Hyaluronic acid (HA) and other glycosaminoglycans are extracellular matrix components in the human epidermis and dermis. One of the most prevalent skin microorganisms, <i>Propionibacterium acnes</i>, possesses HA-degrading activity, possibly conferred by the enzyme hyaluronate lyase (HYL).
