<i>Listeria monocytogenes</i> is a foodborne pathogen that causes septicemia, meningitis and chorioamnionitis and is associated with high mortality. Immunocompetent humans and animals, however, can tolerate high doses of <i>L. monocytogenes</i> without developing systemic disease.
