Reversible integer wavelet transform for blind image hiding method.

ABSTRACT: In this article, a blind data hiding reversible methodology to embed the secret data for hiding purpose into cover image is proposed. The key advantage of this research work is to resolve the privacy and secrecy issues raised during the data transmission over the internet. Firstly, data is decomposed into sub-bands using the integer wavelets. For decomposition, the Fresnelet transform is utilized which encrypts the secret data by choosing a unique key parameter to construct a dummy pattern. The dummy pattern is then embedded into an approximated sub-band of the cover image. Our proposed method reveals high-capacity and great imperceptibility of the secret embedded data. With the utilization of family of integer wavelets, the proposed novel approach becomes more efficient for hiding and retrieving process. It retrieved the secret hidden data from the embedded data blindly, without the requirement of original cover image.

Hybrid Adaptive Lossless Image Compression Based on Discrete Wavelet Transform.

Project description:A new hybrid transform for lossless image compression exploiting a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and prediction is the main new contribution of this paper. Simple prediction is generally considered ineffective in conjunction with DWT but we applied it to subbands of DWT modified using reversible denoising and lifting steps (RDLSs) with step skipping. The new transform was constructed in an image-adaptive way using heuristics and entropy estimation. For a large and diverse test set consisting of 499 photographic and 247 non-photographic (screen content) images, we found that RDLS with step skipping allowed effectively combining DWT with prediction. Using prediction, we nearly doubled the JPEG 2000 compression ratio improvements that could be obtained using RDLS with step skipping. Because for some images it might be better to apply prediction instead of DWT, we proposed compression schemes with various tradeoffs, which are practical contributions of this study. Compared with unmodified JPEG 2000, one scheme improved the compression ratios of photographic and non-photographic images, on average, by 1.2% and 30.9%, respectively, at the cost of increasing the compression time by 2% and introducing only minimal modifications to JPEG 2000. Greater ratio improvements, exceeding 2% and 32%, respectively, are attainable at a greater cost.

A simple method for predicting transmembrane proteins based on wavelet transform.

Project description:The increasing protein sequences from the genome project require theoretical methods to predict transmembrane helical segments (TMHs). So far, several prediction methods have been reported, but there are some deficiencies in prediction accuracy and adaptability in these methods. In this paper, a method based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has been developed to predict the number and location of TMHs in membrane proteins. PDB coded as 1KQG is chosen as an example to describe the prediction process by this method. 80 proteins with known 3D structure from Mptopo database are chosen at random as data sets (including 325 TMHs) and 80 sequences are divided into 13 groups according to their function and type. TMHs prediction is carried out for each group of membrane protein sequences and obtain satisfactory result. To verify the feasibility of this method, 80 membrane protein sequences are treated as test sets, 308 TMHs can be predicted and the prediction accuracy is 96.3%. Compared with the main prediction results of seven popular prediction methods, the obtained results indicate that the proposed method in this paper has higher prediction accuracy.

Separable and error-free reversible data hiding in encrypted image with high payload.

Project description:This paper proposes a separable reversible data-hiding scheme in encrypted image which offers high payload and error-free data extraction. The cover image is partitioned into nonoverlapping blocks and multigranularity encryption is applied to obtain the encrypted image. The data hider preprocesses the encrypted image and randomly selects two basic pixels in each block to estimate the block smoothness and indicate peak points. Additional data are embedded into blocks in the sorted order of block smoothness by using local histogram shifting under the guidance of the peak points. At the receiver side, image decryption and data extraction are separable and can be free to choose. Compared to previous approaches, the proposed method is simpler in calculation while offering better performance: larger payload, better embedding quality, and error-free data extraction, as well as image recovery.

Cement pavement void detection algorithm based on GPR signal and continuous wavelet transform method.

