Pd^II₂L₄-type coordination cages up to three nanometers in size.

ABSTRACT: The utilization of large ligands in coordination-based self-assembly represents an attractive strategy for the construction of supramolecular assemblies more than two nanometers in size. However, the implementation of this strategy is hampered by the fact that the preparation of such ligands often requires substantial synthetic effort. Herein, we describe a simple one-step protocol, which allows large bipyridyl ligands with a bent shape to be synthesized from easily accessible and/or commercially available starting materials. The ligands were used to construct Pd^II₂L₄-type coordination cages of unprecedented size. Furthermore, we provide evidence that these cages may be stabilized by close intramolecular packing of lipophilic ligand side chains. Packing effects of this kind are frequently encountered in protein assemblies, but they are seldom used as a design element in metallasupramolecular chemistry.

Tunable Fullerene Affinity of Cages, Bowls and Rings Assembled by PdII Coordination Sphere Engineering.

Project description:For metal-mediated host compounds, the development of strategies to reduce symmetry and introduce multiple functionalities in a non-statistical way is a challenging task. We show that the introduction of steric stress around the coordination environment of square-planar PdII cations and bis-monodentate nitrogen donor ligands allows to control the size and shape of the assembled product, from [Pd2 L4 ] cages over [Pd2 L3 ] bowl-shaped structures to [Pd2 L2 ] rings. Therefore, banana-shaped ligand backbones were equipped with pyridines, two different quinoline isomers and acridine, the latter three introducing steric congestion through hydrogen substituents on annelated benzene rings. Differing behavior of the four resulting hosts towards the binding of C60 and C70 fullerenes was studied and related to structural differences by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The three cages based on pyridine, 6-quinoline or 3-quinoline donors were found to either bind C60 , C70 or no fullerene at all.

Guest-Modulated Circularly Polarized Luminescence by Ligand-to-Ligand Chirality Transfer in Heteroleptic PdII Coordination Cages.

Project description:Multicomponent metallo-supramolecular assembly allows the rational combination of different building blocks. Discrete multifunctional hosts with an accessible cavity can be prepared in a non-statistical fashion. We employ our shape-complementary assembly (SCA) method to achieve for the first time integrative self-sorting of heteroleptic PdII cages showing guest-tunable circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). An enantiopure helicene-based ligand (M or P configuration) is coupled with a non-chiral emissive fluorenone-based ligand (A or B) to form a series of Pd2 L2 L'2 assemblies. The modular strategy allows to impart the chiral information of the helicenes to the overall supramolecular system, resulting in CPL from the non-chiral component. Guest binding results in a 4-fold increase of CPL intensity. The principle offers potential to generate libraries of multifunctional materials with applications in molecular recognition, enantioselective photo-redox catalysis and information processing.

Cooperativity of steric bulk and H-bonding in coordination sphere engineering: heteroleptic PdII cages and bowls by design.

Project description:Recently developed self-assembly strategies allow to rationally reduce the symmetry of metallosupramolecular architectures. In addition, the combination of multiple ligand types without creating compound mixtures has become possible. Among several approaches to realize non-statistical heteroleptic assembly, Coordination Sphere Engineering (CSE) makes use of secondary repulsive or attractive interactions in direct vicinity of the metal nodes. Previously, we used steric congestion to turn dinuclear [Pd2L4] cages with fourfold symmetry into [Pd2L3X2] (X = solvent, halide) bowl structures. Here, we introduce a new subtype of this strategy based on balancing hydrogen bonding and repulsive interactions between ligands carrying quinoline (LQu) and 1,8-naphthyridine (LNa) donors to generate trans-[Pd2L2] and [Pd2L3L'] cages, assisted by templation of encapsulated fullerenes. Combined with steric congestion caused by acridine (LAc) donors, we further report the first example of a heteroleptic [Pd2L2L'X2] bowl. Formation, structure and fullerene binding ability of these metallo-supramolecular hosts were studied by NMR, mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction.

Phosphorescent PdII-PdII Emitter-Based Red OLEDs with an EQEmax of 20.52.

