Two cadmium coordination polymers with bridging acetate and phenyl-enedi-amine ligands that exhibit two-dimensional layered structures.

ABSTRACT: Poly[tetra-?₂-acetato-?⁸O:O'-bis-(?₂-benzene-1,2-di-amine-?²N:N')dicadmium], [Cd₂(CH₃COO)₄(C₆H₈N₂)₂] _n , (I), and poly[[(?₂-acetato-?²O:O')(acetato-?²O,O')(?₂-benzene-1,3-di-amine-?²N:N')cadmium] hemihydrate], {[Cd(CH₃COO)₂(C₆H₈N₂)]·0.5H₂O} _n , (II), have two-dimensional polymeric structures in which monomeric units are joined by bridging acetate and benzenedi-amine ligands. Each of the Cd^II ions has an O₄N₂ coordination environment. The coordination geometries of the symmetry-independent Cd^II ions are distorted octa-hedral and distorted trigonal anti-prismatic in (I) and distorted anti-prismatic in (II). Both compounds exhibit an intra-layer hydrogen-bonding network. In addition, the water of hydration in (II) is involved in inter-layer hydrogen bonding.

Two-Dimensional Anisotropic Flexibility of Mechanically Responsive Crystalline Cadmium(II) Coordination Polymers.

Project description:Crystals of a family of six one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers of cadmium(II) with cyanopyridines [[CdX2L2] n , where X = Cl, Br, or I and L = 3-cyanopyridine (3-CNpy) or 4-cyanopyridine (4-CNpy)] presented a variety of morphologies and mechanical responses with dominant two-dimensional (2D) anisotropic flexibility, which has not been previously reported. All mechanically adaptable crystals were 2D flexible and displayed a variety of direction-dependent responses; in addition to 2D isotropic flexibility observed for solely elastic materials, 2D anisotropic flexibility was noticed for both elastic and elastic → plastic crystals. The consequences of fine and controlled structural variations on mechanical behavior were additionally explored via microfocus single-crystal X-ray diffraction and complementary theoretical studies, revealing that the relative strength and direction of the hydrogen bonding interactions were the key parameters in delivering a specific mechanical response.

Tris(ethyl-enedi-amine)-cobalt(II) dichloride.

Project description:The title compound, [Co(II)(C2H8N2)3]Cl2, was obtained unexpectedly as the product of an attempted solvothermal synthesis of cobalt selenide from the elements in the presence of NH4Cl in ethyl-enedi-amine solvent. The three chelate rings of the distorted octa-hedral [Co(C2H8N2)3](2+) complex cation adopt twisted conformations about their C-C bonds. The spread of cis-N-Co-N bond angles [80.17 (6)-98.10 (6)°] in the title compound is considerably greater than the equivalent data for [Co(III)(C2H8N2)3]Cl3 [Takamizawa et al. (2008 ▶). Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 47, 1689-1692]. In the crystal, the components are linked by numerous N-H⋯Cl hydrogen bonds, generating a three-dimensional network in which the cationic complexes are stacked in columns along [010] and separated by columns of chloride anions.

Synthesis and crystal structure of a new coordination polymer based on lanthanum and 1,4-phenyl-enedi-acetate ligands.

Project description:Reaction in gel between the sodium salt of 1,4-phenyl-enedi-acetic acid (Na2C10O4H8-Na2 p-pda) and lanthanum chloride yields single crystals of the three-dimensional coordination polymer poly[[tetra-aqua-tris-(μ-1,4-phenyl-enedi-acetato)-dilanthanum(III)] octa-hydrate], {[La2(C10H8O4)3(H2O)4]·8H2O}∞. The LaIII coordination polyhedron can be described as a slightly distorted monocapped square anti-prism. One of the two p-pda2- ligands is bound to four LaIII ions and the other to two LaIII ions. Each LaIII atom is coordinated by five ligands, thereby generating a metal-organic framework with potential porosity properties.

Porous coordination polymers with ubiquitous and biocompatible metals and a neutral bridging ligand.

