Alkylation of Benzene with Propylene in a Flow-Through Membrane Reactor and Fixed-Bed Reactor: Preliminary Results.

ABSTRACT: Benzene alkylation with propylene was studied in the gas phase using a catalytic membrane reactor and a fixed-bed reactor in the temperature range of 200-300 °C and with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 51 h^-1. β-zeolite was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis using silica, aluminum metal and TEAOH as precursors. The membrane's XRD patterns showed good crystallinity for the β-zeolite film, while scanning electron microscopy SEM results indicated that its random polycrystalline film was approximately 1 μm thick. The powders' specific area was determined to be 400 m²×g^-1 by N₂ adsorption/desorption, and the TPD results indicated an overall acidity of 3.4 mmol NH₃×g^-1. Relative to the powdered catalyst, the catalytic membrane showed good activity and product selectivity for cumene.

Development of a fixed-bed anammox reactor with high treatment potential.

Project description:A plug-flow type anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) reactor was developed using malt ceramics (MC) produced from carbonized spent grains as the biomass carriers for anammox sludge. Partial nitrified effluent of the filtrate from the sludge dehydrator of a brewery company was used as influent to a 20 L anammox reactor using MC. An average volumetric nitrogen removal rate (VNR) of 8.78 kg-N/m(3)/day was maintained stably for 76 days with 1 h of HRT. In a larger anammox reactor (400 L), an average VNR of 4.84 kg-N/m(3)/day could be maintained for 86 days during the treatment of low strength synthetic inorganic wastewater. As a result of bacterial community analysis for the 20 L anammox reactor, Asahi BRW1, probably originating from the wastewater collected at Asahi Breweries, was detected as the dominant anammox bacterium. These anammox reactors were characterized by a high NH(4)-N removal capacity for low strength wastewater with a short hydraulic retention time.

Heterogeneous metallaphotoredox catalysis in a continuous-flow packed-bed reactor.

Project description:Metallaphotoredox catalysis is a powerful and versatile synthetic platform that enables cross-couplings under mild conditions without the need for noble metals. Its growing adoption in drug discovery has translated into an increased interest in sustainable and scalable reaction conditions. Here, we report a continuous-flow approach to metallaphotoredox catalysis using a heterogeneous catalyst that combines the function of a photo- and a nickel catalyst in a single material. The catalyst is embedded in a packed-bed reactor to combine reaction and (catalyst) separation in one step. The use of a packed bed simplifies the translation of optimized batch reaction conditions to continuous flow, as the only components present in the reaction mixture are the substrate and a base. The metallaphotoredox cross-coupling of sulfinates with aryl halides was used as a model system. The catalyst was shown to be stable, with a very low decrease of the yield (≈1% per day) during a continuous experiment over seven days, and to be effective for C-O arylations when carboxylic acids are used as nucleophile instead of sulfinates.

Heterogeneously Catalysed Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Menthol in a Fixed-Bed Reactor in the Gas Phase.

Project description:For the first time, the oxidative dehydrogenation of (-)-menthol to (-)-menthone and (+)-isomenthone in a marketable quality was carried out in a continuous gas phase reactor as a sustainable process using molecular oxygen as green oxidant and solid catalysts which do not contaminate the product mixture and which are easily to remove. The diastereomeric purity remained largely unchanged. Three types of catalysts were found to be very active and selective in the formation of menthone and isomenthone: AgSr/SiO2, CuO distributed on a basic support and RuMnCe/CeO2, where Ru, Mn and Ce exist in an oxidized state. The best overall yield of menthon/isomenthone obtained with an Ag-based catalyst was 58 % at 64 % selectivity, with a Cu-based catalyst 41 % at 51 % selectivity and with a Ru-based catalyst 68 % at 73 % selectivity. Reaction conditions were widely optimized.

Catalytic Pyrolysis of Polypropylene to Benzene, Toluene, and Xylene (BTX) Using a Double-Fluidized-Bed Reactor.

