Project description:Background:Belly dancer syndrome (BDS) and parkinsonian features are rarely described in association as a drug-induced movement disorder. Phenomenology shown:A 62-year-old woman with paranoid schizophrenia presented with bradykinesia, rigidity, rest, and postural tremor, as well as dyskinetic abdominal movements. Educational value:Our case highlights that drug-induced parkinsonism can be associated with other rare movement disorders, such as BDS, with subsequent greater morbidity.

Project description:Pathology associated with the plantaris includes rupture of the tendon and an association with mid-substance Achilles tendinopathy in some patients. There have only been two previous case reports in the literature in English language describing snapping of the plantaris tendon. We present a case report of a 15-year-old female competitive dancer who described pain and an audible popping at the medial margin of the Achilles tendon while squatting. Physical examination revealed visible and audible popping of the plantaris, and ultrasonography confirmed the diagnosis. After symptoms persisted despite nonsurgical treatment with physical therapy, the patient underwent an open plantaris tenotomy. By 8 weeks after surgery, she had resumed dancing. Twenty-three months after her operation, she reported an excellent outcome and full recovery with no limitations to her physical activity. She reported having no pain, a Foot and Ankle Ability Measure Activities of Daily Living Subscale score of 100, and a Foot and Ankle Ability Measure Sports Subscale score of 100. This case demonstrates a successful course of treatment for this uncommon pathology within the context of a competitive dancer.

Project description:A digital anatomy construction (DANCER) program was developed for gene expression data. DANCER can be used to reconstruct anatomical images from in situ hybridization images, microarray or other gene expression data. The program fills regions of a drawn figure with the corresponding values from a gene expression data set. The output of the program presents the expression levels of a particular gene in a particular region relative to other regions. The program was tested with values from experimental in situ hybridization autoradiographs and from a microarray experiment. Reconstruction of in situ hybridization data from adult rat brain made by DANCER corresponded well with the original autoradiograph. Reconstruction of microarray data from adult mouse brains provided images that reflect actual expression levels. This program should help to provide visualization and interpretation of data derived from gene expression experiments. DANCER may be freely downloaded.

Project description:We show that respiratory cycle provides a periodic traction force for the production of belly button lint or navel fluff. The relative motion induced between clothing and skin, during breathing, transports the clothing fibers over the abdominal skin via an asymmetric sliding mechanism effected by the specific orientation of the cuticle scales of body hair. The source of these fibers can be the piece of clothing worn adjacent the navel area or the drying towel used after shower. The ratchet like topology of hair surface ensures a net unidirectional transport of these fibers. Since the predominant direction of growth of hair in the abdomen is toward the navel, this unidirectional transport leads to a perpetual accumulation of fibers in the navel over the course of the day. By analyzing the force balance on a moving fiber and the transport dynamics of its number density distribution, we develop a mathematical model to describe the accretion rate of lint fibers in the navel.

Project description:The first report of an abdominal wall dyskinesia syndrome was published in 1990 by Iliceto et al. (1990), who were the first to use the "belly dancer dyskinesia" (BDD) nomenclature. BDD is a rare syndrome involving repetitive, involuntary, and continuous movements of the abdominal wall muscles (Iliceto et al., 1990). We describe the case of a 79-year-old, right-handed woman who showed symptoms of BDD syndrome after using levodopa due to parkinson's disease (PD). In this report, BDD was treated by stopping levodopa. After 15 days without levodopa, a positive outcome was achieved. The patient no longer exhibited BDD at the six-month and one-year follow-ups.

Project description:Previous research indicates that psychological factors such as motivation and mental skills play an important role in relation to performance and to negotiating talent development stages. However, little is known about these factors in dance, particularly with regard to the independent dancer whose career may involve multiple roles, varied work patterns, and periods of instability. The aim of this study was to explore dancers' motivation to work in an independent capacity, and the extent to which dancers' psychological characteristics and skills enabled them to navigate a career in this demanding sector. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 dancers at different stages of their careers. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and content analyzed. Analysis revealed that the dancers were intrinsically motivated and highly committed to the profession. Working in the independent sector offered dancers opportunities for growth and fulfillment; they appreciated the autonomy, flexibility and freedom that the independent career afforded, as well as working with new people across roles and disciplines. In order to overcome the various challenges associated with the independent role, optimism, self-belief, social support, and career management skills were crucial. The mental skills reported by the participants had developed gradually in response to the demands that they faced. Therefore, mental skills training could be invaluable for dancers to help them successfully negotiate the independent sector.

