Transport Properties of Polysulfide Species in Lithium-Sulfur Battery Electrolytes: Coupling of Experiment and Theory.

ABSTRACT: A comprehensive experimental and theoretical analysis of the isothermal transport of species for the two model ternary-electrolytes with LiTFSI-Li2S4/dioxolane (DOL)-dimethoxyethane (DME) and LiTFSI-Li2S6/DOL-DME formulations is presented. An unambiguous picture of the polysulfide's mobility is set forth after a detailed investigation of the macroscopic transference number and diffusion coefficients. The new findings of incongruent diffusion for Li2S4 species and high significance of cross-term diffusion coefficients reformulate a fledgling view of the prevalent redox-shuttle phenomena. The practical implications of this complex mechanism are discussed in detail.

A lithium-ion sulfur battery using a polymer, polysulfide-added membrane.

Project description:In this paper we report the performances of a lithium-ion sulfur battery characterized by a polymer configuration. The cell, based on a sulfur-carbon cathode, a Li-Sn-C nanostructured anode and a PEO-based, polysulfide-added electrolyte, shows very good electrochemical performances in terms of stability and delivered capacity. The remarkable cell performances are ascribed to the mitigation of the cathode dissolution process due to the buffer action ensured by the polysulfide added to the polymer electrolyte. This electrolyte configuration allows the achievement of a stable capacity ranging from 500 to 1500 mAh gS(-1), depending on the cycling rate. The use of a polymer electrolyte and the replacement of the lithium metal with a Li-Sn-C nanostructured alloy are expected to guarantee high safety content, thus suggesting the battery here studied as advanced energy storage system.

High sulfur-containing carbon polysulfide polymer as a novel cathode material for lithium-sulfur battery.

Project description:The lithium-sulfur battery, which offers a high energy density and is environmental friendly, is a promising next generation of rechargeable energy storage system. However, despite these attractive attributes, the commercialization of lithium-sulfur battery is primarily hindered by the parasitic reactions between the Li metal anode and dissolved polysulfide species from the cathode during the cycling process. Herein, we synthesize the sulfur-rich carbon polysulfide polymer and demonstrate that it is a promising cathode material for high performance lithium-sulfur battery. The electrochemical studies reveal that the carbon polysulfide polymer exhibits superb reversibility and cycle stability. This is due to that the well-designed structure of the carbon polysulfide polymer has several advantages, especially, the strong chemical interaction between sulfur and the carbon framework (C-S bonds) inhibits the shuttle effect and the ? electrons of the carbon polysulfide compound enhance the transfer of electrons and Li+. Furthermore, as-prepared carbon polysulfide polymer-graphene hybrid cathode achieves outstanding cycle stability and relatively high capacity. This work highlights the potential promise of the carbon polysulfide polymer as the cathode material for high performance lithium-sulfur battery.

Tunnel Structure Enhanced Polysulfide Conversion for Inhibiting "Shuttle Effect" in Lithium-Sulfur Battery.

Project description:The Lithium sulfur (Li-S) battery has a great potential to replace lithium-ion batteries due to its high-energy density. However, the "shuttle effect" of polysulfide intermediates (Li2S8, Li2S6, Li2S4, etc.) from the cathode can lead to rapid capacity decay and low coulombic efficiency, thus limiting its further development. Anchoring polysulfide and inhibiting polysulfide migration in electrolytes is one of the focuses in Li-S battery. It is well known that polar metal oxides-manganese oxides (MnO2) are normally used as an effective inhibitor for its polysulfide inhibiting properties. Considering the natural 1D tunnel structure, MnO2 with three kinds of typical tunnel-type were screened to study the effects of the tunnel size on the adsorption capacity of polysulfide. We found that MnO2 with larger tunnel sizes has stronger chemisorption capacity of polysulfide. It promotes the conversion of polysulfide, and corresponding cathode exhibits better cycle reliability and rate performance in the cell comparison tests. This work should point out a new strategy for the cathode design of advanced Li-S battery by controlling the tunnel size.

