In human pathogens, the sulfate assimilation pathway provides reduced sulfur for biosynthesis of essential metabolites, including cysteine and low-molecular-weight thiol compounds. Sulfonucleotide reductases (SRs) catalyze the first committed step of sulfate reduction.
