Template-mediated Synthesis of Hollow Microporous Organic Nanorods with Tunable Aspect Ratio.

ABSTRACT: Hollow microporous organic nanorods (HMORs) with hypercrosslinked polymer (HCPs) shells were synthesized through emulsion polymerization followed by hypercrosslinking. The HMORs have tunable aspect ratios, high BET surface areas and monodispersed morphologies, showing good performance in gas adsorpion.

Synthesis of Citrate-Coated Penta-twinned Palladium Nanorods and Ultrathin Nanowires with a Tunable Aspect Ratio.

Project description:Green and scalable methodologies for the preparation of metal nanoparticles with fine control of shape and size are of high interest in many areas including catalysis, nanomedicine, and nanodiagnostics. In this contribution, we describe a new synthetic method for the production of palladium (Pd) penta-twinned nanowires and nanorods utilizing sodium citrate, formic acid, ascorbic acid, and potassium bromide (KBr) in water, without the use of surfactants or polymers. The synthesis is green, fast, and without the need of complex setups. Interestingly, a microwave-assisted scale-up process has been developed. The combination of a synthetic protocol for seeds and the seed-mediated growth process allows us to synthesize nanorods and nanowires by modulating the concentration of KBr. The synthesized nanomaterials have been physicochemically characterized. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy shows that the nanorods and nanowires have a penta-twinned structure enclosed by {100} lateral facets. Moreover, the absence of sticky molecules or toxic byproducts guarantees the biocompatibility of the nanomaterials, while leaving the surface clean to perform enzymatic activities.

Hollow microporous organic capsules.

Project description:Fabrication of hollow microporous organic capsules (HMOCs) could be very useful because of their hollow and porous morphology, which combines the advantages of both microporous organic polymers and non-porous nanocapsules. They can be used as storage materials or reaction chambers while supplying the necessary path for the design of controlled uptake/release systems. Herein, the synthesis of HMOCs with high surface area through facile emulsion polymerization and hypercrosslinking reactions, is described. Due to their tailored porous structure, these capsules possessed high drug loading efficiency, zero-order drug release kinetics and are also demonstrated to be used as nanoscale reactors for the prepareation of nanoparticles (NPs) without any external stabilizer. Moreover, owing to their intrinsic biocompatibility and fluorescence, these capsules exhibit promising prospect for biomedical applications.

Glucose-mediated template-free synthesis of hollow CuO microspheres.

Project description:In this work, we demonstrated a facile template-free method for the preparation of hollow CuO microspheres via a conventional hydrothermal reaction. The hollow architecture formed directly during the hydrothermal treatment of copper nitrate and glucose, without the use of template, precipitant and calcination process. The effects of reaction time, reaction temperature and glucose concentration were investigated in detail. On the basis of experimental results, the formation of hollow CuO microspheres probably proceeded via self-assemble process and the subsequent Ostwald's ripening. This synthetic strategy strongly depended on the characteristics of copper nitrate, which made it could not extend to other copper salts and/or nitrates. Even though, glucose still showed efficient morphology controlling ability with respect to nanosized transitional metal oxides, which could be used for the controllable synthesis of nanomaterials.

Designed synthesis of CeO2 nanorods and nanowires for studying toxicological effects of high aspect ratio nanomaterials.

Project description:While it has been shown that high aspect ratio nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes and TiO(2) nanowires can induce toxicity by acting as fiber-like substances that damage the lysosome, it is not clear what the critical lengths and aspect ratios are that induce this type of toxicity. To answer this question, we synthesized a series of cerium oxide (CeO(2)) nanorods and nanowires with precisely controlled lengths and aspect ratios. Both phosphate and chloride ions were shown to play critical roles in obtaining these high aspect ratio nanostructures. High-resolution TEM analysis shows that single-crystalline CeO(2) nanorods/nanowires were formed along the [211] direction by an "oriented attachment" mechanism, followed by Ostwald ripening. The successful creation of a comprehensive CeO(2) nanorod/nanowire combinatorial library allows, for the first time, the systematic study of the effect of aspect ratio on lysosomal damage, cytotoxicity, and IL-1? production by the human myeloid cell line (THP-1). This in vitro toxicity study demonstrated that, at lengths ?200 nm and aspect ratios ?22, CeO(2) nanorods induced progressive pro-inflammatory effects and cytotoxicity. The relatively low "critical" length and aspect ratio were associated with small nanorod/nanowire diameters (6-10 nm), which facilitates the formation of stacking bundles due to strong van der Waals and dipole-dipole attractions. Our results suggest that both length and diameter components of aspect ratio should be considered when addressing the cytotoxic effects of high aspect ratio materials.

Microfluidics-mediated self-template synthesis of anisotropic hollow ellipsoidal mesoporous silica nanomaterials.

Project description:Herein, a facile strategy was firstly developed to synthesize ellipsoidal mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSNs) with well-ordered parallel channels along the short axis. A miniaturized microfluidic device with spiral-shaped channels was then chosen as a straightforward and general platform to produce the corresponding hollow counterparts of MSNs under mild conditions. Such reaction process carried out in a microfluidic system was further demonstrated to be more rapid and efficient than conventional batch method under equivalent experimental conditions. The evolution of hollow structure can be well-tuned by flow rates (i.e., etching time), providing new paradigm for rational design and engineering of anisotropic nanostructures.

