1.2 million kids and counting-Mobile science laboratories drive student interest in STEM.

ABSTRACT: In today's increasingly technological society, a workforce proficient in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) skills is essential. Research has shown that active engagement by K-12 students in hands-on science activities that use authentic science tools promotes student learning and retention. Mobile laboratory programs provide this type of learning in schools and communities across the United States and internationally. Many programs are members of the Mobile Lab Coalition (MLC), a nonprofit organization of mobile and other laboratory-based education programs built on scientist and educator collaborations. A recent survey of the member programs revealed that they provide an impressive variety of programming and have collectively served over 1.2 million students across the US.

Engaging Rural Appalachian High School Girls in College Science Laboratories to Foster STEM-Related Career Interest.

Project description:Setting students on a path to success in careers in science is a challenge in poor rural Appalachian public schools. Students face many socioeconomic obstacles. Their teachers are also limited by many factors including inadequate facilities, under-funding, geographical isolation of the schools, and state-testing constraints. Additionally, students and teachers lack the availability of outside science educational opportunities. In an effort to address this situation, 24 academically strong high school junior girls and their teachers from the Carter County School System in rural east Tennessee were invited for a laboratory day at Milligan College, a small liberal arts college in the heart of the county. Science faculty, female science majors, and admissions staff volunteered in service to the project. The event included three laboratory sessions, lunch in the college cafeteria, and campus tours. This successful example, as evidenced by positive evaluations by the invited girls and their teachers, of educational outreach by a local, small liberal arts college to a rural county school system provides a model for establishing a relationship between higher education institutions and these underprivileged schools, with the intention of drawing more of these poor, rural Appalachian students, particularly girls, into a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) career path. Minimotif Miner 4: a million peptide minimotifs and counting.

Project description:Minimotif Miner (MnM) is a database and web system for analyzing short functional peptide motifs, termed minimotifs. We present an update to MnM growing the database from ∼300 000 to >1 000 000 minimotif consensus sequences and instances. This growth comes largely from updating data from existing databases and annotation of articles with high-throughput approaches analyzing different types of post-translational modifications. Another update is mapping human proteins and their minimotifs to know human variants from the dbSNP, build 150. Now MnM 4 can be used to generate mechanistic hypotheses about how human genetic variation affect minimotifs and outcomes. One example of the utility of the combined minimotif/SNP tool identifies a loss of function missense SNP in a ubiquitylation minimotif encoded in the excision repair cross-complementing 2 (ERCC2) nucleotide excision repair gene. This SNP reaches genome wide significance for many types of cancer and the variant identified with MnM 4 reveals a more detailed mechanistic hypothesis concerning the role of ERCC2 in cancer. Highlighting Prosocial Affordances of Science in Textbooks to Promote Science Interest.

Project description:The prevalent stereotype that scientific fields do not afford opportunities to fulfill goals of helping others deters student interest and participation in science. We investigated whether introductory college science textbooks that highlight the prosocial utility value of science can be used to change beliefs about the affordances of scientific work. In study 1, undergraduate students who were randomly assigned to read a science textbook chapter with added prosocial utility value expressed greater beliefs that the science topic afforded prosocial goals and increased interest in the scientific topic, compared with two control conditions. Mediation analysis demonstrated that interest was enhanced through increased beliefs that the topic afforded prosocial opportunities. Multiple group comparison tests indicated that underrepresented minority students (i.e., African Americans, Latinos, and Native Americans) might benefit the most from efforts to strengthen prosocial affordance beliefs. In study 2, we conducted a brief landscape analysis of science textbooks and found that texts are missing opportunities to emphasize the prosocial utility value of science. We discuss recommendations for science educators, curriculum designers, and researchers who want to increase and broaden science participation.

Interactive youth science workshops benefit student participants and graduate student mentors.

Project description:Science communication and outreach are essential for training the next generation of scientists and raising public awareness for science. Providing effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educational outreach to students in classrooms is challenging because of the need to form partnerships with teachers, the time commitment required for the presenting scientist, and the limited class time allotted for presentations. In our Present Your Ph.D. Thesis to a 12-Year Old outreach project, our novel solution to this problem is hosting a youth science workshop (YSW) on our university campus. The YSW is an interpersonal science communication and outreach experience in which graduate students from diverse scientific disciplines introduce middle and high school students to their cutting-edge research and mentor them to develop a white-board presentation to communicate the research to the workshop audience. Our assessment of the YSW indicated that participating young students expressed significantly more positive attitudes toward science and increased motivation to work in a STEM career after attending the workshop. Qualitative follow-up interviews with participating graduate students' show that even with minimal time commitment, an impactful science communication training experience can be achieved. The YSW is a low-cost, high-reward educational outreach event amenable to all disciplines of science. It enhances interest and support of basic science research while providing opportunities for graduate students to engage with the public, improve their science communication skills, and enhance public understanding of science. This YSW model can be easily implemented at other higher education institutions to globally enhance science outreach initiatives.

Gross domestic product, science interest, and science achievement: a person × nation interaction.

