, respectively); and dried leaves and berries of Tasmanian mountain pepper (Tasmannia lanceolata) (0.67 and 0.05 µg/100 g DW, respectively). Fresh kombu (Lessonia corrugata) contained vitamin D? (0.01 µg/100 g DW). Detected amounts were low; however, it is possible that exposure to ultraviolet radiation may increase the vitamin D content of plants and algae if vitamin D precursors are present.

A review of Timandra Duponchel, 1829 from China, with description of seven new species (Lepidoptera, Geometridae).

Project description:The Chinese species of the genus Timandra Duponchel, 1829 are reviewed: 12 known species are reported. Seven new species are described from China, increasing the total number of Timandra species to 28: T.distorta sp. n., T.adunca sp. n., T.quadrata sp. n., T.accumulata sp. n., T.viminea sp. n., T.robusta sp. n. and T.stueningi sp. n. Diagnoses for all 19 Chinese species are provided, with illustrations of external features and genitalia.

A review of Biston Leach, 1815 (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Ennominae) from China, with description of one new species.

Project description:The genus Biston Leach, 1815 is reviewed for China. Seventeen species are recognized, of which Biston mediolatasp. n. is described. Biston pustulata (Warren, 1896) and Biston panterinariaexanthemata (Moore, 1888) are newly recorded for China. The following new synonyms are established: Biston suppressaria suppressaria (Guenée, 1858) (= Biston suppressaria benescripta (Prout, 1915), syn. n. = Biston luculentus Inoue, 1992 syn. n.); Biston falcata (Warren, 1893) (= Amphidasiserilda Oberthür, 1910, syn. n. = Amphidasis clorinda Oberthür, 1910, syn. n. = Biston emarginaria Leech, 1897, syn. n.); Biston panterinaria panterinaria (Bremer & Grey, 1853) (= Biston panterinaria abraxata (Leech, 1889), syn. n. = Biston panterinaria lienpingensis (Wehrli, 1939), syn. n. = B. panterinaria szechuanensis (Wehrli, 1939), syn. n.). Biston falcata satura (Wehrli,1941), comb. n. is proposed. A key to Chinese Biston and diagnoses for Chinese species are provided. Illustrations of external features and genitalia are presented.

Complete mitochondrial genome of <i>Biston thoracicaria</i> (Lepidoptera: Geometridae).

Project description:The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Biston thoracicaria (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) is 15,538 bp in length, containing 13 PCGs, 22 tRNAs, two rRNAs, and an A + T-rich region. All PCGs initiate with typical start codon of ATN and share the complete stop codon of TAA, whereas cox1 starts with CGA. The ML analysis was performed using a dataset matrix containing 13 PCGs concatenated from the mitogenomes of Geometridae species. Our study presented the phylogenetic relationship of (Larentiinae + ((Sterrhinae + (Ennominae + Geometrinae))). Within the genera Biston, B. thoracicaria grouped with other species as the sister group.

The mitochondrial genome of <i>Erannis ankeraria</i> (Lepidoptera: Geometridae).

Project description:The measuring worm Erannis ankeraria belongs to the subfamily Ennominae of Geometridae. The mitogenome (GenBank accession number: MN046105) of E. ankeraria was sequenced, the new representative of the mitogenome of the subfamily. The nearly complete mitogenome is 15,250 bp totally, consisting of 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNAs, and 22 transfer RNAs. All genes have the similar locations and strands with that of other published species of Geometridae. The nucleotide composition biases towards A and T, which together made up 79.3% of the entirety. Bayesian inference analysis strongly supported the monophyly of Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, Noctuoidea, Papilionoidea, Pyraloidea, and Tortricoidea were strongly supported. This result also suggested that the Geometroidea was the sister to Bombycoidea, and then Noctuoidea was assigned to the sister group to the clade of Geometroidea + Bombycoidea, and then Pyraloidea was the sister group to the clade that contains Geometroidea, Bombycoidea, and Noctuoidea, and then Papilionoidea was the sister group to the clade that contains these four superfamilies mentioned above.

A new Stamnodes from the southwestern United States (Lepidoptera, Geometridae, Larentiinae).

Project description:Stamnodes fergusoni sp. nov. occurs from extreme southeastern Arizona through southern New Mexico east into western Texas, USA. Identity of the new species can be reliably determined by external features, genitalic characters, and COI haplotypes. Larvae are believed to be specialists on Salvia pinguifolia and S. ballotiflora. The adult and larval stages and male and female genitalia are illustrated, available DNA barcode data that support the recognition of the new Stamnodes are reviewed, and its life history briefly characterized.

Project description:A new genus and species of fossil moth, Miogeometrida chunjenshihi Zhang, Shih & Shih, gen. et sp. nov., assigned to Geometridae, is described from Miocene Dominican amber dating from 15-20 Mya. The new genus is characterized by the forewing without a fovea, R1 not anastomosing with Sc, no areole formed by veins R1 and Rs, R1 and Rs1 completely coincident, M2 arising midway between M1 and M3, anal veins 1A and 2A fused for their entire lengths; and the hind wing with Rs running close to Sc + R1 and M2 absent.
