Increased carrier mobility in end-functionalized oligosilanes.

ABSTRACT: We show that a class of oligosilane-arene σ, π-hybrid materials exhibits distinct and enhanced solid-state electronic properties relative to its parent components. In the single crystal structure, the σ-conjugation axis of one molecule points towards the π-face of a neighboring molecule due to an unusual gauche conformation. This organization is hypothesized to be beneficial for charge transport. We show that solution-deposited crystalline films of the hybrid materials show up to a 100-fold increase in space-charge limited current (SCLC) mobility relative to literature reports of photoinduced hole transport in oligosilane films. The discovery that σ, π-hybrids are more than the sum of their parts offers a design opportunity for new materials.

Ultrahigh anisotropic carrier mobility in ZnSb monolayers functionalized with halogen atoms.

Project description:The experimental fabrication of novel two-dimensional ZnSb inspires us to explore the tunability of its fundamental physical properties. In this work, we present the density functional theory simulations on the mechanical, electronic and transport properties of the two-dimensional ZnSb monolayers functionalized with halogen atoms. It is found that the halogen atoms prefer to form ionic bonds with Sb atoms and these ZnSbX (X = Cl, Br and I) monolayers are very flexible with Young's moduli ranging from 24.02 N m-1 to 30.16 N m-1 along the armchair and zigzag directions. The pristine ZnSb monolayer sheet exhibits metallic phase while the functionalization can lead to a metal-to-semiconductor transition with band gaps as large as 0.55 eV. The transport study reveals a large tunability with the hole mobility reaching 43.44 × 103 cm2 V-1 s-1 along the armchair direction and the electron mobility as high as 36.99 × 103 cm2 V-1 s-1 along the zigzag direction. In contrast, the electron mobility along the armchair direction and the hole mobility along the zigzag direction are of relatively small magnitude. The ultrahigh carrier mobility together with the directional anisotropy can boost the separation of photo-excited electron-hole pairs. The finite band gaps and exceptional transport property of ZnSbX monolayers render them new materials with promising applications in flexible optoelectronic and nanoelectronic devices.

Hypercoordinated Oligosilanes Based on Aminotrisphenols.

Project description:The hypercoordinated silicon chlorides ClSi[(o-OC6H4)3N] (3) and ClSi[(OC6H2Me2CH2)3N] (5) were used for the synthesis of catenated derivatives (Me3Si)3SiSi[(o-OC6H4)3N] (9), (Me3Si)3SiSiMe2SiMe2Si(SiMe3)2Si[(o-OC6H4)3N] (11), and (Me3Si)3SiSi[(OC6H2Me2CH2)3N] (13) in reactions with (Me3Si)3SiK·THF (7) or (Me3Si)3SiK·[18-crown-6] (8). It was found that the nature of the (Me3Si)3SiK solvate determines the product of interaction, resulting in the formation of (Me3Si)3Si(CH2)4OSi[(OC6H2Me2CH2)3N] (12) or 13. Compounds obtained were characterized using multinuclear NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of 3, 9, and 11-13 were investigated by single-crystal X-ray analysis, featuring hypercoordinated Si atoms in a trigonal-bipyramidal coordination environment with O atoms in the equatorial plane. The structure of the side product [N(CH2C6H2Me2O)3Si]2O (6) was also studied, indicating highly tetrahedrally distorted trigonal-bipyramidal environment at the Si atoms, which was confirmed by crystal density functional theory calculations indicating the very weak Si ← N interaction. The Si···N interatomic distances span a broad range (2.23-2.78 Å). The dependence of structural and NMR parameters for hypercoordinated catenated compounds from the type of the ligand was established.

High charge-carrier mobility enables exploitation of carrier multiplication in quantum-dot films.

Project description:Carrier multiplication, the generation of multiple electron-hole pairs by a single photon, is of great interest for solar cells as it may enhance their photocurrent. This process has been shown to occur efficiently in colloidal quantum dots, however, harvesting of the generated multiple charges has proved difficult. Here we show that by tuning the charge-carrier mobility in quantum-dot films, carrier multiplication can be optimized and may show an efficiency as high as in colloidal dispersion. Our results are explained quantitatively by the competition between dissociation of multiple electron-hole pairs and Auger recombination. Above a mobility of ~1 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), all charges escape Auger recombination and are quantitatively converted to free charges, offering the prospect of cheap quantum-dot solar cells with efficiencies in excess of the Shockley-Queisser limit. In addition, we show that the threshold energy for carrier multiplication is reduced to twice the band gap of the quantum dots.

Direct acylation of carrier proteins with functionalized beta-lactones.

Project description:As the key component of many biosynthetic assemblies, acyl-carrier proteins offer a robust entry point for introduction of small molecule probes and pathway intermediates. Current labeling strategies primarily rely on modifications to the phosphopantetheine cofactor or its biosynthetic precursors followed by attachment to the apo form of a given carrier protein. As a greatly simplified alternative, direct and selective acylation of holo-acyl-carrier proteins using readily accessible beta-lactones as electrophilic partners for the phosphopantetheine-thiol has been demonstrated.

Polyurethane-functionalized starch nanocrystals as anti-tuberculosis drug carrier.

