Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a common cause of cerebrovascular disease in childhood. Primary stroke prevention is effective using transcranial Doppler (TCD) scans to measure intracranial blood velocities, and regular blood transfusions or hydroxycarbamide when these are abnormal.
