2H-Dinaphthopentacene: A Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Core for Metal-Free Organic Sensitizers in Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

ABSTRACT: Continuous studies on the use of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon as the central block of an organic photosensitizer have brought forth a new opportunity toward efficiency enhancement of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In this paper, a nonacyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 9,19-dihydrodinaphtho[3,2,1-de:3',2',1'-op]pentacene, tethered with four 4-hexylphenyl solubilizing groups is reported. The novel chromophore 9,9-19-19-tetrakis(4-hexylphenyl)-9,19-dihydrodinaphtho[3,2,1-de:3',2',1'-op]pentacene is further functionalized with diarylamines and 4-(7-ethynylbenzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazol-4-yl)benzoic acid to produce two donor-acceptor (D-A) organic photosensitizers, achieving good power conversion efficiencies up to 10.2% in DSCs.

Tandem dye-sensitized solar cells achieve 12.89% efficiency using novel organic sensitizers.

Project description:This study presents a significant advancement in tandem dye-sensitized solar cells (T-DSSCs) through the strategic synthesis of novel triazatruxene (TAT) sensitizers MS-1 and MS-2. These organic sensitizers demonstrate exceptional light-harvesting capacity and overall performance, pushing the boundaries of power conversion efficiency (PCE) in DSSCs. The MS-1-based DSSCs achieved an impressive PCE of 12.81%, while MS-2 sensitizers reached a notable 10.92%. These efficiencies represent significant improvements over the conventional N719 dye (7.60%), demonstrating the potential of metal-free organic sensitizers in DSSC technology. The key to these noteworthy results lies in the molecular design of the organic sensitizers. The triazatruxene donor segment in the MS-1 and MS-2 dyes, featuring a rigid structure and efficient intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), proved to be a game-changer for photovoltaic properties. Building on these results, we explored an innovative parallel tandem cell (PT-DSSC) configuration. By connecting separate cells containing N719 and MS-1 sensitizers, we achieved a record efficiency of 12.89% with enhanced short-circuit current density (JSC) and open-circuit voltage (VOC)compared to single-dye cells. This study highlights the potential of molecular engineering in organic sensitizers and device optimization to enhance DSSC performance, paving the way for further advancements in solar cell technology.

Metal-free organic sensitizers for use in water-splitting dye-sensitized photoelectrochemical cells.

Project description:Solar fuel generation requires the efficient capture and conversion of visible light. In both natural and artificial systems, molecular sensitizers can be tuned to capture, convert, and transfer visible light energy. We demonstrate that a series of metal-free porphyrins can drive photoelectrochemical water splitting under broadband and red light (λ > 590 nm) illumination in a dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cell. We report the synthesis, spectral, and electrochemical properties of the sensitizers. Despite slow recombination of photoinjected electrons with oxidized porphyrins, photocurrents are low because of low injection yields and slow electron self-exchange between oxidized porphyrins. The free-base porphyrins are stable under conditions of water photoelectrolysis and in some cases photovoltages in excess of 1 V are observed.

New Oxindole-Bridged Acceptors for Organic Sensitizers: Substitution and Performance Studies in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:New D-π-A configured organic sensitizers featuring halogen-substituted oxindole-bridged acceptor units have been synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells applications. Among fluorine, bromine, and iodine substitution, the cell based on bromine incorporated dye exhibited the highest efficiency. The oxindoles in these sensitizers were found to assist the electron injection through the chelation of their amide carbonyl groups to the TiO2 surface. This study provides an alternate approach for future rational dye design to gain excellent DSSC performance.

Metal-free organic dyes for TiO2 and ZnO dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:We report the synthesis and characterization of new metal-free organic dyes (namely B18, BTD-R, and CPTD-R) which designed with D-π-A concept to extending the light absorption region by strong conjugation group of π-linker part and applied as light harvester in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We compared the photovoltaic performance of these dyes in two different photoanodes: a standard TiO2 mesoporous photoanode and a ZnO photoanode composed of hierarchically assembled nanostructures. The results demonstrated that B18 dye has better photovoltaic properties compared to other two dyes (BTD-R and CPTD-R) and each dye has higher current density (Jsc) when applied to hierarchical ZnO nanocrystallites than the standard TiO2 mesoporous film. Transient photocurrent and photovoltage decay measurements (TCD/TVD) were applied to systematically study the charge transport and recombination kinetics in these devices, showing the electron life time (τR) of B18 dye in ZnO and TiO2 based DSSCs is higher than CPTD-R and BTD-R based DSSCs, which is consistent with the photovoltaic performances. The conversion efficiency in ZnO based DSSCs can be further boosted by 35%, when a compact ZnO blocking layer (BL) is applied to inhibit electron back reaction.

Molecular Engineering of D-D-π-A-Based Organic Sensitizers for Enhanced Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Performance.

