Ultrafast diffusion of Ionic Liquids Confined in Carbon Nanotubes.

ABSTRACT: Over the past decade many works have focused on various aspects of the dynamics of liquids confined at the nanoscale such as e.g. water flow enhancement through carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Transport of room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) through various nanochannels has also been explored and some conflicting findings about their translational dynamics have been reported. In this work, we focus on translational dynamics of RTILs confined in various CNTs. By means of molecular dynamics simulations we highlight a substantially enhanced diffusion of confined RTILs with an increase up to two orders of magnitude with respect to bulk-phase properties. This ultrafast diffusion of RTILs inside CNTs is shown to result from the combination of various factors such as low friction, molecular stacking, size, helicity, curvature and cooperative dynamics effects.

"Giant" Nitrogen Uptake in Ionic Liquids Confined in Carbon Pores.

Project description:Ionic liquids are well known for their high gas absorption capacity. It is shown that this is not a solvent constant, but can be enhanced by another factor of 10 by pore confinement, here of the ionic liquid (IL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimOAc) in the pores of carbon materials. A matrix of four different carbon compounds with micro- and mesopores as well as with and without nitrogen doping is utilized to investigate the influence of the carbons structure on the nitrogen uptake in the pore-confined EmimOAc. In general, the absorption is most improved for IL in micropores and in nitrogen-doped carbon. This effect is so large that it is already seen in TGA and DSC experiments. Due to the low vapor pressure of the IL, standard volumetric sorption experiments can be used to quantify details of this effect. It is reasoned that it is the change of the molecular arrangement of the ions in the restricted space of the pores that creates additional free volume to host molecular nitrogen.

Partial breaking of the Coulombic ordering of ionic liquids confined in carbon nanopores.

Project description:Ionic liquids are composed of equal quantities of positive and negative ions. In the bulk, electrical neutrality occurs in these liquids due to Coulombic ordering, in which ion shells of alternating charge form around a central ion. Their structure under confinement is far less well understood. This hinders the widespread application of ionic liquids in technological applications. Here we use scattering experiments to resolve the structure of a widely used ionic liquid (EMI-TFSI) when it is confined inside nanoporous carbons. We show that Coulombic ordering reduces when the pores can accommodate only a single layer of ions. Instead, equally charged ion pairs are formed due to the induction of an electric potential of opposite sign in the carbon pore walls. This non-Coulombic ordering is further enhanced in the presence of an applied external electric potential. This finding opens the door for the design of better materials for electrochemical applications.

Properties of water confined in ionic liquids.

Project description:The varying states of water confined in the nano-domain structures of typical room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) were investigated by (1)H NMR and by measurements of self-diffusion coefficients while systematically varying the IL cations and anions. The NMR peaks for water in BF4-based ILs were clearly split, indicating the presence of two discrete states of confined water (H2O and HOD). Proton and/or deuterium exchange rate among the water molecules was very slowly in the water-pocket. Notably, no significant changes were observed in the chemical shifts of the ILs. Self-diffusion coefficient results showed that water molecules exhibit a similar degree of mobility, although their diffusion rate is one order of magnitude faster than that of the IL cations and anions. These findings provide information on a completely new type of confinement, that of liquid water in soft matter.

Crystal-confined freestanding ionic liquids for reconfigurable and repairable electronics.

Project description:Liquid sensors composed of ionic liquids are rising as alternatives to solid semiconductors for flexible and self-healing electronics. However, the fluidic nature may give rise to leakage problems in cases of accidental damages. Here, we proposed a liquid sensor based on a binary ionic liquid system, in which a flowing ionic liquid [OMIm]PF6 is confined by another azobenzene-containing ionic liquid crystalline [OMIm]AzoO. Those crystal components provide sufficient pinning capillary force to immobilize fluidic components, leading to a freestanding liquid-like product without the possibility of leakage. In addition to owning ultra-high temperature sensitivity, crystal-confined ionic liquids also combine the performances of both liquid and solid so that it can be stretched, bent, self-healed, and remolded. With respect to the reconfigurable property, this particular class of ionic liquids is exploited as dynamic circuits which can be spatially reorganized or automatically repaired.

Swelling and Diffusion in Polymerized Ionic Liquids-Based Hydrogels.

Project description:Hydrogels are one of the emerging classes of materials in current research. Besides their numerous applications in the medical sector as a drug delivery system or in tissue replacement, they are also suitable as irrigation components or as immobilization matrices in catalysis. For optimal application of these compounds, knowledge of the swelling properties and the diffusion mechanisms occurring in the gels is mandatory. This study is focused on hydrogels synthesized by radical polymerization of imidazolium-based ionic liquids. Both the swelling and diffusion behavior of these hydrogels were investigated via gravimetric swelling as well as sorption experiments implemented in water, ethanol, n-heptane, and tetrahydrofuran. In water and ethanol, strong swelling was observed while the transport mechanism deviated from Fickian-type behavior. By varying the counterion and the chain length of the cation, their influences on the processes were observed. The calculation of the diffusion coefficients delivered values in the range of 10-10 to 10-12 m2 s-1. The gravimetric results were supported by apparent diffusion coefficients measured through diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging. A visualization of the water diffusion front within the hydrogel should help to further elucidate the diffusion processes in the imidazolium-based hydrogels.