Project description:Maximizing science achievement is a critical target of educational policy and has important implications for national and international economic and technological competitiveness. Previous research has identified both science interest and socioeconomic status (SES) as robust predictors of science achievement, but little research has examined their joint effects. In a data set drawn from approximately 400,000 high school students from 57 countries, we documented large Science Interest × SES and Science Interest × Per Capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) interactions in the prediction of science achievement. Student interest in science is a substantially stronger predictor of science achievement in higher socioeconomic contexts and in higher-GDP nations. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that in higher-opportunity contexts, motivational factors play larger roles in learning and achievement. They add to the growing body of evidence indicating that substantial cross-national differences in psychological effect sizes are not simply a logical possibility but, in many cases, an empirical reality.

Medical student awareness of and interest in clinical informatics.

Project description:ObjectiveWe aimed to investigate medical students' attitudes about Clinical Informatics (CI) training and careers.Materials and methodsWe distributed a web-based survey to students at four US allopathic medical schools.ResultsFive hundred and fifty-seven medical students responded. Interest in CI training opportunities (medical school electives, residency electives, or academic fellowships) surpassed respondents' prior awareness of these opportunities. Thirty percent of student respondents expressed at least some interest in a CI-related career, but they were no more aware of training opportunities than their peers who did not express such an interest.DiscussionAlmost one third of medical students who responded to our survey expressed an interest in a CI-related career, but they were generally unaware of CI training and mentoring opportunities available to them. Early outreach to such medical students, through elective classes, professional society incentives, or expert partnerships, may positively influence the size and skill set of the future CI workforce.ConclusionWe should work as a field to increase the quantity, quality, and publicity of CI learning opportunities for interested medical students.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in 1.2 million children: longitudinal cohort study of risk factors.

Project description:BackgroundWe identified patient characteristics associated with an increased risk of developing MIS-C.MethodsWe conducted a longitudinal cohort study of 1,195,327 patients aged 0-19 years between 2006 and 2021, including the first two waves of the pandemic (February 25-August 22, 2020 and August 23, 2020-March 31, 2021). Exposures included prepandemic morbidity, birth outcomes, and family history of maternal disorders. Outcomes included MIS-C, Kawasaki disease, and other Covid-19 complications during the pandemic. We calculated risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between patient exposures and these outcomes using log-binomial regression models adjusted for potential confounders.ResultsAmong 1,195,327 children, 84 developed MIS-C, 107 Kawasaki disease, and 330 other Covid-19 complications during the first year of the pandemic. Prepandemic hospitalizations for metabolic disorders (RR 11.3, 95% CI 5.61-22.6), atopic conditions (RR 3.34, 95% CI 1.60-6.97), and cancer (RR 8.11, 95% CI 1.13-58.3) were strongly associated with the risk of MIS-C, compared with no exposure. These same exposures were also associated with Kawasaki disease and other Covid-19 complications. However, birth characteristics and history of maternal morbidity were not associated with MIS-C development.ConclusionsChildren with pre-existing morbidity have a considerably elevated risk of MIS-C.ImpactMorbidities that predispose children to multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) are unclear. In this study, prepandemic hospitalizations for metabolic disorders, atopic conditions, and cancer were associated with an elevated risk of MIS-C. Birth characteristics and family history of maternal morbidity were not, however, associated with MIS-C. Pediatric morbidities may play a greater role in MIS-C onset than maternal or perinatal characteristics, and may help clinicians better recognize children at risk for this complication.

Bi-ancestral depression GWAS in the Million Veteran Program and meta-analysis in >1.2 million individuals highlight new therapeutic directions.

Project description:Major depressive disorder is the most common neuropsychiatric disorder, affecting 11% of veterans. Here we report results of a large meta-analysis of depression using data from the Million Veteran Program, 23andMe, UK Biobank and FinnGen, including individuals of European ancestry (n = 1,154,267; 340,591 cases) and African ancestry (n = 59,600; 25,843 cases). Transcriptome-wide association study analyses revealed significant associations with expression of NEGR1 in the hypothalamus and DRD2 in the nucleus accumbens, among others. We fine-mapped 178 genomic risk loci, and we identified likely pathogenicity in these variants and overlapping gene expression for 17 genes from our transcriptome-wide association study, including TRAF3. Finally, we were able to show substantial replications of our findings in a large independent cohort (n = 1,342,778) provided by 23andMe. This study sheds light on the genetic architecture of depression and provides new insight into the interrelatedness of complex psychiatric traits.

Perceived conflict of interest in health science partnerships.

Project description:University scientists conducting research on topics of potential health concern often want to partner with a range of actors, including government entities, non-governmental organizations, and private enterprises. Such partnerships can provide access to needed resources, including funding. However, those who observe the results of such partnerships may judge those results based on who is involved. This set of studies seeks to assess how people perceive two hypothetical health science research collaborations. In doing so, it also tests the utility of using procedural justice concepts to assess perceptions of research legitimacy as a theoretical way to investigate conflict of interest perceptions. Findings show that including an industry collaborator has clear negative repercussions for how people see a research partnership and that these perceptions shape people's willingness to see the research as a legitimate source of knowledge. Additional research aimed at further communicating procedures that might mitigate the impact of industry collaboration is suggested.