Project description:A series of molecularly engineered and novel dyes WS1, WS2, WS3, and WS4, based on the D35 donor, 1-(4-hexylphenyl)-2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole and 4-(4-hexylphenyl)-4H-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole as π-conjugating linkers, were synthesized and compared to the well-known LEG4 dye. The performance of the dyes was investigated in combination with an electrolyte based on Co(II/III) complexes as redox shuttles. The electron recombination between the redox mediators in the electrolyte and the TiO2 interface decreases upon the introduction of 4-hexylybenzene entities on the 2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrole and 4H-dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]pyrrole linker units, probably because of steric hindrance. The open circuit photovoltage of WS1-, WS2-, WS3-, and WS4-based devices in combination with the Co(II/III)-based electrolyte are consistently higher than those based on a I-/I3 - electrolyte by 105, 147, 167, and 75 mV, respectively. The WS3-based devices show the highest power conversion efficiency of 7.4% at AM 1.5 G 100 mW/cm2 illumination mainly attributable to the high open-circuit voltage (V OC).

Metal⁻Organic Framework Thin Film-Based Dye Sensitized Solar Cells with Enhanced Photocurrent.

Project description:Metal⁻organic framework thin film-based dye sensitized solar cell is fabricated with highly oriented, crystalline, and porous Zn-perylene metal-organic framework (MOF) thin film (SURMOF) which is integrated with Bodipy embedded in poly(methyl methacrylate). It has been demonstrated that the photocurrent can be enhanced by a factor of 5 relative to Zn-perylene MOF thin film due to triplet⁻triplet annihilation up-conversion between the Bodipy/PMMA sensitizer and the Zn-perylene MOF thin film acceptor using Co(bpy)₃2+/3+ as redox mediator.

A strategy to design novel structure photochromic sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:Two sensitizers with novel structure were designed and synthetized by introducing photochromic bisthienylethene (BTE) group into the conjugated system. Thanks to the photochromic effect the sensitizers have under ultraviolet and visible light, the conjugated bridge can be restructured and the resulting two photoisomers showed different behaviors in photovoltaic devices. This opens up a new research way for the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs).

Photoexcited Intramolecular Charge Transfer in Dye Sensitizers: Predictive In Silico Screening for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Devices.

Project description:Efficient photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) from donor to acceptor in dye molecules is the functional basis and key property in the working of a dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC). To understand the ICT process in photoexcited dye molecules, we analyze the electronic properties and structural parameters of a chosen set of experimentally synthesized donor-acceptor (D-A) and donor-π-spacer-acceptor (D-π-A) type dye molecules in their ground, excited, and cationic states. The correlation between structural modification and charge redistribution in different parts of the molecule helps to identify the extent of π-conjugation and spatial rearrangement of electron density localization along the molecular skeleton. We find that prominent twisting of several groups and the resulting molecular bond rearrangements in larger parts of the molecule promote efficient donor to acceptor ICT, such as in D-A type ADEKA1 and C275 dyes. Thus, based on the modest computation of structural and electronic properties of dye molecules in their respective ground, excited, and cationic states, we identify the desired structural changes that facilitate tunable intramolecular charge transfer to highlight a simple and direct prescription to screen out probable efficient dye molecules among many samples. Our approach complements recent experimental evidence of capturing the structural view of the excited-state charge transfer in molecules.

Steric Effects on the Photovoltaic Performance of Panchromatic Ruthenium Sensitizers for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells.

Project description:Three new heteroleptic Ru complexes, CYC-B22, CYC-B23C, and CYC-B23T, were prepared as sensitizers for coadsorbent-free, panchromatic, and efficient dye-sensitized solar cells. They are simultaneously functionalized with highly conjugated anchoring and ancillary ligands to explore the electronic and steric effects on their photovoltaic characteristics. The coadsorbent-free device based on CYC-B22 achieved the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.63% and a panchromatic response extending to 850 nm. The two stereoisomers, CYC-B23C and CYC-B23T coordinated with an unsymmetrical anchoring ligand, display similar absorption properties and the same driving forces for electron injection as well as dye regeneration. Nevertheless, the devices show not only the remarkably distinct PCE (6.64% vs 8.38%) but also discernible stability. The molecular simulation for the two stereoisomers adsorbed on TiO2 clarifies the distinguishable distances (16.9 Å vs 19.0 Å) between the sulfur atoms in the NCS ligands and the surface of the TiO2, dominating the charge recombination dynamics and iodine binding and therefore the PCE and stability of the devices. This study on the steric effects caused by the highly conjugated and unsymmetrical anchoring ligand on the adsorption geometry and photovoltaic performance of the dyes paves a new way for advancing the molecular design of polypyridyl metal complex sensitizers.

Theoretical design of porphyrin sensitizers with different acceptors for application in dye-sensitized solar cells.

Project description:Using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, three porphyrin dyes with different acceptors, such as carboxylic acid, cyanoacrylic acid, and 2-cyano-N-hydroxyacrylamide, have been designed. Compared to the best sensitizer (YD2-o-C8) so far, these designed dyes have small highest occupied orbital to lowest unoccupied orbital (HOMO-LUMO) band gaps, and wide absorptions with large oscillator strength at porphyrin Q bands. And the designed Dye1 is similar to YD2-o-C8 in electronic coupling with TiO2, while improved Dye2 and Dye3 are better than YD2-o-C8, thus, Dye2 and Dye3 will be much faster for electron injection in dye-sensitized solar cell systems based on their long-term stable and efficient anchor groups. All these features show that our designed dyes, especially Dye2 and Dye3, have better absorption performance and faster electron injection. In addition, our results point out that 2-cyano-N-hydroxyacrylamide is a new promising acceptor. This study is expected to assist the molecular design of new efficient dyes for the advancement of dye-sensitized solar cells.