High aspect ratio 10-nm-scale nanoaperture arrays with template-guided metal dewetting.

Project description:We introduce an approach to fabricate ordered arrays of 10-nm-scale silica-filled apertures in a metal film without etching or liftoff. Using low temperature (<400°C) thermal dewetting of metal films guided by nano-patterned templates, apertures with aspect ratios up to 5:1 are demonstrated. Apertures form spontaneously during the thermal process without need for further processing. Although the phenomenon of dewetting has been well studied, this is the first demonstration of its use in the fabrication of nanoapertures in a spatially controllable manner. In particular, the achievement of 10-nm length-scale patterning at high aspect ratio with thermal dewetting is unprecedented. By varying the nanotemplate design, we show its strong influence over the positions and sizes of the nanoapertures. In addition, we construct a three-dimensional phase field model of metal dewetting on nano-patterned substrates. The simulation data obtained closely corroborates our experimental results and reveals new insights to template dewetting at the nanoscale. Taken together, this fabrication method and simulation model form a complete toolbox for 10-nm-scale patterning using template-guided dewetting that could be extended to a wide range of material systems and geometries.

Efficient synthesis of oligofluoranthene nanorods with tunable functionalities.

Project description:Strongly fluorescence-emitting oligofluoranthene (OFA) nanorods are readily synthesized by a direct template-free chemical oxidative oligomerization of fluoranthene in nitromethane containing ferric chloride as an oxidant. The OFAs likely consist of five fluoranthene units containing cyclic pentamers with crystalline order and tunable electrical conductivity across 12 orders of magnitude. The OFA nanorods are heat-resistant materials and efficient precursors for macroporous carbon materials with high carbon yield in argon at 1100 °C. In particular, the optimal ring-like pentamer shows 12.2 times stronger cyan fluorescence-emission than recognized highly fluorescent fluoranthene under the same conditions, which makes the OFAs into ideal strong fluorescent emitters, tunable conductors, and high carbon-yield precursors for the preparation of sensors and carbon materials. These findings demonstrate an advance in the direct synthesis of oligomers from fused-ring aromatic hydrocarbons and provide a potential direction to optimize the synthesis and functionalities of wholly aromatic nanomaterials.

Tunable Ultra-high Aspect Ratio Nanorod Architectures grown on Porous Substrate via Electromigration.

Project description:The interplay between porosity and electromigration can be used to manipulate atoms resulting in mass fabrication of nanoscale structures. Electromigration usually results in the accumulation of atoms accompanied by protrusions at the anode and atomic depletion causing voids at the cathode. Here we show that in porous media the pattern of atomic deposition and depletion is altered such that atomic accumulation occurs over the whole surface and not just at the anode. The effect is explained by the interaction between atomic drift due to electric current and local temperature gradients resulting from intense Joule heating at constrictions between grains. Utilizing this effect, a porous silver substrate is used to mass produce free-standing silver nanorods with very high aspect ratios of more than 200 using current densities of the order of 10(8) A/m(2). This simple method results in reproducible formation of shaped nanorods, with independent control over their density and length. Consequently, complex patterns of high quality single crystal nanorods can be formed in-situ with significant advantages over competing methods of nanorod formation for plasmonics, energy storage and sensing applications.

Yolk-Shell Polystyrene@Microporous Organic Network: A Smart Template with Thermally Disassemblable Yolk To Engineer Hollow MoS<sub>2</sub>/C Composites for High-Performance Supercapacitors.

Project description:Yolk-shell-type polystyrene@microporous organic network (Y-PS@MON) materials were prepared by the Sonogashira coupling of tetra(4-ethynylphenyl)methane and 1,4-diiodobenzene on the surface of PS@SiO2 and by the etching of SiO2. The diameter of PS yolk spheres and the thickness of MON shells were 150 and ∼10 nm, respectively. The thickness of the void space between the PS yolk and the MON shell was ∼30 nm. Y-PS@MONs were used as templates for the synthesis of MoS2/C composite materials. Because of the microporosity of the MON shells and the void space between the yolk and the shell, MoS2 precursor compounds were efficiently incorporated into Y-PS@MONs. The heat treatment under argon resulted in the formation of hollow MoS2/C composites. The contents of MoS2 in the composites were systematically controlled by changing the amounts of precursor. MoS2/C with 58 wt % of MoS2 showed the best energy storage performance with a capacitance of 418 F/g at a 0.5 A/g current density as an electrode material of a coin cell supercapacitor, which is attributable to its hollow structure, high surface area, and the good distribution of the sliced MoS2 in the carbon matrix. Also, the MoS2/C-58 composite showed excellent retention of capacitances during 5000 cycles.

Effect of aspect ratio and surface defects on the photocatalytic activity of ZnO nanorods.

Project description:ZnO, aside from TiO2, has been considered as a promising material for purification and disinfection of water and air, and remediation of hazardous waste, owing to its high activity, environment-friendly feature and lower cost. However, their poor visible light utilization greatly limited their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate the fabrication of different aspect ratios of the ZnO nanorods with surface defects by mechanical-assisted thermal decomposition method. The experiments revealed that ZnO nanorods with higher aspect ratio and surface defects show significantly higher photocatalytic performances.
