Magnesium Ethylenediamine Borohydride as Solid-State Electrolyte for Magnesium Batteries.

ABSTRACT: Solid-state magnesium ion conductors with exceptionally high ionic conductivity at low temperatures, 5 × 10^-8 Scm^-1 at 30 °C and 6 × 10^-5 Scm^-1 at 70 °C, are prepared by mechanochemical reaction of magnesium borohydride and ethylenediamine. The coordination complexes are crystalline, support cycling in a potential window of 1.2 V, and allow magnesium plating/stripping. While the electrochemical stability, limited by the ethylenediamine ligand, must be improved to reach competitive energy densities, our results demonstrate that partially chelated Mg²⁺ complexes represent a promising platform for the development of an all-solid-state magnesium battery.

Methylamine Lithium Borohydride as Electrolyte for All-Solid-State Batteries.

Project description:Fast Li-ion conductivity at room temperature is a major challenge for utilization of all-solid-state Li batteries. Metal borohydrides with neutral ligands are a new emerging class of solid-state ionic conductors, and here we report the discovery of a new mono-methylamine lithium borohydride with very fast Li+ conductivity at room temperature. LiBH4 ⋅CH3 NH2 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21 /c, forming a two-dimensional unique layered structure. The layers are separated by hydrophobic -CH3 moieties, and contain large voids, allowing for fast Li-ionic conduction in the interlayers, σ(Li+ )=1.24×10-3 S cm-1 at room temperature. The electronic conductivity is negligible, and the electrochemical stability is ≈2.1 V vs Li. The first all-solid-state battery using a lithium borohydride with a neutral ligand as the electrolyte, Li-metal as the anode and TiS2 as the cathode is demonstrated.

Thin Solid Electrolyte Separators for Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Project description:The lithium-sulfur battery is one of the most promising "beyond Li-ion" battery chemistries owing to its superior gravimetric energy density and low cost. Nonetheless, its commercialization has been hindered by its low cycle life due to the polysulfide shuttle and nonuniform Li-metal plating and stripping. Thin and dense solid electrolyte separators could address these issues without compromising on energy density. Here, we introduce a novel argyrodite (Li6PS5Cl)-carboxylated nitrile butadiene rubber (XNBR) composite thin solid electrolyte separator (TSE) (<50 μm) processed by a scalable calendering technique and compatible with Li-metal. When integrated in a full cell with a commercial tape-cast sulfur cathode (3.54 mgS cm-2) in the presence of an in situ polymerized lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide-polydioxolane catholyte and a 100 μm Li-metal foil anode, we demonstrate stable cycling for 50 cycles under realistic operating conditions (stack pressure of <1 MPa and 30 °C).

High-Humidity-Tolerant Chloride Solid-State Electrolyte for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries.

Project description:Halide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) hold promise for the commercialization of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs); however, the currently cost-effective zirconium-based chloride SSEs suffer from hygroscopic irreversibility, low ionic conductivity, and inadequate thermal stability. Herein, a novel indium-doped zirconium-based chloride is fabricated to satisfy the abovementioned requirements, achieving outstanding-performance ASSLBs at room temperature. Compared to the conventional Li2ZrCl6 and Li3InCl6 SSEs, the hc-Li2+xZr1-xInxCl6 (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 1) possesses higher ionic conductivity (up to 1.4 mS cm-1), and thermal stability (350 °C). At the same time, the hc-Li2.8Zr0.2In0.8Cl6 also shows obvious hygroscopic reversibility, where its recovery rate of the ionic conductivity is up to 82.5% after 24-h exposure in the 5% relative humidity followed by heat treatment. Theoretical calculation and experimental results reveal that those advantages are derived from the lattice expansion and the formation of Li3InCl6 ·2H2O hydrates, which can effectively reduce the migration energy barrier of Li ions and offer reversible hydration/dehydration pathway. Finally, an ASSLB, assembled with reheated-Li2.8Zr0.2In0.8Cl6 after humidity exposure, single-crystal LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 and Li-In alloy, exhibits capacity retention of 71% after 500 cycles under 1 C at 25 °C. This novel high-humidity-tolerant chloride electrolyte is expected to greatly carry forward the ASSLBs industrialization.

