Synthesis and crystal structure of a new magnesium phosphate Na₃RbMg₇(PO₄)₆.

ABSTRACT: A new magnesium phosphate, Na₃RbMg₇(PO₄)₆ [tris-odium rubidium hepta-magnesium hexakis(ortho-phosphate)], has been synthesized as single crystals by the flux method and exhibits a new structure type. Its original structure is built up from MgO _x (x = 5 and 6) polyhedra linked directly to each other through common corners or edges and reinforced by corner-sharing with PO₄ tetra-hedra. The resulting anionic three-dimensional framework leads to the formation of channels along the [010] direction, in which the Na⁺ cations are located, while the Rb⁺ cations are located in large inter-stitial cavities.

This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The structure belongs to the alluaudite structural type and thus, it obeys the X(2)X(1)M(1)M(2)2(PO4)3 general formula. Both the X(2) and X(1) sites are fully occupied by sodium, while M(1) is occupied by calcium and M(2) exhibits a statistical distribution of iron and manganese.

Synthesis, crystal structure and charge-distribution validation of a new alluaudite-type phosphate, Na2.22Mn0.87In1.68(PO4)3.

Project description:Na2.22Mn0.87In1.68(PO4)3, sodium manganese indium tris-(phosphate) (2.22/0.87/1.68), was obtained in the form of single crystals by a flux method and was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound belongs to the alluaudite structure type (space group C2/c) with general formula X(2)X(1)M(1)M(2)2(PO4)3. The X(2) and X(1) sites are partially occupied by sodium [occupancy 0.7676 (17) and 1/2] while the M(1) and M(2) sites are fully occupied within a mixed distribution of sodium/manganese(II) and manganese(II)/indium, respectively. The three-dimensional anionic framework is built up on the basis of M(2)2O10 dimers that share opposite edges with M(1)O6 octa-hedra, thus forming infinite chains extending parallel to [10]. The linkage between these chains is ensured by PO4 tetra-hedra through common vertices. The three-dimensional network thus constructed delimits two types of hexa-gonal channels, resulting from the catenation of M(2)2O10 dimers, M(1)O6 octa-hedra and PO4 tetra-hedra through edge- and corner-sharing. The channels are occupied by Na+ cations with coordination numbers of seven and eight.

Crystal structure of SrCo4(OH)(PO4)3, a new hy-droxy-phosphate.

Project description:Single crystals of strontium tetra-cobalt tris-(orthophosphate) hydroxide, SrCo4(OH)(PO4)3, were grown serendipitously under hydro-thermal conditions at 473 K. The crystal structure consists of undulating chains of edge-sharing [CoO6] octa-hedra that are linked into (010) layers by common vertices between chains. Adjacent layers are linked along [010] into a framework structure by tetra-hedral [CoO4] units and by PO4 tetra-hedra. The framework delimits channels extending along [100] in which the eleven-coordinate strontium cations are situated. Bifurcated O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds of weak strengths consolidate the crystal packing. The title compound was also characterized by infrared spectroscopy.

Synthesis and crystal structure of NaCuIn(PO4)2.

Project description:Single crystals of sodium copper(II) indium bis-[phosphate(V)], NaCuIn(PO4)2, were grown from the melt under atmospheric conditions. The title phosphate crystallizes in the space group P21/n and is isotypic with KCuFe(PO4)2. In the crystal, two [CuO5] trigonal bipyramids share an edge to form a dimer [Cu2O8] that is connected to two PO4 tetra-hedra. The obtained [Cu2P2O12] units are inter-connected through vertices to form sheets that are sandwiched between undulating layers resulting from the junction of PO4 tetra-hedra and [InO6] octa-hedra. The two types of layers are alternately stacked along [101] and are joined into a three-dimensional framework through vertex- and edge-sharing, leaving channels parallel to the stacking direction. The channels host the sodium cations that are surrounded by four oxygen atoms in form of a distorted disphenoid.

Synthesis, crystal structure determination of a novel phosphate Ag1.64Zn1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3 with an alluaudite-like structure.

Project description:Single crystals of Ag1.64Zn1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3 [silver zinc iron phosphate (1.64/1.64/1.36/3)] have been synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The title compound crystallizes with an alluaudite-like structure. All atoms of the structure are in general positions except for four, which reside on special positions of the space group, C2/c. The Ag+ cations reside at full occupancy on inversion centre sites and at partial occupancy (64%) on a twofold rotation axis. In this structure, the unique Fe3+ ion with one of the two Zn2+ cations are substitutionally disordered on the same general position (Wyckoff site 8f), with a respective ratio of 0.68/0.32 (occupancies were fixed so as to ensure electrical neutrality for the whole structure). The remaining O and P atoms are located in general positions. The three-dimensional framework of this structure consists of kinked chains of edge-sharing octa-hedra stacked parallel to [10]. These chains are built up by a succession of [MO6] (M = Zn/Fe or Zn) units. Adjacent chains are connected by the PO4 anions, forming sheets oriented perpendicular to [010]. These inter-connected sheets generate two types of channels parallel to the c axis, in which the Ag+ cations are located. The validity and adequacy of the proposed structural model of Ag1.64Zn1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3 was established by means of bond-valence-sum (BVS) and charge-distribution (CHARDI) analysis tools.