Project description:Studies related to loading ability and delivery of clinically used first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs (ATDs) such as isoniazid, rifampicin, pyrazinamide and streptomycin on the surface of starch-derived bulk and nanopolyurethanes (SBPUs and SNPUs) as drug delivery systems (DDS) have been focused to minimise or remove the drug-associated adverse effects. The efficiencies of nanopolyurethanes obtained from the differently substituted cyclic aliphatic and aromatic isocyanates have been studied for drug loading and release purposes. Different advanced instrumental techniques analysed the structural and morphological properties, thermal stability and crystallinity of the starch nanopolyurethans. Average particle sizes ranging from 27.35-42.38 nm to 126.89-218.60 nm for starch nanopolyurethans, SNPU3i and SNPU4i, respectively, were determined by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. Similarly, the loading efficiency of ATDs to the surfaces of SNPUs and SBPUs was observed in the range of 60-97% while ATDs-loaded SNPUs showed a sustainable release profile for all ATDs except for streptomycin. However, most SBPUs provided burst-release for all the above-mentioned ATDs in pH-dependent studies. The anti-tuberculosis assay against the Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv strain revealed that streptomycin-loaded SNPU4i and isoniazid-loaded SNPU7i are approximately 42 and 7 times more active than the native streptomycin and isoniazid, respectively.

Giant Enhancement of Carrier Mobility in Bimetallic Coordination Polymers.

Project description:Electrically conductive metal-organic coordination polymers (CPs) are promising candidates for a variety of technological applications. However, poor energetic and spatial overlap between the sp-electrons of organic ligands and the d-electrons of metal ion often blocks an effective charge transport (mobility) across CPs. Herein, we present a bimetallic design principle for enhancing carrier mobility in CPs. Bimetallic CPs of Fe(III) and Cr(III) ions coordinated to 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (BTC) ligand (Fe-BTC-Cr) exhibited remarkably high carrier mobility at the matching mole ratio (1:1) with enhancement factors of 102 and 104 in comparison to those of monometallic parents, Fe-BTC and Cr-BTC, respectively. The observation was substantiated by lowering of the band gap between the valence band and the conduction band upon the formation of a hybrid p-n-type structure in the bimetallic CPs. The direct current conductivity values of the CPs measured by four-probe technique were in good agreement with the alternating current conductivity values obtained from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Our flexible approach of picking and choosing the appropriate combination of metal ions from the periodic table is expected to generate various CPs with desirable semiconducting properties.

Charge carrier mobility in hybrid halide perovskites.

Project description:The charge transport properties of hybrid halide perovskites are investigated with a combination of density functional theory including van der Waals interaction and the Boltzmann theory for diffusive transport in the relaxation time approximation. We find the mobility of electrons to be in the range 5-10 cm(2)V(-1)s(-1) and that for holes within 1-5 cm(2)V(-1)s(-1), where the variations depend on the crystal structure investigated and the level of doping. Such results, in good agreement with recent experiments, set the relaxation time to about 1 ps, which is the time-scale for the molecular rotation at room temperature. For the room temperature tetragonal phase we explore two possible orientations of the organic cations and find that the mobility has a significant asymmetry depending on the direction of the current with respect to the molecular axis. This is due mostly to the way the PbI3 octahedral symmetry is broken. Interestingly we find that substituting I with Cl has minor effects on the mobilities. Our analysis suggests that the carrier mobility is probably not a key factor in determining the high solar-harvesting efficiency of this class of materials.

End-functionalized ROMP polymers for Biomedical Applications.

Project description:We present two novel allyl-based terminating agents that can be used to end-functionalize living polymer chains obtained by ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs' third generation catalyst. Both terminating agents can be easily synthesized and yield ROMP polymers with stable, storable activated ester groups at the chain-end. These end-functionalized ROMP polymers are attractive building blocks for advanced polymeric materials, especially in the biomedical field. Dye-labeling and surface-coupling of antimicrobially active polymers using these end-groups were demonstrated.

Rearrangement/Fragmentation Reactions of Oligosilanes with Aluminum Chloride.

Project description:Reinvestigation of the Lewis acid catalyzed rearrangement of some open-chain permethyloligosilanes with the Al(Fe)Cl(3) catalyst system exhibited several cases of additional reactivity: namely, a fragmentation/cyclization reaction. Introduction of (trimethylsilyl)methyl substituents into the oligosilane substrates strongly facilitated this reaction, yielding cyclic or bicyclic carbacyclosilanes. Investigations concerning the composition of the catalyst system indicated that the incorporation of about 0.1% FeCl(3) into the AlCl(3) lattice provided an effective catalyst.

Dispersion-Energy-Driven Wagner-Meerwein Rearrangements in Oligosilanes.

Project description:The installation of structural complex oligosilanes from linear starting materials by Lewis acid induced skeletal rearrangement reactions was studied under stable ion conditions. The produced cations were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy at low temperature, and the reaction course was studied by substitution experiments. The results of density functional theory calculations indicate the decisive role of attractive dispersion forces between neighboring trimethylsilyl groups for product formation in these rearrangement reactions. These attractive dispersion interactions control the course of Wagner-Meerwein rearrangements in oligosilanes, in contrast to the classical rearrangement in hydrocarbon systems, which are dominated by electronic substituent effects such as resonance and hyperconjugation.