Project description:The dimension of the void area in pavement is crucial to its structural safety. However, there is no effective method to measure its geometric parameters. To address this issue, a void size extraction algorithm based on the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) method was proposed using ground-penetrating radar (GPR) signal. Firstly, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method was used to investigate the GPR response of void areas with different shapes, sizes, and depths. Next, the GPR signal was processed using the CWT method, and a 3D image based on the CWT result was used to visualize the void area. Based on the differences between the void and normal pavement in the time and frequency domains, the signal with maximum energy from the CWT time-frequency result was extracted and combined to reconstruct the new B-scan image, where void areas have energy concentration phenomenon. Based on this, width and depth of void detection algorithm was proposed to recognize the void area. Finally, the detection algorithm was verified both in numerical model and physical lab model. The results indicated that the CWT time-frequency energy spectrum can be used to enhance the void feature, and the 3D CWT image can clearly visualize the void area with a highlighted energy area. After fully testing and validating in numerical and lab models, our proposed method achieved high accuracy in void width and depth detection, providing a precise method for estimating void dimension in pavement. This method can guide DOT departments to carry out pre-maintenance, thereby ensuring pavement safety.

Prediction of hot spots in protein-DNA binding interfaces based on discrete wavelet transform and wavelet packet transform.

Project description:BackgroundIdentification of hot spots in protein-DNA binding interfaces is extremely important for understanding the underlying mechanisms of protein-DNA interactions and drug design. Since experimental methods for identifying hot spots are time-consuming and expensive, and most of the existing computational methods are based on traditional protein-DNA features to predict hot spots, unable to make full use of the effective information in the features.ResultsIn this work, a method named WTL-PDH is proposed for hot spots prediction. To deal with the unbalanced dataset, we used the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique to generate minority class samples to achieve the balance of dataset. First, we extracted the solvent accessible surface area features and structural features, and then processed the traditional features using discrete wavelet transform and wavelet packet transform to extract the wavelet energy information and wavelet entropy information, and obtained a total of 175 dimensional features. In order to obtain the best feature subset, we systematically evaluate these features in various feature selection strategies. Finally, light gradient boosting machine (LightGBM) was used to establish the model.ConclusionsOur method achieved good results on independent test set with AUC, MCC and F1 scores of 0.838, 0.533 and 0.750, respectively. WTL-PDH can achieve generally better performance in predicting hot spots when compared with state-of-the-art methods. A Hybrid Method Based on Extreme Learning Machine and Wavelet Transform Denoising for Stock Prediction.

Project description:The trend prediction of the stock is a main challenge. Accidental factors often lead to short-term sharp fluctuations in stock markets, deviating from the original normal trend. The short-term fluctuation of stock price has high noise, which is not conducive to the prediction of stock trends. Therefore, we used discrete wavelet transform (DWT)-based denoising to denoise stock data. Denoising the stock data assisted us to eliminate the influences of short-term random events on the continuous trend of the stock. The denoised data showed more stable trend characteristics and smoothness. Extreme learning machine (ELM) is one of the effective training algorithms for fully connected single-hidden-layer feedforward neural networks (SLFNs), which possesses the advantages of fast convergence, unique results, and it does not converge to a local minimum. Therefore, this paper proposed a combination of ELM- and DWT-based denoising to predict the trend of stocks. The proposed method was used to predict the trend of 400 stocks in China. The prediction results of the proposed method are a good proof of the efficacy of DWT-based denoising for stock trends, and showed an excellent performance compared to 12 machine learning algorithms (e.g., recurrent neural network (RNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM)).

Novel feature extraction method for signal analysis based on independent component analysis and wavelet transform.

Project description:Feature extraction is an important part of data processing that provides a basis for more complicated tasks such as classification or clustering. Recently many approaches for signal feature extraction were created. However, plenty of proposed methods are based on convolutional neural networks. This class of models requires a high amount of computational power to train and deploy and large dataset. Our work introduces a novel feature extraction method that uses wavelet transform to provide additional information in the Independent Component Analysis mixing matrix. The goal of our work is to combine good performance with a low inference cost. We used the task of Electrocardiography (ECG) heartbeat classification to evaluate the usefulness of the proposed approach. Experiments were carried out with an MIT-BIH database with four target classes (Normal, Vestibular ectopic beats, Ventricular ectopic beats, and Fusion strikes). Several base wavelet functions with different classifiers were used in experiments. Best was selected with 5-fold cross-validation and Wilcoxon test with significance level 0.05. With the proposed method for feature extraction and multi-layer perceptron classifier, we obtained 95.81% BAC-score. Compared to other literature methods, our approach was better than most feature extraction methods except for convolutional neural networks. Further analysis indicates that our method performance is close to convolutional neural networks for classes with a limited number of learning examples. We also analyze the number of required operations at test time and argue that our method enables easy deployment in environments with limited computing power.

