The cytoskeletal GTPase FtsZ assembles at midcell, recruits the division machinery and directs envelope invagination for bacterial cytokinesis. ZapA, a conserved FtsZ-binding protein, promotes Z-ring stability and efficient division through a mechanism that is not fully understood.