Relative Cation-Anion Diffusion in Alkyltriethylammonium-Based Ionic Liquids.

Project description:19F Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spin-lattice relaxation experiments have been performed for a series of ionic liquids including the same anion, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, and cations with alkyl chains of different lengths: triethylhexylammonium, triethyloctylammonium, decyltriethylammonium, dodecyltriethylammonium, decyltriethylammonium, and hexadecyltriethylammonium. The experiments have been carried out in a frequency range of 10 kHz to 10 MHz versus temperature. A thorough analysis of the relaxation data has led to the determination of the cation-anion as a relative translation diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficients have been compared with the corresponding cation-cation and anion-anion diffusion coefficients, revealing a correlation in the relative translation movement of the anion and the triethylhexylammonium, triethyloctylammonium, decyltriethylammonium, and dodecyltriethylammonium cations, whereas the relative translation diffusion between the anion and the cations with the longer alkyl chains, decyltriethylammonium and hexadecyltriethylammonium, remains rather uncorrelated (correlated to a much lesser extent).

Ultrafast dynamics and scattering of protic ionic liquids induced by XFEL pulses.

Project description:X-rays are routinely used for structural studies through scattering, and femtosecond X-ray lasers can probe ultrafast dynamics. We aim to capture the femtosecond dynamics of liquid samples using simulations and deconstruct the interplay of ionization and atomic motion within the X-ray laser pulse. This deconstruction is resolution dependent, as ionization influences the low momentum transfers through changes in scattering form factors, while atomic motion has a greater effect at high momentum transfers through loss of coherence. Our methodology uses a combination of classical molecular dynamics and plasma simulation on a protic ionic liquid to quantify the contributions to the scattering signal and how these evolve with time during the X-ray laser pulse. Our method is relevant for studies of organic liquids, biomolecules in solution or any low-Z materials at liquid densities that quickly turn into a plasma while probed with X-rays.

Factors governing helix formation in peptides confined to carbon nanotubes.

Project description:The effect of confinement on the stability and dynamics of peptides and proteins is relevant in the context of a number of problems in biology and biotechnology. We have examined the stability of different helix-forming sequences upon confinement to a carbon nanotube using Langevin dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained representation of the polypeptide chain. We show that the interplay of several factors that include sequence, solvent conditions, strength (lambda) of nanotube-peptide interactions, and the nanotube diameter (D) determines confinement-induced stability of helicies. In agreement with predictions based on polymer theory, the helical state is entropically stabilized for all sequences when the interaction between the peptide and the nanotube is weakly hydrophobic and D is small. However, there is a strong sequence dependence as the strength of the lambda increases. For an amphiphilic sequence, the helical stability increases with lambda, whereas for polyalanine the diagram of states is a complex function of lambda and D. In addition, decreasing the size of the "hydrophobic patch" lining the nanotube, which mimics the chemical heterogeneity of the ribosome tunnel, increases the helical stability of the polyalanine sequence. Our results provide a framework for interpreting a number of experiments involving the structure formation of peptides in the ribosome tunnel as well as transport of biopolymers through nanotubes.

Energetics and electronic structures of perylene confined in carbon nanotubes.

Project description:The energetics and geometries of perylene encapsulated in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been investigated employing density functional theory using the generalized gradient approximation combined with the van der Waals correction. Our calculations show that the encapsulated perylene molecules possess two metastable molecular conformations with respect to the CNT wall, which are almost degenerate with each other. A standing conformation, with respect to the CNT wall, is the ground state conformation for a semiconducting (19,0)CNT, while a lying conformation is the ground state for a metallic (11,11)CNT. Cooperation and competition between perylene-perylene and perylene-CNT interactions cause these possible perylene conformations inside CNTs. However, the electronic structure of the CNT encapsulating the perylene molecules is found to be insensitive to the molecular conformation.

Ionic Liquids Catalysis for Carbon Dioxide Conversion With Nucleophiles.

Project description:Carbon dioxide, as a promising C1 synthon, has attracted great interest in organic synthesis. Due to the thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness of CO2, developing efficient strategies for CO2 activation and subsequent conversion is very crucial. In this context, Ionic liquids (ILs) show great potential for capturing and activating CO2 owing to their unique structures and properties, making them become ideal alternatives to volatile organic solvents and/or catalysts for CO2 transformation. This minireview aims at summarizing ILs-promoted reactions of CO2 with N-nucleophiles (primary amines)/O-nucleophiles (primary alcohols, water). Two catalytic systems i.e., metal/ILs binary systems such as Cu/ILs systems and Ag/ILs systems as well as single ILs systems including anion-functionalized ILs and bifunctionalized ILs have been developed for CO2 catalytic conversion, for instance, carboxylative cyclization of nucleophiles e.g., propargylic alcohols, amines, 2-aminobenzonitriles and o-aminobenzenethiol, and formylation of amines or 2-aminothiophenols with hydrosilanes to afford various value-added chemicals e.g., cyclic carbamates, unsymmetrical organic carbonates, ?-hydroxyl ketones, and benzimidazolones. In a word, IL could provide a powerful tool for efficient CO2 utilization.