Polysulfide Speciation and Migration in Catholyte Lithium-Sulfur Cells.

Project description:Semi-liquid catholyte Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) cells have shown to be a promising path to realize high energy density energy storage devices. In general, Li-S cells rely on the conversion of elemental sulfur to soluble polysulfide species. In the case of catholyte cells, the active material is added through polysulfide species dissolved in the electrolyte. Herein, we use operando Raman spectroscopy to track the speciation and migration of polysulfides in the catholyte to shed light on the processes taking place. Combined with ex-situ surface and electrochemical analysis we show that the migration of polysulfides is central in order to maximize the performance in terms of capacity (active material utilization) as well as interphase stability on the Li-metal anode during cycling. More specifically we show that using a catholyte where the polysulfides have the dual roles of active material and conducting species, e. g. no traditional Li-salt (such as LiTFSI) is present, results in a higher mobility and faster migration of polysulfides. We also reveal how the formation of long chain polysulfides in the catholyte is delayed during charge as a result of rapid formation and migration of shorter chain species, beneficial for reaching higher capacities. However, the depletion of ionic species during the last stage of charge, due to the conversion to and precipitation of elemental sulfur on the cathode support, results in polarization of the cell before full conversion can be achieved.

Highly Solvating Electrolytes for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:There is a critical need to evaluate lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries with practically relevant high sulfur loadings and minimal electrolyte. Under such conditions, the concentration of soluble polysulfide intermediates in the electrolyte drastically increases, which can alter the fundamental nature of the solution-mediated discharge and thereby the total sulfur utilization. In this work, we present an investigation into various high donor number (DN) electrolytes that allow for increased polysulfide dissolution, and demonstrate how this property may in fact be necessary for increasing sulfur utilization at low electrolyte and high loading conditions. The solvents dimethylacetamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and 1-methylimidazole are holistically evaluated against dimethoxyethane as electrolyte co-solvents in Li-S cells, and they are used to investigate chemical and electrochemical properties of polysulfide species at both dilute and practically relevant conditions. The nature of speciation exhibited by lithium polysulfides is found to vary significantly between these concentrations, particularly in regards to the S3•- species. Furthermore, the extent of the instability in conventional electrolyte solvents and high DN solvents with both lithium metal and polysulfides is thoroughly investigated. These studies establish a basis for future efforts into rationally designing an optimal electrolyte for a lean electrolyte, high energy density Li-S battery.

Solvation-property relationship of lithium-sulphur battery electrolytes.

Project description:The Li-S battery is a promising next-generation battery chemistry that offers high energy density and low cost. The Li-S battery has a unique chemistry with intermediate sulphur species readily solvated in electrolytes, and understanding their implications is important from both practical and fundamental perspectives. In this study, we utilise the solvation free energy of electrolytes as a metric to formulate solvation-property relationships in various electrolytes and investigate their impact on the solvated lithium polysulphides. We find that solvation free energy influences Li-S battery voltage profile, lithium polysulphide solubility, Li-S battery cyclability and the Li metal anode; weaker solvation leads to lower 1st plateau voltage, higher 2nd plateau voltage, lower lithium polysulphide solubility, and superior cyclability of Li-S full cells and Li metal anodes. We believe that relationships delineated in this study can guide the design of high-performance electrolytes for Li-S batteries.

Solar-Driven Rechargeable Lithium-Sulfur Battery.

Project description:Solar cells and rechargeable batteries are two key technologies for energy conversion and storage in modern society. Here, an integrated solar-driven rechargeable lithium-sulfur battery system using a joint carbon electrode in one structure unit is proposed. Specifically, three perovskite solar cells are assembled serially in a single substrate to photocharge a high energy lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery, accompanied by direct conversion of the solar energy to chemical energy. In the subsequent discharge process, the chemical energy stored in the Li-S battery is further converted to electrical energy. Therefore, the newly designed battery is capable of achieving solar-to-chemical energy conversion under solar-driven conditions, and subsequently delivering electrical energy from the stored chemical energy. With an optimized structure design, a high overall energy conversion efficiency of 5.14% is realized for the integrated battery. Moreover, owing to the self-adjusting photocharge advantage, the battery system can retain high specific capacity up to 762.4 mAh g-1 under a high photocharge rate within 30 min, showing an effective photocharging feature.