Highly efficient & stable Bi & Sb anodes using lithium borohydride as solid electrolyte in Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Herein, we employed Bi and Sb as the negative electrode in all solid-state lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) using LiBH4 as the solid-state electrolyte. The composite anode materials with acetylene black (AB) and LiBH4, prepared by high energy ball-milling, have shown extremely high stability with a high coulombic efficiency of 90-99% over a number of cycles. The gravimetric capacity decayed by only 18 and 5% as compared to the initial volumetric capacity of 4681.7 and 4393.4 mA h cm-3 for Bi and Sb anodes respectively.

Effect of solid-electrolyte pellet density on failure of solid-state batteries.

Project description:Despite the potentially higher energy density and improved safety of solid-state batteries (SSBs) relative to Li-ion batteries, failure due to Li-filament penetration of the solid electrolyte and subsequent short circuit remains a critical issue. Herein, we show that Li-filament growth is suppressed in solid-electrolyte pellets with a relative density beyond ~95%. Below this threshold value, however, the battery shorts more easily as the density increases due to faster Li-filament growth within the percolating pores in the pellet. The microstructural properties (e.g., pore size, connectivity, porosity, and tortuosity) of [Formula: see text] with various relative densities are quantified using focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy tomography and permeability tests. Furthermore, modeling results provide details on the Li-filament growth inside pores ranging from 0.2 to 2 μm in size. Our findings improve the understanding of the failure modes of SSBs and provide guidelines for the design of dendrite-free SSBs.

Dynamics of porous and amorphous magnesium borohydride to understand solid state Mg-ion-conductors.

Project description:Rechargeable solid-state magnesium batteries are considered for high energy density storage and usage in mobile applications as well as to store energy from intermittent energy sources, triggering intense research for suitable electrode and electrolyte materials. Recently, magnesium borohydride, Mg(BH4)2, was found to be an effective precursor for solid-state Mg-ion conductors. During the mechanochemical synthesis of these Mg-ion conductors, amorphous Mg(BH4)2 is typically formed and it was postulated that this amorphous phase promotes the conductivity. Here, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of as-received γ-Mg(BH4)2 and ball milled, amorphous Mg(BH4)2 confirmed that the conductivity of the latter is ~2 orders of magnitude higher than in as-received γ-Mg(BH4)2 at 353 K. Pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of the local structure shows striking similarities up to a length scale of 5.1 Å, suggesting similar conduction pathways in both the crystalline and amorphous sample. Up to 12.27 Å the PDF indicates that a 3D net of interpenetrating channels might still be present in the amorphous phase although less ordered compared to the as-received γ-phase. However, quasi elastic neutron scattering experiments (QENS) were used to study the rotational mobility of the [BH4] units, revealing a much larger fraction of activated [BH4] rotations in amorphous Mg(BH4)2. These findings suggest that the conduction process in amorphous Mg(BH4)2 is supported by stronger rotational mobility, which is proposed to be the so-called "paddle-wheel" mechanism.

Nonflammable quasi-solid-state electrolyte for stable lithium-metal batteries.

Project description:Rechargeable lithium batteries with high-voltage/capacity cathodes are regarded as promising high-energy-density energy-storage systems. Nevertheless, these systems are restricted by some critical challenges, such as flammable electrolyte, lithium dendrite formation and rapid capacity fade at high voltage and elevated temperature. In this work, we report a quasi-solid-state composite electrolyte (QCE) prepared by in situ polymerization reactions. The electrolyte consists of polymer matrix, inorganic filler, nonflammable plasticizers and Li salt, and shows a good thermal stability, a moderate ionic conductivity of 2.8 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C, and a wide electrochemical window up to 6.7 V. The batteries with the QCE show good electrochemical performance when coupled with lithium metal anode and LiCoO2 or LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 cathodes. Pouch-type batteries with the QCE also exhibit stable cycling, and can tolerate abuse testes such as folding, cutting and nail penetration. The in situ formed fluorides and phosphides from the plasticizers stabilize the interfaces between the QCE and electrodes, which enables stable cycling of Li metal batteries.

