Helically structured metal-organic frameworks fabricated by using supramolecular assemblies as templates.

ABSTRACT: The controlled formation of MOF-based superstructures with well-defined nanoscale sizes and exquisite morphologies represents a big challenge, but can trigger a new set of properties distinct from their bulk counterparts. Here we report on the use of a self-assembled organic object to template the first example of a nanoscale metal-organic framework (MOF) with a helical morphology. Two prototypical MOFs (HKUST-1 and MIL-100) were used to exemplify the growth of such materials on supramolecular assemblies. Interestingly, it was found that, dependent on the nature of the precursors, not only could well-defined helical MOF nanotubes be facilely fabricated, but novel helical bundle nanostructures could also be formed. These resultant MOF superstructures show additional optical properties and could be used as precursors for the preparation of chiral nanocarbons.

Coordination-bond-directed synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks from metal-organic frameworks as templates.

Project description:Controlled synthesis of hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) remains challenging, because the self-assembly of ligands is not only directed by weak hydrogen bonds, but also affected by other competing van der Waals forces. Herein, we demonstrate the coordination-bond-directed synthesis of HOFs using a preformed metal-organic framework (MOF) as the template. A MOF (CuI-TTFTB) based on two-coordinated CuI centers and tetrathiafulvalene-tetrabenzoate (TTFTB) ligands was initially synthesized. CuI-TTFTB was subsequently oxidized to the intermediate (CuII-TTFTB) and hydrated to the HOF product (TTFTB-HOF). Single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SC-SC) transformation was realized throughout the MOF-to-HOF transformation so that the evolution of structures was directly observed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The oxidation and hydration of the CuI center are critical to breaking the Cu-carboxylate bonds, while the synergic corbelled S⋯S and π⋯π interactions in the framework ensured stability of materials during post-synthetic modification. This work not only provided a strategy to guide the design and discovery of new HOFs, but also linked the research of MOFs and HOFs.

Extending supramolecular fullerene-porphyrin chemistry to pillared metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:Porphyrins and fullerenes are spontaneously attracted to each other. This supramolecular recognition element can be exploited to produce ordered arrays of interleaved porphyrins and fullerenes. C(60) x H(2)TpyP x Pb(NO(3))(2) x 1.5TCE (H(2)TpyP = tetra-4-pyridylporphyrin; TCE = 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane) crystallizes in the tetragonal P4/n space group and the structure has been solved to high resolution. The Pb(2+) ions connect the pyridylporphyrins in infinite sheets with an interlayer spacing of 12.1 A. The fullerenes are intercalated between these layers, acting as pillars. The 6:6 ring juncture bonds of C(60) are centered over the porphyrins, bringing the layers into strict tetragonal register. This arrangement identifies the fullerene-porphyrin interaction as a structure-defining element. The same motif is seen in a related ribbon structure having C(70) intercalated into HgI(2)-linked H(2)TpyTP. The supramolecular design principles involved in assembling these chromophores may have applications in materials science.

Stimuli-responsive metal-organic frameworks gated by pillar[5]arene supramolecular switches.

Project description:Spurred on by recent advances in materials chemistry and drug delivery, a new stimuli-responsive theranostic hybrid platform, based on mechanized monodisperse nano metal-organic frameworks (NMOFs) gated by carboxylatopillar[5]arene (CP5) switches with bio-friendly pH-triggered cargo release capabilities, has been constructed for the first time. This nanoscale smart cargo delivery system showed pH- and/or competitive binding agent-triggered controlled cargo release with negligible premature release, large pore sizes for drug encapsulation, low cytotoxicity, good biodegradability and biocompatibility, and potential application in cell imaging, which offers a new tool in targeted drug delivery and the controlled release of therapeutic agents.

Double role of metalloporphyrins in catalytic bioinspired supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs).

Project description:Heterogeneous catalysts are of great interest in many industrial processes for environmental reasons and, during recent years, a great effort has been devoted to obtain metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with improved catalytic behaviour. Few supramolecular metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) are stable under ambient conditions and those with anchored catalysts exhibit favourable properties. However, this paper presents an innovative approach that consists of using metal nodes as both structural synthons and catalysts. Regarding the latter, metalloporphyrins are suitable candidates to play both roles simultaneously. In fact, there are a number of papers that report coordination compounds based on metalloporphyrins exhibiting these features. Thus, the aim of this bioinspired work was to obtain stable SMOFs (at room temperature) based on metallo-porphyrins and explore their catalytic activity. This work reports the environmentally friendly microwave-assisted synthesis and characterization of the compound [H(bipy)]2[(MnTPPS)(H2O)2]·2bipy·14H2O (TPPS = meso-tetra-phenyl-porphine-4,4',4'',4'''-tetra-sulfonic acid and bipy = 4,4'-bi-pyridine). This compound is the first example of an MnTPPS-based SMOF, as far as we are aware, and has been structurally and thermally characterized through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetry and transmission electron microscopy. Additionally, this work explores not only the catalytic activity of this compound but also of the compounds μ-O-[FeTCPP]2·16DMF and [CoTPPS0.5(bipy)(H2O)2]·6H2O. The structural features of these supra-molecular materials, with accessible networks and high thermal stability, are responsible for their excellent behaviour as heterogeneous catalysts for different oxidation, condensation (aldol and Knoevenagel) and one-pot cascade reactions.

