Structural and electronic characterisation of π-extended tetrathiafulvalene derivatives as active components in field-effect transistors.

ABSTRACT: The electronic and structural properties of two tetrathiafulvalene derivatives bearing aromatic benzene rings are reported. Thin film transistors of these materials show p-type characteristics with comparable mobility values. It is found that the rigidification of the molecule is beneficial for reducing the reorganisation energy but also has an unfavorable impact on the electronic structure dimensionality.

Single-molecule conductance of a chemically modified, π-extended tetrathiafulvalene and its charge-transfer complex with F4TCNQ.

Project description:We describe the synthesis and single-molecule electrical transport properties of a molecular wire containing a π-extended tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) group and its charge-transfer complex with F4TCNQ. We form single-molecule junctions using the in situ break junction technique using a homebuilt scanning tunneling microscope with a range of conductance between 10 G0 down to 10(-7) G0. Within this range we do not observe a clear conductance signature of the neutral parent molecule, suggesting either that its conductance is too low or that it does not form a stable junction. Conversely, we do find a clear conductance signature in the experiments carried out on the charge-transfer complex. Due to the fact we expected this species to have a higher conductance than the neutral molecule, we believe this supports the idea that the conductance of the neutral molecule is very low, below our measurement sensitivity. This idea is further supported by theoretical calculations. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first reported single-molecule conductance measurements on a molecular charge-transfer species.

Electrocatalytic Behavior of Tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) and Extended Tetrathiafulvalene (exTTF) [FeFe] Hydrogenase Mimics.

Project description:TTF- and exTTF-containing [(μ-S2)Fe2(CO)6] complexes have been prepared by the photochemical reaction of TTF or exTTF and [(μ-S2)Fe2(CO)6]. These complexes are able to interact with PAHs. In the absence of air and in acid media an electrocatalytic dihydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurs, similarly to analogous [(μ-S2)Fe2(CO)6] complexes. However, in the presence of air, the TTF and exTTF organic moieties strongly influence the electrochemistry of these systems. The reported data may be valuable in the design of [FeFe] hydrogenase mimics able to combine the HER properties of the [FeFe] cores with the unique TTF properties.

A DFT Study on the Electronic Structures and Conducting Properties of Rubrene and its Derivatives in Organic Field-Effect Transistors.

Project description:We systematically studied the electronic structures and conducting properties of rubrene and its derivatives reported recently, and disscussed the influences of electron-withdrawing groups and chemical oxidation on the reorganization energies, crystal packing, electronic couplings, and charge injection barrier of rubrene. Hirshfeld surface analysis and quantum-chemical calculations revealed that the introduction of CF3 groups into rubrene decreases the H···H repulsive interaction and increases intermolecular F···H/H···F attractive interactions, which resulted in the tight packing arrangement and the increase of the electronic couplings, and finally cause the higer intrinsic hole-mobility in bis(trifluoromethyl)-dimethyl-rubrene crystal (μh = 19.2 cm2 V-1 s-1) than in rubrene crystal (μh = 15.8 cm2 V-1 s-1). In comparison, chemical oxidation reduces charge-carrier mobility of rubrene crystal by 2~4 orders of magnitude and increased the hole and electron injection barrier, which partly explains the rubrene-based field-effect transistor performance degrades upon exposure to air. Furthermore, we also discussed the influence of structural parameters of carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode on charge injection process, which suggests that the regulation of CNT diameters and increasing in thickness is an effective strategy to optimize CNT work functions and improve n-type OFET performances based on these organic materials.

Quinoidal Small Molecule Containing Ring-Extended Termini for Organic Field-Effect Transistors.

Project description:In this work, we synthesized and characterized two quinoidal small molecules based on benzothiophene modified and original isatin terminal units, benzothiophene quinoidal thiophene (BzTQuT) and quinoidal thiophene (QuT), respectively, to investigate the effect of introducing a fused ring into the termini of quinoidal molecules. Extending the terminal unit of the quinoidal molecule affected the extension of π-electron delocalization and decreased the bond length alternation, which led to the downshifting of the collective Raman band and dramatically lowering the band gap. Organic field-effect transistor (OFET) devices in neat BzTQuT films showed p-type transport behavior with low hole mobility, which was ascribed to the unsuitable film morphology for charge transport. By blending with an amorphous insulating polymer, polystyrene, and poly(2-vinylnaphthalene), an OFET based on a BzTQuT film annealed at 150 °C exhibited improved mobility up to 0.09 cm2 V-1 s-1. This work successfully demonstrated that the extension of terminal groups into the quinoidal structure should be an effective strategy for constructing narrow band gap and high charge transporting organic semiconductors.

[2.2]Paracyclophane derivatives containing tetrathiafulvalene moieties.

Project description:The synthesis of [2.2]paracyclophane derivatives containing tetrathiafulvalene units has been accomplished by the coupling reaction of 4-([2.2]paracyclophan-4-yl)-1,3-dithiol-2-thione in the presence of trimethylphosphite. The 1,3-dithiol-2-thione derivative was in turn synthesized by the regioselective bromination of 4-acetyl[2.2]paracyclophane, then through the corresponding dithiocarbamates and 1,3-dithiolium salts.

