After outlining the reasons for citation, we use two case studies of citation amnesia in the field of hypothetical carbon allotropes to present a computer-age search tool (SACADA) in that subsubfield. Finally, we advise on good search practice, including what to do if you miss a citation.

Compressed carbon nanotubes: a family of new multifunctional carbon allotropes.

Project description:The exploration of novel functional carbon polymorphs is an enduring topic of scientific investigations. In this paper, we present simulations demonstrating metastable carbon phases as the result of pressure induced carbon nanotube polymerization. The configuration, bonding, electronic, and mechanical characteristics of carbon polymers strongly depend on the imposed hydrostatic/non-hydrostatic pressure, as well as on the geometry of the raw carbon nanotubes including diameter, chirality, stacking manner, and wall number. Especially, transition processes under hydrostatic/non-hydrostatic pressure are investigated, revealing unexpectedly low transition barriers and demonstrating sp(2)?sp(3) bonding changes as well as peculiar oscillations of electronic property (e.g., semiconducting?metallic?semiconducting transitions). These polymerized nanotubes show versatile and superior physical properties, such as superhardness, high tensile strength and ductility, and tunable electronic properties (semiconducting or metallic).

Novamene: A new class of carbon allotropes.

Project description:We announce a new class of carbon allotropes. The basis of this new classification resides on the concept of combining hexagonal diamond (sp3 bonded carbon - lonsdaleite) and ring carbon (sp2 bonded carbon - graphene). Since hexagonal diamond acts as an insulator and sp2 bonded rings act as conductors, these predicted materials have potential applications for transistors and other electronic components. We describe the structure of a proposed series of carbon allotropes, novamene, and carry out a detailed computational analysis of the structural and electronic properties of the simplest compound in this class: the single-ring novamene. In addition, we suggest how hundreds of different allotropes of carbon could be constructed within this class.

Prediction of highly stable 2D carbon allotropes based on azulenoid kekulene.

Project description:Despite enormous interest in two-dimensional (2D) carbon allotropes, discovering stable 2D carbon structures with practically useful electronic properties presents a significant challenge. Computational modeling in this work shows that fusing azulene-derived macrocycles - azulenoid kekulenes (AK) - into graphene leads to the most stable 2D carbon allotropes reported to date, excluding graphene. Density functional theory predicts that placing the AK units in appropriate relative positions in the graphene lattice opens the 0.54 eV electronic bandgap and leads to the appearance of the remarkable 0.80 eV secondary gap between conduction bands - a feature that is rare in 2D carbon allotropes but is known to enhance light absorption and emission in 3D semiconductors. Among porous AK structures, one material stands out as a stable narrow-multigap (0.36 and 0.56 eV) semiconductor with light charge carriers (me = 0.17 m0, mh = 0.19 m0), whereas its boron nitride analog is a wide-multigap (1.51 and 0.82 eV) semiconductor with light carriers (me = 0.39 m0, mh = 0.32 m0). The multigap engineering strategy proposed here can be applied to other carbon nanostructures creating novel 2D materials for electronic and optoelectronic applications.

Unusual Sonochemical Assembly between Carbon Allotropes for High Strain-Tolerant Conductive Nanocomposites.

Project description:Facile methods toward strain-tolerant graphene-based electronic components remain scarce. Although being frequently used to disperse low-dimensional carbonaceous materials, ultrasonication (US) has never been reliable for fabricating stretchable carbonaceous nanocomposite (SCNC). Inspired by the unusual sonochemical assembly between graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotube (CNT), we verified the roots-like GO-CNT covalent bonding, rather than just ?-? conjugation, was formed during US. In addition, the shockwave-induced collision in the binary-component system enables a burst of fragmentation at the early stage, spatially homogeneous hybridization, and time-dependent restoration of graphitic domains. All of the above are distinct from extensive fragmentation of a conventional single-component system and ?-? conjugative assembly. The optimized SCNC exhibits conductivity comparable to reduced monolayer GO and outperforms ?-? assemblies in retaining electrical conductance at a strain of 160%-among one of the best reported stretchable conductors. Raman analysis and mechanics simulation confirm the dominant role of counterweighing between the intrinsic and external strains on the mechano-response and durability of SCNC. This work suggests the guideline of creating multiple-component sonochemical systems for various functional nanocomposites.

New carbon allotropes with helical chains of complementary chirality connected by ethene-type ?-conjugation.

Project description:We here identify by ab initio calculations two distinct three-dimensional three-connected (3D3C) chiral framework structures of carbon in and I41/amd symmetry, respectively, which comprise 3-fold and 4-fold helical chains with complementary chirality. The helical carbon chains are connected by an ethene-type planar ?-conjugation, and the resulting structures contain a network of sp(2) carbon bonds with one-third being double bonds between the chains and two-thirds single bonds along the chains. Phonon and electronic band structure calculations show that these chiral carbene structures are dynamically stable and exhibit a large band gap (2.4 ~ 2.9 eV). This semiconducting nature reflects a key distinction from previously proposed metallic isomers of helical or zigzag carbon chains with twisted ? states that are dynamically unstable. The present results solve the long-sought 3D3C all-sp(2) carbon structures and may help design other covalent bonding networks.