Project description:Three dinuclear Pd(II) complexes (1, 2, and 3) with intense red phosphorescence at room temperature are here synthesized using strong ligand field strength compounds. All three complexes are characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance, high-resolution mass spectrometry, and elemental analyses. Complexes 2 and 3 are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystalline data of 2 and 3 reveal complex double-layer structures, with Pd-Pd distances of 2.8690(9) Å and 2.8584(17) Å, respectively. Furthermore, complexes 1, 2, and 3 show phosphorescence at room temperature in their solid states at the wavelengths of 678, 601, and 672 nm, respectively. In addition, they show phosphorescence at 634, 635, and 582 nm, respectively, in the 2 wt.% (PMMA) films, and phosphorescence at 670, 675, and 589 nm, respectively, in the deoxygenated CH2Cl2 solutions. Among three complexes, complex 1 shows red emission at 634 nm with phosphorescent quantum yield Ф = 67% in the 2 wt.% PMMA film. Furthermore, complex 1-based organic light-emitting diode is fabricated using a vapor-phase deposition process, and their maximum external quantum efficiency reaches 20.52%, which is the highest percentage obtained by using the dinuclear Pd(II) complex triplet emitters with the CIE coordinates of (0.62, 0.38).

Synthesis and Characterization of Self-Assembled Chiral FeII 2 L3 Cages.

Project description:We present here the synthesis of chiral BINOL-derived (BINOL=1,1'-bi-2-naphthol) bisamine and bispyridine-aldehyde building blocks that can be used for the self-assembly of novel chiral FeII 2 L3 cages when mixed with an iron(II) precursor. The properties of a series of chiral cages were studied by NMR and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, cold-spray ionization MS, and molecular modeling. Upon formation of the M2 L3 cages, the iron corners can adopt various isomeric forms: mer, fac-Δ, or fac-Λ. We found that the coordination geometry around the metal centers in R-Cages 1 and 2 were influenced by the chiral BINOL backbone only to a limited extent, as a mixture of cages was formed with fac and mer configurations at the iron corners. However, single cage species (fac-RR-Cage and fac-RS-Cage) that are enantiopure and highly symmetric were obtained by generating these chiral M2 L3 cages by using the bispyridine-aldehyde building blocks in combination with chiral amine moieties to form pyridylimine ligands for coordination to iron. Next to consistent NMR spectra, the CD spectra confirm the configurations fac-(Λ,Λ) and fac-(Δ,Δ) corresponding to RR- and RS-Cage, respectively.

Homochiral Emissive Λ8 - and Δ8 -[Ir8 Pd4 ]16+ Supramolecular Cages.

Project description:Synthetic self-assembly is a powerful technique for the bottom-up construction of discrete and well-defined polyhedral nanostructures resembling the spherical shape of large biological systems. In recent years, numerous Archimedean-shaped coordination cages have been reported based on the assembly of bent monodentate organic ligands containing two or more distal pyridyl rings and square-planar PdII ions. The formation of photoactive PdII metallamacrocycles and cages, however, remain rare. Here we report the first examples of emissive and homochiral supramolecular cages of the form [Ir8 Pd4 ]16+ . These cages provide a suitably sized cavity to host large guest molecules. Importantly, encapsulation and energy transfer have been observed between the blue-emitting NBu4 [Ir(dFppy)2 (CN)2 ] guest and the red-emitting Δ8 -[Ir8 Pd4 ]16+ cage.

Symmetry Breaking and Cooperative Spin Crossover in a Hofmann-Type Coordination Polymer Based on Negatively Charged {FeII(μ2-[MII(CN)4])2}n2n- Layers (MII = Pd, Pt).

Project description:We report herein the synthesis and characterization of two unprecedented isomorphous spin-crossover two-dimensional coordination polymers of the Hofmann-type formulated {FeII(Hdpyan)2(μ2-[MII(CN)4])2}, with MII = Pd, Pt and Hdpyan is the in situ partially protonated form of 2,5-(dipyridin-4-yl)aniline (dpyan). The FeII is axially coordinated by the pyridine ring attached to the 2-position of the aniline ring, while it is equatorially surrounded by four [MII(CN)4]2- planar groups acting as trans μ2-bidentate ligands defining layers, which stack parallel to each other. The other pyridine group of Hdpyan, being protonated, remains peripheral but involved in a strong [MII-C≡N···Hpy+] hydrogen bond between alternate layers. This provokes a nearly 90° rotation of the plane defined by the [MII(CN)4]2- groups, with respect to the average plane defined by the layers, forcing the observed uncommon bridging mode and the accumulation of negative charge around each FeII, which is compensated by the axial [Hdpyan]+ ligands. According to the magnetic and calorimetric data, both compounds undergo a strong cooperative spin transition featuring a 10-12 K wide hysteresis loop centered at 220 (Pt) and 211 K (Pd) accompanied by large entropy variations, 97.4 (Pt) and 102.9 (Pd) J/K mol. The breaking symmetry involving almost 90° rotation of one of the two coordinated pyridines together with the large unit-cell volume change per FeII (ca. 50 Å3), and subsequent release of significantly short interlayer contacts upon the low-spin → high-spin event, accounts for the strong cooperativity.

