If no fertilization occurs at an appropriate time after ovulation, oocyte quality deteriorates rapidly as a process called postovulatory aging. Because the postovulatory aging of oocytes has detrimental effects on embryo development and offspring, many efforts have been made to prevent oocyte aging.
