The RSV vaccine field suffered a major set-back when children were vaccinated with a formalin-inactivated RSV vaccine (FI-RSV). Unexpectedly, the vaccinated children fared worse than unvaccinated children when they were naturally infected with RSV. Mouse models were then developed that implicated the CD4<sup>+</sup> T helper cell population as a contributor to adverse events.