Superconcentrated electrolytes for a high-voltage lithium-ion battery.

Project description:Finding a viable electrolyte for next-generation 5?V-class lithium-ion batteries is of primary importance. A long-standing obstacle has been metal-ion dissolution at high voltages. The LiPF6 salt in conventional electrolytes is chemically unstable, which accelerates transition metal dissolution of the electrode material, yet beneficially suppresses oxidative dissolution of the aluminium current collector; replacing LiPF6 with more stable lithium salts may diminish transition metal dissolution but unfortunately encounters severe aluminium oxidation. Here we report an electrolyte design that can solve this dilemma. By mixing a stable lithium salt LiN(SO2F)2 with dimethyl carbonate solvent at extremely high concentrations, we obtain an unusual liquid showing a three-dimensional network of anions and solvent molecules that coordinate strongly to Li(+) ions. This simple formulation of superconcentrated LiN(SO2F)2/dimethyl carbonate electrolyte inhibits the dissolution of both aluminium and transition metal at around 5?V, and realizes a high-voltage LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4/graphite battery that exhibits excellent cycling durability, high rate capability and enhanced safety.

The Polysulfide-Cathode Binding Energy Landscape for Lithium Sulfide Growth in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:A cathode substrate with strong adsorption of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) has been preferred for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. However, the recent finding that controlled growth of lithium sulfides (Li2 S) during discharge is crucial for S utilization stimulates improvement of this preference. Here, the Li2 S growth and cell capacity in the LiPS binding energy landscape of cathode substrates are investigated. Specifically, Co-based ternary oxides are employed to obtain binding energies in the range of 4.0-7.4 eV. Of these substrates, only the MnCo2 O4 substrate with moderate LiPS affinity exhibits 3D Li2 S growth. The MnCo2 O4 cells achieve high sulfur utilization up to 84% at 0.2 C and excellent performance even under high sulfur loading/lean electrolyte conditions. In contrast, weak affinity substrates such as ZnCo2 O4 and strong affinity substrates such as NiCo2 O4 and CuCo2 O4 exhibit low discharge capacity with 2D Li2 S growth. For optimal LiPS affinity driving 3D growth, a balance between promoting LiPS adsorption and diffusion limitation in the LiPS adsorption layer is suggested.

Influence of Lithium Polysulfide Clustering on the Kinetics of Electrochemical Conversion in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:The electrochemistry of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is heavily reliant on the structure and dynamics of lithium polysulfides, which dissolve into the liquid electrolyte and mediate the electrochemical conversion process during operation. This behavior is considerably distinct from the widely used lithium-ion batteries, necessitating new mechanistic insights to fully understand the electrochemical phenomena. Testing at low-temperature conditions presents a unique opportunity to glean new insights into the chemistry in kinetically constrained environments. Under such conditions, despite the low freezing point and favorable ionic conductivity of the glyme-based electrolyte, Li-S batteries exhibit counterintuitively poor performance. Here, we show that beyond just existing in single-molecule conformations, lithium polysulfides tend to cluster and aggregate in solution, particularly at low-temperature conditions, which subsequently constrains the kinetics of electrochemical conversion. Energetics and coordination implications of this behavior are extended towards a new framework for understanding the solution-coordination dynamics of dissolved lithium species. Based off this framework, a favorable strongly-bound lithium salt is introduced in the Li-S electrolyte to disrupt polysulfide clustered networks, enabling substantially enhanced low-temperature electrochemical performance. More broadly, this mechanistic insight heightens our understanding of polysulfide chemistry irrespective of temperature, confirming the link between the solution conformation of active material and electrochemical behavior.