Project description:The design of inexpensive and less toxic porous coordination polymers (PCPs) that show selective adsorption or high adsorption capacity is a critical issue in research on applicable porous materials. Although use of Group II magnesium(II) and calcium(II) ions as building blocks could provide cheaper materials and lead to enhanced biocompatibility, examples of magnesium(II) and calcium(II) PCPs are extremely limited compared with commonly used transition metal ones, because neutral bridging ligands have not been available for magnesium(II) and calcium(II) ions. Here we report a rationally designed neutral and charge-polarized bridging ligand as a new partner for magnesium(II) and calcium(II) ions. The three-dimensional magnesium(II) and calcium(II) PCPs synthesized using such a neutral ligand are stable and show selective adsorption and separation of carbon dioxide over methane at ambient temperature. This synthetic approach allows the structural diversification of Group II magnesium(II) and calcium(II) PCPs.

Project description:The structure of the title polymeric compound, [Cd(SCN)2(C6H8N2)2] n , exhibits a two-dimensional staircase-like structure parallel to (010) in which the Cd(II) atom lies on a twofold rotation axis and has a distorted octa-hedral CdS2N4 geometry involving four ?-1,3-(SCN) group donors and two N-atom donors from 1,3-phenyl-enedi-amine ligands, which also have twofold symmetry. The major contributions to the cohesion and the stability of this two-dimensional polymeric structure are the covalent Cd-S,N bonds and one weak intra-layer N-H?S hydrogen bond.

Project description:Poly[tris-(acetato-?(2) O,O')(?2-acetato-?(3) O,O':O)tetra-kis-(?3-acetato-?(4) O,O':O:O')bis-(benzene-1,2-di-amine-?N)tetra-lead(II)], [Pb4(CH3COO)8(C6H8N2)2] n , (I), poly[(acetato-?(2) O,O')(?3-acetato-?(4) O,O':O:O')(4-chloro-benzene-1,2-diamine-?N)lead(II)], [Pb(CH3COO)2(C6H7ClN2)] n , (II), and poly[(?(2) O,O')(?3-acetato-?(4) O,O':O:O')(3,4-di-amino-benzo-nitrile-?N)lead(II)], [Pb(CH3COO)2(C7H7N3)] n , (III), have polymeric structures in which monomeric units are joined by bridging acetate ligands. All of the Pb(II) ions exhibit hemidirected coordination. The repeating unit in (I) is composed of four Pb(II) ions having O6, O6N, O7 and O6N coordination spheres, respectively, where N represents a monodentate benzene-1,2-di-amine ligand and O acetate O atoms. Chains along [010] are joined by bridging acetate ligands to form planes parallel to (10-1). (II) and (III) are isotypic and have one Pb(II) ion in the asymmetric unit that has an O6N coordination sphere. Pb2O2 units result from a symmetry-imposed inversion center. Polymeric chains parallel to [100] exhibit hydrogen bonding between the amine and acetate ligands. In (III), additional hydrogen bonds between cyano groups and non-coordinating amines join the chains by forming R 2 (2)(14) rings.

Coordination of two enhancers drives expression of olfactory trace amine-associated receptors III

Project description:Olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) are functionally defined by their expression of a unique odorant receptor (OR). Mechanisms underlying singular OR expression are well studied, and involve a massive cross-chromosomal enhancer interaction network. Trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs) form a distinct family of olfactory receptors, and here we find that mechanisms regulating Taar gene choice display many unique features. The epigenetic signature of Taar genes in TAAR OSNs is different from that in OR OSNs. We further identify that two TAAR enhancers conserved across placental mammals are absolutely required for expression of the entire Taar gene repertoire. Deletion of either enhancer dramatically decreases the expression probabilities of different Taar genes, while deletion of both enhancers completely eliminates the TAAR OSN populations. In addition, both of the enhancers are sufficient to drive transgene expression in the partially overlapped TAAR OSNs. We also show that the TAAR enhancers operate in cis to regulate Taar gene expression. Our findings reveal a coordinated control of Taar gene choice in OSNs by two remote enhancers, and provide an excellent model to study molecular mechanisms underlying formation of an olfactory subsystem.