Pd(II) Coordination Sphere Engineering: Pyridine Cages, Quinoline Bowls, and Heteroleptic Pills Binding One or Two Fullerenes.

Project description:Fullerenes and their derivatives are of tremendous technological relevance. Synthetic access and application are still hampered by tedious purification protocols, peculiar solubility, and limited control over regioselective derivatization. We present a modular self-assembly system based on a new low-molecular-weight binding motif, appended by two palladium(II)-coordinating units of different steric demands, to either form a [Pd2L14]4+ cage or an unprecedented [Pd2L23(MeCN)2]4+ bowl (with L1 = pyridyl, L2 = quinolinyl donors). The former was used as a selective induced-fit receptor for C60. The latter, owing to its more open structure, also allows binding of C70 and fullerene derivatives. By exposing only a fraction of the bound guests' surface, the bowl acts as fullerene protecting group to control functionalization, as demonstrated by exclusive monoaddition of anthracene. In a hierarchical manner, sterically low-demanding dicarboxylates were found to bridge pairs of bowls into pill-shaped dimers, able to host two fullerenes. The hosts allow transferring bound fullerenes into a variety of organic solvents, extending the scope of possible derivatization and processing methodologies.

Platinum(II)-Based Convex Trigonal-Prismatic Cages via Coordination-Driven Self-Assembly and C60 Encapsulation.

Project description:The development of three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular coordination complexes is of great interest from both fundamental and application points of view because these materials are useful in molecular catalysis, separation and purification, sensing, etc. Herein, we describe the synthesis of two Klärner's molecular-clip-based tetrapyridyl donors, which possess a C-shaped structure as shown by X-ray analysis, and subsequently use them to prepare four convex trigonal-prismatic cages via coordination-driven self-assembly with two 180° diplatinum(II) acceptors. The cages are fully characterized by multinuclear NMR (31P and 1H) analysis, diffusion-ordered spectroscopy, electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and UV/vis absorption spectroscopy. Moreover, the incorporation of molecular-clip-based ligands provides these cages with free cavities to encapsulate fullerene C60 via aromatic interactions, which may be useful for fullerene separation and purification. The studies described herein enlarge the scope of the platinum(II)-based directional bonding approach in the preparation of curved 3D metallacages and their host-guest chemistry.

Donor-Site-Directed Rational Assembly of Heteroleptic cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ] Coordination Cages from Picolyl Ligands.

Project description:A donor-site engineering approach facilitates the formation of heteroleptic [Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ cage structures through a favored cis-'in2 /out2 ' spatial configuration of the methyl groups of 5- and 3-substituted bis-monodentate picolyl ligands with flat acridone and bent phenothiazine backbones. The heteroleptic cages were confirmed by ESI-MS and 2D NMR experiments as well as DFT calculations, which pointed toward a cis-configuration being energetically favored. This was further supported by the synthesis and X-ray structure of a previously unreported cis-[Pd(2-picoline)4 ]2+ complex. The formation of homoleptic structures, however, was met with considerable steric hindrance at the PdII centers, as observed by the formation of [Pd2 L3 (solvent)2 ]4+ and [Pd2 L2 (solvent)4 ]4+ species when only one type of acridone-based ligand was offered. In contrast, bent phenothiazine ligands with outside-pointing methyl groups showed the ability to form interpenetrated double-cages, as revealed by X-ray crystallography. The general route presented herein enables the assembly of uniform cis-[Pd2 L2 L'2 ]4+ coordination cages, thus furthering the possibility to increase structural and functional complexity in supramolecular systems.