Diverse π-π stacking motifs modulate electrical conductivity in tetrathiafulvalene-based metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:We report three electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based on a tetrathiafulvalene linker and La3+. Depending on the solvent ratios and temperatures used in their solvothermal synthesis, these MOFs crystallize with different topologies containing distinct π-π stacking sequences of the ligand. Notably, their transport properties correlate rationally with the stacking motifs: longer S···S contact distances between adjacent ligands coincide with lower electrical conductivities and higher activation energies. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopic measurements reveal ligand-based intervalence charge transfer bands in each phase, implicating charge delocalization among mixed-valent tetrathiafulvalene units as the dominant mode of transport. Overall, these frameworks demonstrate how tuning the intermolecular interactions in MOFs serves as a route towards controlling their physical properties.

Interfacial electronic effects in functional biolayers integrated into organic field-effect transistors.

Project description:Biosystems integration into an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) structure is achieved by spin coating phospholipid or protein layers between the gate dielectric and the organic semiconductor. An architecture directly interfacing supported biological layers to the OFET channel is proposed and, strikingly, both the electronic properties and the biointerlayer functionality are fully retained. The platform bench tests involved OFETs integrating phospholipids and bacteriorhodopsin exposed to 1-5% anesthetic doses that reveal drug-induced changes in the lipid membrane. This result challenges the current anesthetic action model relying on the so far provided evidence that doses much higher than clinically relevant ones (2.4%) do not alter lipid bilayers' structure significantly. Furthermore, a streptavidin embedding OFET shows label-free biotin electronic detection at 10 parts-per-trillion concentration level, reaching state-of-the-art fluorescent assay performances. These examples show how the proposed bioelectronic platform, besides resulting in extremely performing biosensors, can open insights into biologically relevant phenomena involving membrane weak interfacial modifications.

Fully integrated ultra-sensitive electronic nose based on organic field-effect transistors.

Project description:Modern solid-state gas sensors approaching ppb-level limit of detection open new perspectives for process control, environmental monitoring and exhaled breath analysis. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) are especially promising for gas sensing due to their outstanding sensitivities, low cost and small power consumption. However, they suffer of poor selectivity, requiring development of cross-selective arrays to distinguish analytes, and environmental instability, especially in humid air. Here we present the first fully integrated OFET-based electronic nose with the whole sensor array located on a single substrate. It features down to 30 ppb limit of detection provided by monolayer thick active layers and operates in air with up to 95% relative humidity. By means of principal component analysis, it is able to discriminate toxic air pollutants and monitor meat product freshness. The approach presented paves the way for developing affordable air sensing networks for the Internet of Things.

Red-shifted optical absorption induced by donor-acceptor-donor π-extended dibenzalacetone derivatives.

Project description:Chalcones demonstrate significant absorption in the near ultraviolet-visible spectrum, making them valuable for applications such as solar cells, light-emitting diodes, and nonlinear optics. This study investigates four dibenzalacetone derivatives (DBAd), DBA, DBC, DEP, and DMA, examining the impact of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups and conjugation elongation on their electronic structure in solvents of varying polarities. Using the Polarizable Continuum Model (PCM) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT), we characterized the excited states of these compounds. Our results reveal a consistent red-shift in the absorption spectrum, with electron-donating groups like ethoxy inducing a more pronounced red-shift than chlorine. Extending conjugation in DMA further shifted the absorption band to lower energy. Solvatochromism influenced the absorption intensities, underscoring the importance of evaluating parameters beyond λ max. Although our methodologies provided a satisfactory correlation between theoretical and experimental data, they also indicate the need for further theoretical models to accurately capture solute-solvent interactions and describe charge-separated states. The results indicated that dibenzalacetone derivatives have potential as alternative materials for development of organic solar cells.

Synthesis of π-Extended Thiele's and Chichibabin's Hydrocarbons and Effect of the π-Congestion on Conformations and Electronic States.

Project description:The biradicaloid of Chichibabin's hydrocarbon exits in a unique thermal equilibrium between closed-shell singlet and open-shell triplet forms. Conceptually, the incorporation of nonplanar aromatic groups, such as anthraquinodimethane (AQD), in these species could bring about stabilization of the individual singlet and triplet spin biradicaloids by creating a high energy barrier for conformational interconversion between folded (singlet) and twisted (triplet) forms. Moreover, this alteration could introduce the possibility of controlling spin states through conformational changes induced by chemical and physical processes. Herein, we report the preparation of AQD-containing, π-extended Thiele's (A-TH) and Chichibabin's (A-CH) hydrocarbons, which have highly π-congested structures resulting from the presence of bulky 9-anthryl units. The π-congestion in these substances leads to steric frustration about carbon-carbon double bonds and creates flexible dynamic motion with a moderate activation barrier between folded singlet and twisted triplet states. These constraints make it possible to isolate the twisted triplet state of A-CH. In addition, simple mechanical grinding of the folded singlet of A-CH produces the twisted triplet.