Na(4)FeFe(PO(4))(3), a new synthetic NASICON-type phosphate.

Project description:This paper reports the crystal structure of tetra-sodium diiron tris(phosphate), Na(4)Fe(2+)Fe(3+)(PO(4))(3), which has been synthesized hydro-thermally at 773 K and 0.1 GPa. The crystal structure has been refined in the space group Rc and is identical to that of γ-NASICON. The heteropolyhedral framework is based on a regular alternation, in three dimensions, of corner-sharing PO(4) tetra-hedra and FeO(6) octa-hedra, constituting so-called 'lantern units' stacked along the c axis. The Na(+) cations are distributed over two crystallographic sites: the six-coordinated Na1 site which lies between two 'lantern units', and the eight-coordinated Na2 site which lies at the same z value as the P site.

Project description:The asymmetric unit of the title salt, [p-FC6H4CH2NH3]+·H2PO4-, contains one 4-fluoro-benzyl-ammonium cation and one di-hydrogen phosphate anion. In the crystal, the H2PO4- anions are linked by O-H?O hydrogen bonds to build corrugated layers extending parallel to the ab plane. The FC6H4CH2NH3+ cations lie between these anionic layers to maximize the electrostatic inter-actions and are linked to the H2PO4- anions through N-H?O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional supra-molecular network. Two hydrogen atoms belonging to the di-hydrogen phosphate anion are statistically occupied due to disorder along the OH?HO direction.

Crystal structure of a silver-, cobalt- and iron-based phosphate with an alluaudite-like structure: Ag1.655Co1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3.

Project description:The new silver-, cobalt- and iron-based phosphate, silver cobalt iron tris(ortho-phosphate), Ag1.655Co1.64Fe1.36(PO4)3, was synthesized by solid-state reactions. Its structure is isotypic to that of Na2Co2Fe(PO4)3, and belongs to the alluaudite family, with a partial cationic disorder, the AgI atoms being located on an inversion centre and twofold rotation axis sites (Wyckoff positions 4a and 4e), with partial occupancies of 0.885 (2) and 0.7688 (19), respectively. One of the two P atoms in the asymmetric unit completely fills one 4e site while the Co and Fe atoms fill another 4e site, with partial occupancies of 0.86 (5) and 0.14 (5), respectively. The remaining Co2+ and Fe3+ cations are distributed on a general position, 8f, in a 0.39 (4):0.61 (4) ratio. All O atoms and the other P atoms are in general positions. The structure is built up from zigzag chains of edge-sharing [MO6] (M = Fe/Co) octa-hedra stacked parallel to [101]. These chains are linked together through PO4 tetra-hedra, forming polyhedral sheets perpendicular to [010]. The resulting framework displays two types of channels running along [001], in which the AgI atoms (coordination number eight) are located.

Redetermination and new description of the crystal structure of vanthoffite, Na6Mg(SO4)4.

Project description:The crystal structure of vanthoffite {hexa-sodium magnesium tetra-kis[sulfate-(VI)]}, Na6Mg(SO4)4, was solved in the year 1964 on a synthetic sample [Fischer & Hellner (1964 ?). Acta Cryst. 17, 1613]. Here we report a redetermination of its crystal structure on a mineral sample with improved precision. It was refined in the space group P21/c from a crystal originating from Surtsey, Iceland. The unique Mg (site symmetry ) and the two S atoms are in usual, only slightly distorted octa-hedral and tetra-hedral coordinations, respectively. The three independent Na atoms are in a distorted octa-hedral coordination (1×) and distorted 7-coordinations inter-mediate between a 'split octa-hedron' and a penta-gonal bipyramid (2×). [MgO6] coordination polyhedra inter-change with one half of the sulfate tetra-hedra in <011> chains forming a (100) meshed layer, with dimers formed by edge-sharing [NaO7] polyhedra filling the inter-chain spaces. The other [NaO7] polyhedra are organized in a parallel layer formed by [010] and [001] chains united through edge sharing and bonds to the remaining half of sulfate groups and to [NaO6] octa-hedra. The two types of layers inter-connect through tight bonding, which explains the lack of morphological characteristics typical of layered structures.

Crystal growth, structure elucidation and CHARDI/BVS investigations of β-KCoFe(PO4)2.

Project description:Single crystals of β-KCoFe(PO4)2, potassium cobalt(II) iron(III) bis-(ortho-phosphate), were grown from the melt under atmospheric conditions. This phosphate crystallizes isotypically with KZnFe(PO4)2 in space group C2/c, adopting a zeolite-ABW type of structure. The structure of the present phosphate is distinguished by an occupational disorder of the two transition-metal sites with ratios Fe:Co of 0.5725:0.4275 for the first and 0.4275:0.5725 for the second site. In the crystal structure, PO4 and (Co,Fe)O4 tetra-hedra are linked through vertices to form elliptical rings with the sequence DDDDUUUU of up (U) and down (D) pointing vertices. Each eight-membered ring is surrounded by four other rings of the same type, delimiting inter-stices with rectangular shape. This arrangement leads to the formation of [(Co/Fe)(PO4)]- ∞ sheets parallel to (001). Stacking of the sheets into a three-dimensional framework results in the formation of two types of channels. The first one is occupied by potassium cations, whereas the second one remains vacant. Calculations of bond-valence sums and charge distribution were used to confirm the structure model.
