Chirality and energy transfer amplified circularly polarized luminescence in composite nanohelix.

ABSTRACT: Transfer of both chirality and energy information plays an important role in biological systems. Here we show a chiral donor ?-gelator and assembled it with an achiral ?-acceptor to see how chirality and energy can be transferred in a composite donor-acceptor system. It is found that the individual chiral gelator can self-assemble into nanohelix. In the presence of the achiral acceptor, the self-assembly can also proceed and lead to the formation of the composite nanohelix. In the composite nanohelix, an energy transfer is realized. Interestingly, in the composite nanohelix, the achiral acceptor can both capture the supramolecular chirality and collect the circularly polarized energy from the chiral donor, showing both supramolecular chirality and energy transfer amplified circularly polarized luminescence (ETACPL).

Transfer of Axial Chirality to the Nanoscale Endows Carbon Nanodots with Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Project description:We report the synthesis, purification and characterization of chiral carbon nanodots starting from atropoisomeric precursors. The obtained atropoisomeric carbon nanodots are soluble in organic solvents and have good thermal stability, which are desirable features for technological applications. The synthetic protocol is robust, as it supports a number of variations in terms of molecular doping agents. Remarkably, the combination of axially chiral precursors and 1,4-benzoquinone as doping agent results in green-emissive carbon dots displaying circularly polarized luminescence. Dissymmetry factors of |3.5|×10-4 are obtained in solution, without the need of any additional element of chirality. Introducing axial chirality expands the strategies available to tailor the properties of carbon nanodots, paving the way for carbon nanoparticles that combine good processability in organic solvents with engineered advanced chiroptical properties.

Sequentially amplified circularly polarized ultraviolet luminescence for enantioselective photopolymerization.

Project description:Chiral optical materials based on circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) have emerged rapidly due to their feasible applications in diverse fields of research. However, limited to the small luminescence dissymmetry factor (glum), real application examples have rarely been reported. Here, we present a complex system, which show intense circularly polarized ultraviolet luminescence (CPUVL) with large glum value, enabling a chiral UV light triggered enantioselective polymerization. By integrating sensitized triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion and CPL, both visible-to-UV upconversion emission and upconverted circularly polarized ultraviolet luminescence (UC-CPUVL) were obtained in the systems, built of chiral annihilator R(S)-4,12-biphenyl[2,2]paracyclophane (R-/S-TP), and a thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) sensitizer. After dispersing this upconversion system into room-temperature nematic liquid crystal, induced chiral nematic liquid crystal could significantly amplify the glum value (0.19) of UC-CPUVL. Further, the UC-CPUVL emission has been used to trigger the enantioselective photopolymerization of diacetylene. This work paves the way for the further development of functional application of CPL active materials.

Lanthanide MOFs for inducing molecular chirality of achiral stilbazolium with strong circularly polarized luminescence and efficient energy transfer for color tuning.

Project description:We present herein an innovative host-guest method to achieve induced molecular chirality from an achiral stilbazolium dye (DSM). The host-guest system is exquisitely designed by encapsulating the dye molecule in the molecule-sized chiral channel of homochiral lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (P-(+)/M-(-)-TbBTC), in which the P- or M-configuration of the dye is unidirectionally generated via a spatial confinement effect of the MOF and solidified by the dangling water molecules in the channel. Induced chirality of DSM is characterized by solid-state circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and micro-area polarized emission of DSM@TbTBC, both excited with 514 nm light. A luminescence dissymmetry factor of 10-3 is obtained and the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the encapsulated DSM in DSM@TbTBC is ∼10%, which is close to the PLQY value of DSM in dilute dichloromethane. Color-tuning from green to red is achieved, owing to efficient energy transfer (up to 56%) from Ln3+ to the dye. Therefore, this study for the first time exhibits an elegant host-guest system that shows induced strong CPL emission and enables efficient energy transfer from the host chiral Ln-MOF to the achiral guest DSM with the emission color tuned from green to red.

Photon-upconverting chiral liquid crystal: significantly amplified upconverted circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:In this work, we demonstrate a room-temperature chiral liquid crystal which shows remarkable photon upconverted circularly polarized luminescence (UC-CPL). Circularly polarized luminescent materials with higher dissymmetry factor (g lum) underpin the basis for future applications. Since most chiral organic molecules have only a small g lum, it is vital to explore a new pathway to amplify the g lum of organic compounds. Here, by dispersing a chiral emitter and a triplet donor into a room-temperature nematic liquid crystal, highly efficient triplet-triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) and UC-CPL were observed in the induced chiral nematic liquid crystal (N*LC). Moreover, this system could simultaneously amplify the promoted circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) and the upconverted circularly polarized luminescence. The dissymmetry factors g lum of CPL and UC-CPL have been amplified by three orders of magnitude and one order of magnitude, respectively.

Chiral exciplex dyes showing circularly polarized luminescence: extension of the excimer chirality rule.

Project description:A series of axially chiral binaphthyls and quaternaphthyls possessing two kinds of aromatic fluorophores, such as pyrenyl, perylenyl, and 4-(dimethylamino)phenyl groups, arranged alternately were synthesized by a divergent method. In the excited state, the fluorophores selectively formed a unidirectionally twisted exciplex (excited heterodimer) by a cumulative steric effect and exhibited circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). They are the first examples of a monomolecular exciplex CPL dye. This versatile method for producing exciplex CPL dyes also improved fluorescence intensity, and the CPL properties were not very sensitive to the solvent or to the temperature owing to the conformationally rigid exciplex. This systematic study allowed us to confirm that the excimer chirality rule can be applied to the exciplex dyes: left- and right-handed exciplexes with a twist angle of less than 90° exhibit (-)- and (+)-CPL, respectively.