Solid-State Li-Ion Batteries Operating at Room Temperature Using New Borohydride Argyrodite Electrolytes.

Project description:Using a new class of (BH4)- substituted argyrodite Li6PS5Z0.83(BH4)0.17, (Z = Cl, I) solid electrolyte, Li-metal solid-state batteries operating at room temperature have been developed. The cells were made by combining the modified argyrodite with an In-Li anode and two types of cathode: an oxide, LixMO2 (M = ⅓ Ni, ⅓ Mn, ⅓ Co; so called NMC) and a titanium disulfide, TiS2. The performance of the cells was evaluated through galvanostatic cycling and Alternating Current AC electrochemical impedance measurements. Reversible capacities were observed for both cathodes for at least tens of cycles. However, the high-voltage oxide cathode cell shows lower reversible capacity and larger fading upon cycling than the sulfide one. The AC impedance measurements revealed an increasing interfacial resistance at the cathode side for the oxide cathode inducing the capacity fading. This resistance was attributed to the intrinsic poor conductivity of NMC and interfacial reactions between the oxide material and the argyrodite electrolyte. On the contrary, the low interfacial resistance of the TiS2 cell during cycling evidences a better chemical compatibility between this active material and substituted argyrodites, allowing full cycling of the cathode material, 240 mAhg-1, for at least 35 cycles with a coulombic efficiency above 97%.

Uniform and Anisotropic Solid Electrolyte Membrane Enables Superior Solid-State Li Metal Batteries.

Project description:Rational structure design is a successful approach to develop high-performance composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) for solid-state Li metal batteries. Herein, a novel CSE membrane is proposed, that consists of interwoven garnet/polyethylene oxide-Li bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide (LLZO/PEO-LiTFSI) microfibers. This CSE exhibits high Li-ion conductivity and exceptional Li dendrite suppression capability, which can be attributed to the uniform LLZO dispersion in PEO-LiTFSI and the vertical/horizontal anisotropic Li-ion conduction in the CSE. The uniform LLZO particles can generate large interaction regions between LLZO and PEO-LiTFSI, which thus form continuous Li-ion transfer pathways, retard the interfacial side reactions and strengthen the deformation resistance. More importantly, the anisotropic Li-ion conduction, that is, Li-ion transfers much faster along the microfibers than across the microfibers, can effectively homogenize the electric field distribution in the CSE during cycling, which thus prevents the excessive concentration of Li-ion flux. Finally, solid-state Li||LiFePO4 cells based on this CSE show excellent electrochemical performances. This work enriches the structure design strategy of high-performance CSEs and may be helpful for further pushing the solid-state Li metal batteries towards practical applications.

Evaluating Electrolyte-Anode Interface Stability in Sodium All-Solid-State Batteries.

Project description:All-solid-state batteries have recently gained considerable attention due to their potential improvements in safety, energy density, and cycle-life compared to conventional liquid electrolyte batteries. Sodium all-solid-state batteries also offer the potential to eliminate costly materials containing lithium, nickel, and cobalt, making them ideal for emerging grid energy storage applications. However, significant work is required to understand the persisting limitations and long-term cyclability of Na all-solid-state-based batteries. In this work, we demonstrate the importance of careful solid electrolyte selection for use against an alloy anode in Na all-solid-state batteries. Three emerging solid electrolyte material classes were chosen for this study: the chloride Na2.25Y0.25Zr0.75Cl6, sulfide Na3PS4, and borohydride Na2(B10H10)0.5(B12H12)0.5. Focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM) imaging, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were utilized to characterize the evolution of the anode-electrolyte interface upon electrochemical cycling. The obtained results revealed that the interface stability is determined by both the intrinsic electrochemical stability of the solid electrolyte and the passivating properties of the formed interfacial products. With appropriate material selection for stability at the respective anode and cathode interfaces, stable cycling performance can be achieved for Na all-solid-state batteries.