Project description:Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by joint inflammation, affecting approximately 1% of the general population. To alleviate symptoms and ameliorate joint damage, chronic use of immunosuppressives is needed. However, these treatments are only partially effective and may lead to unwanted side effects. Therefore, a more profound understanding of the pathophysiology might lead to more effective therapies, or better still, a cure. The presence of autoantibodies in RA indicates that B cells might have a pivotal role in the disease. This concept is further supported by the fact that a diverse antibody response to various arthritis-related epitopes is associated with arthritis development. In this context, attention has focused in recent years on the role of Germinal Centers (GCs) in RA. Since GCs act as the main anatomic location of somatic hypermutations, and, thus, contributing to the diversity and specificity of (auto) antibodies, it has been speculated that defects in germinal center reactions might be crucial in the initiation and maintenance of auto-immune events. In this paper, we discuss current evidence that various processes within GCs can result in the aberrant production of B cells that possess autoreactive properties and might result in the production of RA related autoantibodies. Secondly, we discuss various (pre-)clinical studies that have targeted various GC processes as novel therapies for RA treatment.

Project description:Prune belly syndrome (PBS), also known as Eagle-Barrett syndrome, is a rare congenital disorder characterized by absence or hypoplasia of the abdominal wall musculature, urinary tract anomalies, and cryptorchidism in males. The etiology of PBS is largely unresolved, but genetic factors are implicated given its recurrence in families. We examined cases of PBS to identify novel pathogenic copy number variants (CNVs). A total of 34 cases (30 males and 4 females) with PBS identified from all live births in New York State (1998-2005) were genotyped using Illumina HumanOmni2.5 microarrays. CNVs were prioritized if they were absent from in-house controls, encompassed ?10 consecutive probes, were ?20 Kb in size, had ?20% overlap with common variants in population reference controls, and had ?20% overlap with any variant previously detected in other birth defect phenotypes screened in our laboratory. We identified 17 candidate autosomal CNVs; 10 cases each had one CNV and four cases each had two CNVs. The CNVs included a 158 Kb duplication at 4q22 that overlaps the BMPR1B gene; duplications of different sizes carried by two cases in the intron of STIM1 gene; a 67 Kb duplication 202 Kb downstream of the NOG gene, and a 1.34 Mb deletion including the MYOCD gene. The identified rare CNVs spanned genes involved in mesodermal, muscle, and urinary tract development and differentiation, which might help in elucidating the genetic contribution to PBS. We did not have parental DNA and cannot identify whether these CNVs were de novo or inherited. Further research on these CNVs, particularly BMP signaling is warranted to elucidate the pathogenesis of PBS.

Project description:The perceived distance between two touches has been found to be larger for pairs of stimuli oriented across the width of the body than along the length of the body, for several body parts. Nevertheless, the magnitude of such biases varies from place to place, suggesting systematically different distortions of tactile space across the body. Several recent studies have investigated perceived tactile distance on the belly as an implicit measure of body perception in clinical conditions including anorexia nervosa and obesity. In this study, we investigated whether there is an anisotropy of perceived tactile distance on the belly in a sample of adult women. Participants made verbal estimates of the perceived distance between pairs of touches oriented either across body width or along body length on the belly and the dorsum of the left hand. Consistent with previous results, a large anisotropy was apparent on the hand, with across stimuli perceived as larger than along stimuli. In contrast, no such bias was apparent on the belly. These results provide further evidence that anisotropies of perceived tactile distance vary systematically across the body and suggest that there is no anisotropy at all on the belly in healthy women.