Boosting Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Organic Conjugated Systems via Twisted Intramolecular Charge Transfer.

Project description:Realizing a high luminescence dissymmetry factor (g lum) is a paramount yet challenging issue in the research field of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Here, we reported a novel set of organic conjugated systems with twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) characteristics based on conjugated o-carborane-binaphthyl dyads composing of binaphthyl units as chiral electron donors and o-carborane units as achiral electron acceptors, demonstrating intense CPL with large g lum values. Interestingly, single-crystalline o-1 exhibited a high-level brightness and a large g lum factor as high as +0.13, whereas single-crystalline o-2 processed a relatively low brightness with a decreased g lum value to -0.04. The significant diversity of CPL-active properties was triggered by the selective introduction of o-carborane units onto the binaphthyl units. Benefiting from the large magnetic dipole transition moments in TICT states, the CPL activity of TICT o-carborane-based materials exhibited amplified circular polarization. This study provides an efficient molecular engineering strategy for the rational design and development of highly efficient CPL-active materials.

A [2]Rotaxane-Based Circularly Polarized Luminescence Switch.

Project description:A rotaxane-based molecular shuttle has been synthesized in which the switching of the position of a fluorescent macrocycle on the thread turns "on" or "off" the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) of the system while maintaining similar fluorescence profiles and quantum yields in both states. The chiroptical activity relies on the chiral information transfer from an ammonium salt incorporating d- or l-phenylalanine residues as chiral stereogenic covalent units to an otherwise achiral crown ether macrocycle bearing a luminescent 2,2'-bipyrene unit when they interact through hydrogen bonding. Each enantiomeric thread induces CPL responses of opposite signs on the macrocycle. Upon addition of base, the switching of the position of the macrocycle to a triazolium group disables the chiral information transfer to the macrocycle, switching "off" the CPL response. The in situ switching upon several acid/base cycles is also demonstrated.

Circularly polarized luminescence from organic micro-/nano-structures.

Project description:Circularly polarized light exhibits promising applications in future displays and photonic technologies. Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) from chiral luminophores is an ideal approach to directly generating circularly polarized light, in which the energy loss induced by the circularly polarized filters can be reduced. Among various chiral luminophores, organic micro-/nano-structures have attracted increasing attention owing to the high quantum efficiency and luminescence dissymmetry factor. Herein, the recent progress of CPL from organic micro-/nano-structures is summarized. Firstly, the design principles of CPL-active organic micro-/nano-structures are expounded from the construction of micro-/nano-structure and the introduction of chirality. Based on these design principles, several typical organic micro-/nano-structures with CPL activity are introduced in detail, including self-assembly of small molecules, self-assembly of π-conjugated polymers, and self-assembly on micro-/nanoscale architectures. Subsequently, we discuss the external stimuli that can regulate CPL performance, including solvents, pH value, metal ions, mechanical force, and temperature. We also summarize the applications of CPL-active materials in organic light-emitting diodes, optical information processing, and chemical and biological sensing. Finally, the current challenges and prospects in this emerging field are presented. It is expected that this review will provide a guide for the design of excellent CPL-active materials.

Manipulating the Assembly of Au Nanoclusters for Luminescence Enhancement and Circularly Polarized Luminescence

Project description:Au nanocluster (AuNCs)-based luminescent functional materials have attracted the interest of researchers owing to their small size, tractable surface modification, phosphorescence lifetime and biocompatibility. However, the poor luminescence quantum yield (QY) of AuNCs limits their practical applications. Herein, we synthesized a type of AuNCs modified by 4,6-diamino-2-mercaptopyrimidine hydrate (DPT-AuNCs). Furthermore, organic acids, i.e., citric acid (CA) and tartaric acid (TA), were chosen for co-assembly with DPT-AuNCs to produce AuNCs-based luminescent materials with enhanced emission. Firstly, it was found that CA could significantly enhance the emission of DPT−AuNCs with the formation of red emission nanofibers (QY = 17.31%), which showed a potential for usage in I− detection. The n···π/π···π interaction between the CA and the DPT ligand was proposed as crucial for the emission. Moreover, chiral TA could not only improve the emission of DPT-AuNCs, but could also transfer its chirality to DPT-AuNCs and induce the formation of circularly polarized luminescence (CPL)-active nanofibers. It was demonstrated that the CPL signal could increase 4.6-fold in a ternary CA/TA/DPT-AuNCs co-assembly system. This work provides a convenient way to build AuNCs-based luminescent materials as probes, and opens a new avenue for building CPL-active materials by achiral NCs through a co-assembly strategy.

A chemosensor-based chiral coassembly with switchable circularly polarized luminescence.

Project description:Fluorescent chemosensors represent fast response to analytes with pronounced luminescent variations. They are promising as potential candidates in controlling luminescence and chiroptical activities of self-assembled chiral systems, which however have not been accomplished to date. We present a coassembled multiple component system that could respond to SO2 derivatives, giving rise to dynamic aggregation behaviors and switchable luminescence as well as circularly polarized luminescence (CPL). Cholesteryl-naphthalimide and coumarin derivatives coassemble into vesicles and nanohelices under the solvent strategy, behaving as energy transfer donor and accepter respectively. Energy transfer enables CPL transition from green to red depending on the molar fraction. After the addition of SO2 derivatives, hypochromic shifts occur to CPL due to the nucleophilic addition reaction to coumarin domain, hindering energy transfer and allow for the emergence of pristine luminescence. Here, we show a protocol to control over luminescence and chiroptical features of supramolecular chiral self-assemblies using fluorescent chemosensors.
