Facile fabrication of high-quality Ag/PS coaxial nanocables based on the mixed mode of soft/hard templates.

ABSTRACT: A new kind of high-quality Ag/PS coaxial nanocables can be facilely synthesized by using soft/hard templates method. In order to effectively introduce Ag sources into porous polystyrene (PS) nanotubes which were trapped in porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) hard template, Pluronic F127 (F127) was used as guiding agent, soft template and reductant. Meanwhile, ethylene glycol solution was also used as solvent and co-reducing agent to assist in the formation of silver nanowires. The influences of concentration of F127 and reducing reaction time on the formation of Ag/PS coaxial nanocables were discussed. Results indicated that the high-quality Ag/PS coaxial nanocables can be obtained by the mixed mode of soft/hard templates under optimized conditions. This strategy is expected to be extended to design more metal/polymer coaxial nanocables for the benefit of creation of complex and functional nanoarchitectures and components.

Bottom-up Fabrication of Graphene on Silicon/Silica Substrate via a Facile Soft-hard Template Approach.

Project description:In this work, a novel soft-hard template method towards the direct fabrication of graphene films on silicon/silica substrate is developed via a tri-constituent self-assembly route. Using cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as a soft template, silica (SiO2) from tetramethoxysilane as a hard template, and pyrene as a carbon source, the self-assembly process allows the formation of a sandwich-like SiO2/CTAB/pyrene composite, which can be further converted to high quantity graphene films with a thickness of ~1 nm and a size of over 5 μm by thermal treatment. The morphology and thickness of the graphene films can be effectively controlled through the adjustment of the ratio of pyrene to CTAB. Furthermore, a high nonlinear refractive index n2 of ~10(-12) m(2) W(-1) is measured from graphene/silica hybrid film, which is six orders of magnitude larger than that of silicon and comparable to the graphene from chemical vapor deposition process.

Synthesis and electrical property of metal/ZnO coaxial nanocables.

Project description:Ag/ZnO and Cu/ZnO coaxial nanocables were fabricated using AgNO3 or copper foil as source materials by the vapor-liquid-solid process. The coaxial nanocables consist of a crystalline metallic Ag or Cu core and a semiconductor ZnO shell. The evolution of the Ag/ZnO products having different morphologies was investigated by stopping the heating at different temperatures. The diameters of the Ag/ZnO nanocables and the Ag cores could be modulated by changing Ag ratio in the source. The electrical characteristics of the Ag/ZnO contact and the influence of annealing reveal a Schottky diode behavior for a single Ag/ZnO nanocable device. The nanocables with uniform shape and controlled size are expected to provide a new choice in various applications of biological detection, nanothermometer, and photocatalysis.

Facile Synthesis of Mono-Dispersed Polystyrene (PS)/Ag Composite Microspheres via Modified Chemical Reduction.

Project description:A modified method based on in situ chemical reduction was developed to prepare mono-dispersed polystyrene/silver (PS/Ag) composite microspheres. In this approach; mono-dispersed PS microspheres were synthesized through dispersion polymerization using poly-vinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a dispersant at first. Then, poly-dopamine (PDA) was fabricated to functionally modify the surfaces of PS microspheres. With the addition of [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ to the PS dispersion, [Ag(NH₃)₂]⁺ complex ions were absorbed and reduced to silver nanoparticles on the surfaces of PS-PDA microspheres to form PS/Ag composite microspheres. PVP acted both as a solvent of the metallic precursor and as a reducing agent. PDA also acted both as a chemical protocol to immobilize the silver nanoparticles at the PS surface and as a reducing agent. Therefore, no additional reducing agents were needed. The resulting composite microspheres were characterized by TEM, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), XRD, UV-Vis and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). The results showed that Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were homogeneously immobilized onto the PS microspheres' surface in the presence of PDA and PVP. PS/Ag composite microspheres were well formed with a uniform and compact shell layer and were adjustable in terms of their optical property.

Silver-Polystyrene (Ag/PS) Nanocomposites Doped with Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)-Fabrication and Bactericidal Activity.

Project description:In the present work, we report the studies on perfectly homogeneous nanocomposites composed of polystyrene-grafted silver nanoparticles (Ag@PS) as a bioactive fulfilment and a mixture of polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a matrix. The procedure developed by our group of the nanocomposites' preparation consists of three steps: synthesis of narrow-dispersive AgNPs (5.96 ± 1.02 nm); grafting of narrowly dispersed polystyrene onto the surface of AgNPs; thermoforming with a mixture of PS/PVA. Kirby-Bauer (K-B) and Dynamic Shake Flask (DSF) assays revealed high antibacterial activity against a series of Gram(-) and Gram(+) bacteria strains of the fabricated nanocomposites at low silver content (0.5%). We showed that the doping of Ag/PS composites with PVA increases the antibacterial activity of composites. The hydrophilic component in the nanocomposites enables easier water migration inside the polymer matrix, which makes releasing silver nanoparticles and silver ions to the environment facile.

