Disseminated phaeohyphomycosis in a dog.

ABSTRACT: Phaeohyphomycosis is a rare but emerging disease caused by dematiaceous fungi. Here we describe the case of an immunosuppressed dog with disseminated phaeohyphomycosis secondary to Bipolaris spicifera infection. Regionally extensive infiltration of the paw pads, skin, myocardium, liver, renal interstitium and diaphragm was identified on histopathology. Candida glabrata and Fusarium oxysporum were also cultured from multiple sites post-mortem. The dog was treated with fluconazole, itraconazole, terbinafine and liposomal amphotericin B, but was euthanized due to its poor prognosis after 12 days of therapy.

Project description:A six-year-old domestic shorthair cat was presented for a subcutaneous digital nodular lesion on the right forelimb. On physical examination a similar lesion was identified on the right hindlimb. Disseminated cutaneous phaeohyphomycosis was diagnosed from histopathological changes in representative tissue biopsies and fungal culture. The isolate was identified by sequencing of ITS rDNA as Exophiala spinifera. This is the first report of disseminated cutaneous disease caused by E. spinifera in the cat.

Project description:Disseminated aspergillosis is uncommon in dogs and often associated with Aspergillus terreus. A case of disseminated disease in an English springer spaniel is reported from which Aspergillus alabamensis was recovered by culture and identified by molecular means suggesting a potential role for this agent as a primary pathogen of dogs.

Diagnosis and successful management of a rare case of phaeohyphomycosis in a Doberman pinscher dog.

Project description:Skin affections in canines are common and their treatment depends upon the pathogens involved. Delayed or no response to traditional treatment indicates the involvement of unusual etiology or the multidrug resistance. This report describes the diagnosis and therapeutic management of a rare case of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Alternaria alternata complicated with Pseudomonas aeruginosa associated pyoderma in a Doberman pinscher dog. Identification of the etiological agents was based on microscopy and culture of the skin lesions and further confirmation by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. Treatment consisted of a combination of systemic antifungal and antibacterial drugs selected on the basis of in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility tests along with the tropical therapy. The report hightlights the need of studies on opportunistic fungi to better understand the associated risks, pathogenesis and optimal treatment of these uncommon infections.

Disseminated Candidiasis in a Young, Previously Healthy, Dog and Review of Literature.

Project description:The reports on disseminated candidiasis in dogs so far describe at least one predisposing factor. This case report, however, highlights candidiasis in a dog without any known predisposition.A 1.5-year-old intact female Hovawart dog was presented with subcutaneous nodules and polyuria/polydipsia. An excisional biopsy revealed a chronic pyogranulomatous and necrotizing inflammation with mycotic structures. The patient became febrile and lethargic, and developed lameness.A physical examination, blood tests, urinalysis, thoracic radiographs, abdominal ultrasonography of the abdomen, fine-needle aspiration biopsies, and a culture of a subcutaneous nodule aspirate were obtained. Selected sections of multiple organs were collected for routine histology postmortem. The isolate and a subcutaneous mass were subjected to molecular identification and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) analysis.Clinical, laboratory, and radiological findings were consistent with a granulomatous chronic systemic inflammation. Cytology and histology showed a pyogranulomatous and necrotizing inflammation with myriads of intra- and extra-cellular yeasts and extracellular hyphae. Culture yielded numerous yeast colonies, which appeared Candida albicans-like, but showed a negative serum test and a low identification in API 20 C AUX. Nucleic acid sequences showed homology with the C. albicans-type strain CBS 562. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) resulted in a new type with designation DST121. The identification of the isolates was confirmed by MALDI-TOF-MS analysis.Future MLST typing and investigation of virulence can provide further evidence whether this MLST-type is associated with clinical cases of disseminated candidiasis without an apparent predisposing condition.

Disseminated Conidiobolus incongruus in a dog: A case report and literature review.

Project description:Conidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal disease of both humans and animals, occurring mainly in tropical and subtropical climates. We describe a disseminated fungal infection in a young, apparently immunocompetent dog who initially presented for antibiotic resistant pneumonia. Histopathology and mycology identified a Conidiobolus sp., further confirmed as Conidiobolus incongruus through DNA sequencing of D1/D2 regions. This is the first report of this species causing disease in dogs and the fifth reported infection in animals.

New filamentous fungus Sagenomella chlamydospora responsible for a disseminated infection in a dog.

Project description:A filamentous fungus that caused a fatal systemic infection in a dog has been identified as the new species Sagenomella chlamydospora. When the case was initially reported, the fungus was identified as Paecilomyces sp. This study emphasizes how difficult can be the identification of the causative agent of an infection when an uncommon microorganism is involved. This is the first time that this genus has been involved in animal infections, including humans.

Project description:Parathyridaria percutanea is an emerging fungus causing subcutaneous phaeohyphomycoses in renal transplant recipients in India. We identified P. percutanea from a patient with subcutaneous phaeohyphomycosis. From our culture collection, we identified the same fungus from 4 similar patients. We found 5 cases previously described in literature.
