Synthesis of Cis,syndiotactic A-alt-B Copolymers from Two Enantiomerically Pure Trans-2,3-Disubstituted-5,6-Norbornenes.

ABSTRACT: Cis,syndiotacticA-alt-B copolymers, where A and B are two enantiomerically pure trans-2,3-disubstituted-5,6-norbornenes with "opposite" chiralities, can be prepared with stereogenic-at-metal initiators of the type M(NR)(CHR')(OR")(pyrrolide). Formation of a high percentage of alternating AB copolymer linkages relies on an inversion of chirality at the metal with each propagating step and a relatively fast formation of an AB sequence as a consequence of a preferred diastereomeric relationship between the chirality at the metal and the chirality of the monomer. This approach to formation of an alternating AB copolymer contrasts dramatically with the principle of forming AB copolymers from achiral monomers and catalysts.

Project description:A highly efficient synthesis of enantiomerically pure (S) and (R)-isomers of N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)arylamides has been developed with good overall yields in a two step process. The key step involves the ring opening of the chiral epoxide with a nitrogen heterocyclic carbene (NHC) and further rearrangement to chiral N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)arylamides in high yields and enantioselectivity. During the reaction, no erosion in chiral purity was observed.

Isotactic and Syndiotactic Alternating Ethylene/Propylene Copolymers Obtained Through Non-Catalytic Hydrogenation of Highly Stereoregular cis-1,4 Poly(1,3-diene)s.

Project description:The homogeneous non-catalytic hydrogenation of cis-1,4 poly(isoprene), isotactic cis-1,4 poly(1,3-pentadiene) and syndiotactic cis-1,4 poly(1,3-pentadiene) with diimide, formed by thermal decomposition of para-toluenesulfonylhydrazide, is examined. Perfectly alternating ethylene/propylene copolymers having different tacticity (i.e., isotactic and syndiotactic), which are difficult to synthesize by stereospecific copolymerization of the corresponding monomers, are obtained. Both isotactic and syndiotactic alternating ethylene/propylene copolymers are amorphous, with very low glass transition temperatures.

Enantiomerically Pure Tetravalent Neptunium Amidinates: Synthesis and Characterization.

Project description:The synthesis of a tetravalent neptunium amidinate [NpCl((S)-PEBA)3 ] (1) ((S)-PEBA=(S,S)-N,N'-bis-(1-phenylethyl)-benzamidinate) is reported. This complex represents the first structurally characterized enantiopure transuranic compound. Reactivity studies with halide/pseudohalides yielding [NpX((S)-PEBA)3 ] (X=F (2), Br (3), N3 (4)) have shown that the chirality-at-metal is preserved for all compounds in the solid state. Furthermore, they represent an unprecedented example of a structurally characterized metal-organic Np complex featuring a Np-Br (3) bond. In addition, 4 is the only reported tetravalent transuranic azide. All compounds were additionally characterized in solution using para-magnetic NMR spectroscopy showing an expected C3 -symmetry at low temperatures.

Project description:In the title compound, C(18)H(10)N(4), the pyrazine ring is oriented at dihedral angles of 48.08 (7) and 44.80 (7)° with respect to the phenyl rings, while the dihedral angle between the phenyl rings is 49.47 (7)°. In the crystal structure, weak π-π contacts between pyrazine and phenyl rings [centroid-centroid distance = 3.813 (1) Å] may stabilize the structure.

Enantiomerically pure alpha-amino aldehydes from silylated alpha-amino acids.

Project description:The disilylation of alpha-amino acids 1 to provide 2 (72-87%) was achieved without racemization. An unprecedented borane-mediated semi-reduction strategy was devised to convert 2 to stable, isolable oxazaborolidines 3 (100%) which were hydrolyzed to provide 5 (49-60%) as pure, stable compounds. Analysis of the Mosher amides (8) of the gamma-amino esters 7 reveals that < or =2% racemization occurs in the 1 --> 8 conversions.

Diastereoselective synthesis and biological evaluation of enantiomerically pure tricyclic indolines.

Project description:Tricyclic indolines are common in both natural products and synthetic chemical probes. In this study we demonstrated that enantiomerically pure tricyclic indolines can be prepared from an inexpensive commercially available chiral starting material, pyroglutamic acid. The synthesis features a highly diastereoselective gold-catalyzed cyclization of alkyne-tethered indoles and subsequent diastereoselective reductive ring-opening reaction. Using this approach, we synthesized analogs of our previously discovered tricyclic indoline probes that possess antibacterial and resistance-modifying activity. The biological activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) of these analogues was evaluated and reported. The synthetic approach reported may be leveraged in the future to prepare diastereopure chemical probes for the determination of biological targets for drug discovery.

Enantiomerically Pure 5,13-Dicyano-9-oxa[7]helicene: Synthesis and Study.

Project description:Optically pure dicyano oxa[7]helicenes and helicene-like molecules have been prepared and investigated for their optical behavior. The isomers of the intermediate 4,4'-biphen-anthrene-3,3'-diol were resolved by physically separating their 1-menthyl carbonate derivatives. In this work a mild method was developed to cleave ArOMe in presence of a cyano group. The optical rotation of atropisomeric diol, helicenes-like compounds and the oxa[7]helicenes was observed to be in increasing order, while the molecules also showed good response to circularly polarized luminescence.

Syndiotactic Poly(4-methyl-1-pentene)-Based Stereoregular Diblock Copolymers: Synthesis and Self-Assembly Studies

Project description:Syndiotactic poly(4-methyl-1-pentene) (sP4M1P)-based stereoregular diblock copolymers, namely sP4M1P-b-polystyrene and sP4M1P-b-polymethylmethacrylate, were prepared from an α-bromoester-capped sP4M1P macroinitiator, which was chain extended with styrene and methyl methacrylate, respectively, via the atom transfer radical polymerization reaction. The α-bromoester-capped sP4M1P was generated by the esterification of hydroxyl-capped sP4M1P with α-bromoisobutyryl bromide. The hydroxyl-capped sP4M1P was synthesized by inducing a selective chain transfer reaction to aluminum during the syndiospecific polymerization of 4-methyl-1-pentene in the presence of a syndiospecific metallocene catalyst. As stereoregular diblock copolymers are difficult to prepare using existing methods, the current study offers an effective process for the preparation of sP4M1P-based stereoregular diblock copolymers. These copolymers were found to have well-defined architectures and they can undergo molecular self-assembly into ordered nanostructures, as evidenced by small-angle X-ray scattering analyses.