Facile fabrication of hierarchical film composed of Co(OH)<sub>2</sub>@Carbon nanotube core/sheath nanocables and its capacitive performance.

Project description:A hierarchical film composed of Co(OH)2@carbon nanotube (CNT) core/sheath nanocables (CCNF) was generated via a simple and rapid electrophoretic deposition method. It is found that the Co(OH)2 sheath was uniformly anchored on the surface of conductive CNT core. The Co(OH)2 sheath, with a thickness of ∼20 nm, was composed of numerous very tiny nanoparticles. Such a unique nanostructure endows the CCNF with a high surface area of 126 m2 g-1 and a hierarchical porosity, resulting in a large accessible surface area for redox activity. As expected, the CCNF exhibits high specific capacitance and excellent rate performance. Its specific capacitance reached 1215 F g-1 under a low current density of 1 A g-1 and was maintained at 832 F g-1 when the current density was increased 20 times to 20 A g-1. A high capacitance retention of 99.3% was achieved after 10 000 cycles at 1 A g-1. Such intriguing capacitive behavior is attributed to the synergistic effect of the CNT core and the Co(OH)2 sheath.

A Facile Strategy for Fabrication Lysozyme-Loaded Mesoporous Silica Nanotubes from Electrospun Silk Fibroin Nanofiber Templates.

Project description:This paper presents a facile and low-cost strategy for fabrication lysozyme-loaded mesoporous silica nanotubes (MSNTs) by using silk fibroin (SF) nanofiber templates. The "top-down method" was adopted to dissolve degummed silk in CaCl2/ formic acid (FA) solvent, and the solution containing SF nanofibrils was used for electrospinning to prepare SF nanofiber templates. As SF contains a large number of -OH, -NH2 and -COOH groups, the silica layer could be easily formed on its surface by the Söber sol-gel method without adding any surfactant or coupling agent. After calcination, the MSNTs were obtained with inner diameters about 200 nm, the wall thickness ranges from 37 ± 2 nm to 66 ± 3 nm and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area was up to 200.48 m2/g, the pore volume was 1.109 cm3/g. By loading lysozyme, the MSNTs exhibited relatively high drug encapsulation efficiency up to 31.82% and an excellent long-term sustained release in 360 h (15 days). These results suggest that the MSNTs with the hierarchical structure of mesoporous and macroporous will be a promising carrier for applications in biomacromolecular drug delivery systems.

Fabrication and functionalization of 3D-printed soft and hard scaffolds with growth factors for enhanced bioactivity.

Project description:Strategies to improve the acceptance of scaffolds by the body is crucial in tissue engineering (TE) which requires tailoring of the pore structure, mechanical properties and surface characteristics of the scaffolds. In the current study we used a 3-dimensional (3D) printing technique to tailor the pore structure and mechanical properties of (i) nanocellulose based hydrogel scaffolds for soft tissue engineering and (ii) poly lactic acid (PLA) based scaffolds for hard tissue engineering in combination with surface treatment by protein conjugation for tuning the scaffold bioactivity. Dopamine coating of the scaffolds enhanced the hydrophilicity and their capability to bind bioactive molecules such as fibroblast growth factor (FGF-18) for soft TE scaffolds and arginyl glycyl aspartic acid (RGD) peptide for hard TE scaffolds, which was confirmed using MALDI-TOFs. This functionalization approach enhanced the performance of the scaffolds and provided antimicrobial activity indicating that these scaffolds can be used for cartilage or bone regeneration applications. Blood compatibility studies revealed that both the materials were compatible with human red blood cells. Significant enhancement of cell attachment and proliferation confirmed the bioactivity of growth factor functionalized 3D printed soft and hard tissues. This approach of combining 3D printing with biological tuning of the interface is expected to significantly advance the development of biomedical materials related to soft and hard tissue engineering.

Facile Fabrication of Nanofibrillated Chitin/Ag<sub>2</sub>O Heterostructured Aerogels with High Iodine Capture Efficiency.

Project description:Nanofibrillated chitin/Ag2O aerogels were fabricated for radioiodine removal. Chitin was first fabricated into nanofibers with abundant acetyl amino groups (-NHCOCH3) on the surface. Then, highly porous chitin nanofiber (ChNF) aerogels were obtained via freeze-drying. The ChNF aerogels exhibited a low bulk density of 2.19 mg/cm3 and a high specific surface area of 179.71 m2/g. Ag2O nanoparticles were evenly anchored on the surfaces of ChNF scaffolds via strong interactions with -NHCOCH3 groups, subsequently yielding Ag2O@ChNF heterostructured aerogels. The composites were used as efficient absorbents to remove radioiodine anions from water and capture a high amount of I2 vapor in the forms of AgI and iodine molecules. The adsorption capacity of the composite monoliths can reach up to 2.81 mmol/g of I- anions. The high adsorbability of the composite monolithic aerogel signifies its potential applications in radioactive waste disposal.