Three-Dimensional Carbon Allotropes Comprising Phenyl Rings and Acetylenic Chains in sp+sp(2) Hybrid Networks.

Project description:We here identify by ab initio calculations a new type of three-dimensional (3D) carbon allotropes that consist of phenyl rings connected by linear acetylenic chains in sp+sp(2) bonding networks. These structures are constructed by inserting acetylenic or diacetylenic bonds into an all sp(2)-hybridized rhombohedral polybenzene lattice, and the resulting 3D phenylacetylene and phenyldiacetylene nets comprise a 12-atom and 18-atom rhombohedral primitive unit cells in the symmetry, which are characterized as the 3D chiral crystalline modification of 2D graphyne and graphdiyne, respectively. Simulated phonon spectra reveal that these structures are dynamically stable. Electronic band calculations indicate that phenylacetylene is metallic, while phenyldiacetylene is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of 0.58?eV. The present results establish a new type of carbon phases and offer insights into their outstanding structural and electronic properties.

Morphology-Controlled Tensile Mechanical Characteristics in Graphene Allotropes.

Project description:A number of graphene allotropes constructed by sp3, sp2, and sp hybrid orbitals have recently been proposed to provide the broad potential for practical applications. Here, using molecular dynamics simulation, the structural and tensile characteristics of nine distinct graphene allotropes have been investigated to understand their morphology-controlled mechanical properties. Results show that the averaged out-of-plane displacement is independent of nonhexagons while being dominated by the arrangement of carbon polygons on the sheets. Each sheet possesses unique surface morphology and in-plane tensile properties that significantly vary with morphology and anisotropic crystalline orientation. Brittle, semibrittle, or ductile failure is observed, depending on the evolution of their packed polygons in facilitating tension deformation and in dissipating energy. Particularly, pentagraphene exhibits superductility as a consequence of large-scale structural transformations, accommodating stress relaxation beyond initial failure. Two distinct plastic deformation patterns in overstretched pentagraphene are uncovered, depending on the tension directions: one is dominated by structural transition from sp3-carbon-contained penta-(C5) to mixed sp2-carbon polygons and the other is mainly controlled by a stepwise pentagon-to-hexagon transition. These findings provide physical insights into the structural evolvement of two-dimensional graphene allotropes and their effects on the mechanical properties.

Surface energies of AlN allotropes from first principles.

Project description:In this letter we present first-principles calculations of the surface energies of rock-salt (B1), zinc-blende (B3) and wurtzite (B4) AlN allotropes. Of several low-index facets, the highest energies are obtained for monoatomic surfaces (i.e. of only either Al or N atoms): [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The difference between Al- and N-terminated surfaces in these cases is less then 20 meV/Å2. The stoichiometric facets have energies lower by 100 meV/Å2 or more. The obtained trends could be rationalized by a simple nearest-neighbour broken-bond model.

Potential Explosion Hazard of Carbonaceous Nanoparticles: Screening of Allotropes.

Project description:There is a concern that engineered carbon nanoparticles, when manufactured on an industrial scale, will pose an explosion hazard. Explosion testing has been performed on 20 codes of carbonaceous powders. These include several different codes of SWCNTs (single-walled carbon nanotubes), MWCNTs (multi-walled carbon nanotubes) and CNFs (carbon nanofibers), graphene, diamond, fullerene, as well as several different control carbon blacks and graphites. Explosion screening was performed in a 20 L explosion chamber (ASTM E1226 protocol), at a concentration of 500 g/m3, using a 5 kJ ignition source. Time traces of overpressure were recorded. Samples typically exhibited overpressures of 5-7 bar, and deflagration index KSt = V1/3 (dP/dt)max ~ 10 - 80 bar-m/s, which places these materials in European Dust Explosion Class St-1. There is minimal variation between these different materials. The explosive characteristics of these carbonaceous powders are uncorrelated with primary particle size (BET specific surface area).

Hierarchically Structured Allotropes of Phosphorus from Data-Driven Exploration.

Project description:The discovery of materials is increasingly guided by quantum-mechanical crystal-structure prediction, but the structural complexity in bulk and nanoscale materials remains a bottleneck. Here we demonstrate how data-driven approaches can vastly accelerate the search for complex structures, combining a machine-learning (ML) model for the potential-energy surface with efficient, fragment-based searching. We use the characteristic building units observed in Hittorf's and fibrous phosphorus to seed stochastic ("random") structure searches over hundreds of thousands of runs. Our study identifies a family of hierarchically structured allotropes based on a P8 cage as principal building unit, including one-dimensional (1D) single and double helix structures, nanowires, and two-dimensional (2D) phosphorene allotropes with square-lattice and kagome topologies. These findings yield new insight into the intriguingly diverse structural chemistry of phosphorus, and they provide an example for how ML methods may, in the long run, be expected to accelerate the discovery of hierarchical nanostructures.