Reversible Atmospheric Water Harvesting Using Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The passive capture of clean water from humid air without reliance on bulky equipment and high energy has been a substantial challenge and has attracted significant interest as a potential environmentally friendly alternative to traditional water harvesting methods. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a high potential for this application due to their structural versatility which permits scalable, facile modulations of structural and functional elements. Although MOFs are promising materials for water harvesting, little research has been done to address the microstructure-adsorbing characteristics relationship with respect to the dynamic adsorption-desorption process. In this article, we present a parametric study of nine hydrolytically stable MOFs with diverse structures for unraveling fundamental material properties that govern the kinetics of water sequestration in this class of materials as well as investigating overall uptake capacity gravimetrically. The effects of temperature, relative humidity, and powder bed thickness on the adsorption-desorption process are explored for achieving optimal operational parameters. We found that Zr-MOF-808 can produce up to 8.66 LH2O kg-1MOF day-1, an extraordinary finding that outperforms any previously reported values for MOF-based systems. The presented findings help to deepen our understanding and guide the discovery of next-generation water harvesting materials.

Combined Cutaneous Therapy Using Biocompatible Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:Combined therapies emerge as an interesting tool to overcome limitations of traditional pharmacological treatments (efficiency, side effects). Among other materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer versatilities for the accommodation of multiple and complementary active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs): accessible large porosity, availability of functionalization sites, and biocompatibility. Here, we propose topical patches based on water-stable and biosafe Fe carboxylate MOFs (MIL-100 and MIL-127), the biopolymer polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and two co-encapsulated drugs used in skin disorders (azelaic acid (AzA) as antibiotic, and nicotinamide (Nic) as anti-inflammatory), in order to develop an advanced cutaneous combined therapy. Exceptional MOF drug contents were reached (total amount 77.4 and 48.1 wt.% for MIL-100 and MIL-127, respectively), while an almost complete release of both drugs was achieved after 24 h, adapted to cutaneous delivery. The prepared cutaneous PVA-MOF formulations are safe and maintain the high drug-loading capacity (total drug content of 38.8 and 24.2 wt.% for MIL-100 and MIL-127, respectively), while allowing a controlled delivery of their cargoes, permeating through the skin to the active target sites. The total amount of drug retained or diffused through the skin is within the range (Nic), or even better (AzA) than commercial formulations. The presented results make these drug combined formulations promising candidates for new cutaneous devices for skin treatment.

Retrofitting metal-organic frameworks.

Project description:The post-synthetic installation of linker molecules between open-metal sites (OMSs) and undercoordinated metal-nodes in a metal-organic framework (MOF) - retrofitting - has recently been discovered as a powerful tool to manipulate macroscopic properties such as the mechanical robustness and the thermal expansion behavior. So far, the choice of cross linkers (CLs) that are used in retrofitting experiments is based on qualitative considerations. Here, we present a low-cost computational framework that provides experimentalists with a tool for evaluating various CLs for retrofitting a given MOF system with OMSs. After applying our approach to the prototypical system CL@Cu3BTC2 (BTC?=?1,3,5-benzentricarboxylate) the methodology was expanded to NOTT-100 and NOTT-101 MOFs, identifying several promising CLs for future CL@NOTT-100 and CL@NOTT-101 retrofitting experiments. The developed model is easily adaptable to other MOFs with OMSs and is set-up to be used by experimentalists, providing a guideline for the synthesis of new retrofitted MOFs with modified physicochemical properties.

Distinguishing Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:We consider two metal-organic frameworks as identical if they share the same bond network respecting the atom types. An algorithm is presented that decides whether two metal-organic frameworks are the same. It is based on distinguishing structures by comparing a set of descriptors that is obtained from the bond network. We demonstrate our algorithm by analyzing the CoRe MOF database of DFT optimized structures with DDEC partial atomic charges using the program package ToposPro.

Reversible Thermal Conductivity Switching Using Flexible Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Project description:The ability to control thermal transport is critical for the design of thermal rectifiers, logic gates, and transistors, although it remains a challenge to design materials that exhibit large changes in thermal conductivity with switching ratios suitable for practical applications. Here, we propose the use of flexible metal-organic frameworks, which can undergo significant structural changes in response to various stimuli, to achieve tunable switchable thermal conductivity. In particular, we use molecular dynamics simulations to show that the thermal conductivity of the flexible framework Fe(bdp) (bdp2- = 1,4-benzenedipyrazolate) becomes highly anisotropic upon transitioning from the expanded to the collapsed phase, with the conductivity decreasing by nearly an order of magnitude along the direction of compression. Our results add to a small but growing number of studies investigating metal-organic frameworks for thermal transport.

Metal-Directed Design of Supramolecular Protein Assemblies.

Project description:Owing to their central roles in cellular signaling, construction, and biochemistry, protein-protein interactions (PPIs) and protein self-assembly have become a major focus of molecular design and synthetic biology. In order to circumvent the complexity of constructing extensive noncovalent interfaces, which are typically involved in natural PPIs and protein self-assembly, we have developed two design strategies, metal-directed protein self-assembly (MDPSA) and metal-templated interface redesign (MeTIR). These strategies, inspired by both the proposed evolutionary roles of metals and their prevalence in natural PPIs, take advantage of the favorable properties of metal coordination (bonding strength, directionality, and reversibility) to guide protein self-assembly with minimal design and engineering. Using a small, monomeric protein (cytochrome cb562) as a model building block, we employed MDPSA and MeTIR to create a diverse array of functional supramolecular architectures which range from structurally tunable oligomers to metalloprotein complexes that can properly self-assemble in living cells into novel metalloenzymes. The design principles and strategies outlined herein should be readily applicable to other protein systems with the goal of creating new PPIs and protein assemblies with structures and functions not yet produced by natural evolution.