Project description:The current plastic value chain is highly linear, leading to large amounts of waste plastics that harm the environment and human health. Recycling is required, and among the options, catalytic pyrolysis is particularly suited to convert polyolefin-rich plastic waste into useful chemicals such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). In this paper, we demonstrate ex situ catalytic pyrolysis of polypropylene in a continuous double-fluidized-bed reactor to produce BTX. The optimal pyrolysis temperature in the first fluidized-bed reactor was 550 °C, giving a BTX yield of 22.3 wt % (based on PP input). Lowering the nitrogen flow rate and the use of smaller catalyst particle sizes favor BTX formation. Our novel reactor concept showed good operational stability at longer times on stream (TOS, 10 h). Catalyst activity was slightly reduced during TOS, as is evident from a small decrease in BTX yields. Detailed catalyst characterization studies showed that coke formation is the main reason for catalyst deactivation. In addition, chemoselectivity was also a function of TOS and the selectivity to benzene and toluene decreased, while higher amounts of xylenes were formed.

Project description:A pressure-based variable-bed flow reactor built for peptide synthesis and capable of real-time monitoring of resin swelling was adapted for automated glycan assembly. In the context of the solid-phase synthesis of several oligosaccharides, the coupling efficiencies, resin growth patterns, and saccharide solvation during the synthesis were determined. The presented work provides the first estimation of on-resin oligosaccharide solvation and an alternative technique to UV-vis monitoring.

Esterification of Acetic Acid by Flow-Type Membrane Reactor with AEI Zeolite Membrane.

Project description:AEI-type zeolite membrane for dehydration was prepared, and a flow-type membrane reactor for the esterification of acetic acid and ethanol by AEI membrane was developed. A synthesized AEI membrane had suitable molecular sieving property for gas separation (H2/i-butane and CO2/CH4) and pervaporation (H2O/acetic acid). AEI membrane showed H2O permeance of 6.2 × 10-7 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1 with a separation factor of 67 at 363 K for the equimolar mixture of H2O/acetic acid. AEI membrane maintained stable performance under acidic conditions. The yield of ethyl acetate at 363 K in a flow-type membrane reactor with AEI membrane successfully exceeded the equilibrium of 69.1%, reaching 89.0%. The flow rate of feed solution strongly affected the conversion of acetic acid and the space-time yield (STY) of ethyl acetate. Due to the more significant proportion of water selectively removed from the reaction system at a lower feed flow rate, the thermodynamic equilibrium shifted significantly, resulting in higher conversions. In contrast, STY increased with increasing feed flow rate. Our flow-type membrane reactor exhibited a relatively large STY of 430 kg m-3 h-1 compared with the batch-type membrane reactor previously reported.

Efficient phenol degradation by laccase immobilized on functional magnetic nanoparticles in fixed bed reactor under high-gradient magnetic field.

Project description:Enzymatic degradation of emerging contaminants has gained great interest for the past few years. However, free enzyme often incurs high costs in practice. The immobilized laccase on the polyethylenimine (PEI)-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4-NH2-PEI-laccase) was fabricated to efficiently degrade phenolic compounds continuously in a newly fixed bed reactor under a high-gradient magnetic field. The degradation rate of continuous treatment in the bed after 18 h was 2.38 times as high as that of batch treatment after six successive operations with the same treatment duration. Under the optimal conditions of volume fraction of nickel wires mesh, flow rate of phenol solution, phenol concentration, and Fe3O4-NH2-PEI-laccase amount, the degradation rate of phenol kept over 70.30% in 48 h continuous treatment. The fixed bed reactor filled with Fe3O4-NH2-PEI-laccase provided a promising avenue for the continuous biodegradation of phenolic compounds for industrial wastewater in practice.

Continuous Room-Temperature Hydrogen Release from Liquid Organic Carriers in a Photocatalytic Packed-Bed Flow Reactor.

Project description:Despite the potential of hydrogen (H2 ) storage in liquid organic carriers to achieve carbon neutrality, the energy required for H2 release and the cost of catalyst recycling have hindered its large-scale adoption. In response, a photo flow reactor packed with rhodium (Rh)/titania (TiO2 ) photocatalyst was reported for the continuous and selective acceptorless dehydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline to H2 gas and quinoline under visible light irradiation at room temperature. The tradeoff between the reactor pressure drop and its photocatalytic surface area was resolved by selective in-situ photodeposition of Rh in the photo flow reactor post-packing on the outer surface of the TiO2 microparticles available to photon flux, thereby reducing the optimal Rh loading by 10 times compared to a batch reactor, while facilitating catalyst reuse and regeneration. An example of using quinoline as a hydrogen acceptor to lower the energy of the hydrogen production step was demonstrated via the water-gas shift reaction.