Prediction of Drug-Target Interactions by Combining Dual-Tree Complex Wavelet Transform with Ensemble Learning Method.

Project description:Identification of drug-target interactions (DTIs) is vital for drug discovery. However, traditional biological approaches have some unavoidable shortcomings, such as being time consuming and expensive. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop novel and effective computational methods to predict DTIs in order to shorten the development cycles of new drugs. In this study, we present a novel computational approach to identify DTIs, which uses protein sequence information and the dual-tree complex wavelet transform (DTCWT). More specifically, a position-specific scoring matrix (PSSM) was performed on the target protein sequence to obtain its evolutionary information. Then, DTCWT was used to extract representative features from the PSSM, which were then combined with the drug fingerprint features to form the feature descriptors. Finally, these descriptors were sent to the Rotation Forest (RoF) model for classification. A 5-fold cross validation (CV) was adopted on four datasets (Enzyme, Ion Channel, GPCRs (G-protein-coupled receptors), and NRs (Nuclear Receptors)) to validate the proposed model; our method yielded high average accuracies of 89.21%, 85.49%, 81.02%, and 74.44%, respectively. To further verify the performance of our model, we compared the RoF classifier with two state-of-the-art algorithms: the support vector machine (SVM) and the k-nearest neighbor (KNN) classifier. We also compared it with some other published methods. Moreover, the prediction results for the independent dataset further indicated that our method is effective for predicting potential DTIs. Thus, we believe that our method is suitable for facilitating drug discovery and development.

Application of wavelet transform for PDZ domain classification.

Project description:PDZ domains have been identified as part of an array of signaling proteins that are often unrelated, except for the well-conserved structural PDZ domain they contain. These domains have been linked to many disease processes including common Avian influenza, as well as very rare conditions such as Fraser and Usher syndromes. Historically, based on the interactions and the nature of bonds they form, PDZ domains have most often been classified into one of three classes (class I, class II and others - class III), that is directly dependent on their binding partner. In this study, we report on three unique feature extraction approaches based on the bigram and trigram occurrence and existence rearrangements within the domain's primary amino acid sequences in assisting PDZ domain classification. Wavelet packet transform (WPT) and Shannon entropy denoted by wavelet entropy (WE) feature extraction methods were proposed. Using 115 unique human and mouse PDZ domains, the existence rearrangement approach yielded a high recognition rate (78.34%), which outperformed our occurrence rearrangements based method. The recognition rate was (81.41%) with validation technique. The method reported for PDZ domain classification from primary sequences proved to be an encouraging approach for obtaining consistent classification results. We anticipate that by increasing the database size, we can further improve feature extraction and correct classification.

Short Exon Detection via Wavelet Transform Modulus Maxima.

Project description:The detection of short exons is a challenging open problem in the field of bioinformatics. Due to the fact that the weakness of existing model-independent methods lies in their inability to reliably detect small exons, a model-independent method based on the singularity detection with wavelet transform modulus maxima has been developed for detecting short coding sequences (exons) in eukaryotic DNA sequences. In the analysis of our method, the local maxima can capture and characterize singularities of short exons, which helps to yield significant patterns that are rarely observed with the traditional methods. In order to get some information about singularities on the differences between the exon signal and the background noise, the noise level is estimated by filtering the genomic sequence through a notch filter. Meanwhile, a fast method based on a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial is applied to reconstruct the wavelet coefficients for improving the computational efficiency. In addition, the output measure of a paired-numerical representation calculated in both forward and reverse directions is used to incorporate a useful DNA structural property. The performances of our approach and other techniques are evaluated on two benchmark data sets. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms all assessed model-independent methods for detecting short exons in terms of evaluation metrics.
