Craterispermum capitatum and C. gabonicum (Rubiaceae): two new species from the Lower Guinean and Congolian Domains.

ABSTRACT: Craterispermum capitatum and C. gabonicum, two new species of Rubiaceae, are described from the Lower Guinea and Congolian Domains. Detailed descriptions and distribution maps are provided for each species, their conservation status is assessed and their taxonomic affinities are discussed. Craterispermum gabonicum is unique within the genus because of the strong dimorphism in brevistylous and longistylous flowers and inflorescences. We hypothesize that this species shows some form of dioecy. The distribution of C. capitatum shows a wide disjunction: the species is present in the Lower Guinean and Congolian Domains but absent from Gabon and South Cameroon. An identification key for the Craterispermum species present in the Lower Guinean and Congolian Domains is given.

Project description:Garcinia has some 260 species and is often regarded as a genus with a difficult taxonomy. No recent treatment is available for the botanically rich Lower Guinea phytogeographical region. This study aims at partly filling this gap. First, several taxonomic problems are solved. Garcinia chromocarpa is reduced to a variety of Garcinia quadrifaria. Garcinia gnetoides and Garcinia granulata are both synonyms of Garcinia quadrifaria. Garcinia zenkeri is a synonym of Garcinia densivenia and lectotypes are being designated for both names. Garcinia brevipedicellata is a synonym of Garcinia afzelii, as is Garcinia antidysenterica for which a lectotype is designated. Second, two new species endemic to Gabon are described: Garcinia gabonensis Sosef & Dauby and Garcinia obliqua Sosef & Dauby. Finally, an identification key to all species present in the Lower Guinea region is provided. A few remaining West African species names could not be placed with certainty, because the type material was lost or not traced yet. One is a Rutaceae while the remaining three are provisionally to be regarded as synonyms of Garcinia smeathmannii.

Ophiorrhizashiqianensis (Rubiaceae), a new species from Guizhou, China.

Project description:A new species of the genus Ophiorrhiza L. (Rubiaceae), Ophiorrhizashiqianensis L.D.Duan & Yun Lin, is described, illustrated and photographed from Shiqian County, Guizhou Province, South-western China. This species was found growing at the side of streams in evergreen broad-leaved forests in mountains at elevations of 960-1100 m. The new species is morphologically similar to Ophiorrhizahunanica H.S.Lo, but differs from the latter by the glabrous, glabrescent or pilose stems, the 5-10 cm long subterranean stem internodes, the glabrous or pilose petioles, the 3-5 mm long stipules, the purple corolla lobes, the ca. 12 mm long style and included stigmas in long-styled flowers and the 3-4 × 8-10 mm, glabrous or glabrescent capsules.

Spiradiclislonganensis, a new species of Rubiaceae from China.

Project description:A new species of Spiradiclis (Rubiaceae) was found during our field trip to Guangxi, China, and is described here as Spiradiclislonganensis R. J. Wang. This species is readily distinguishable from other prostrate and decumbent species of the genus described previously by dense pubescence all over the plant, 5-20 small flowers per cymose, linear calyx lobes, and tubular corolla. The conservation status of VU was preliminarily assessed according to IUCN categories and criteria.

Ophiorrhiza monsvictoriae (Rubiaceae, Rubioideae), a new species from Myanmar.

Project description:A new species, Ophiorrhiza monsvictoriae S.S.Zhou & L.D.Duan, discovered at Natma Taung (Mt.Victoria) National Park, Chin State, Myanmar, is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to O. dulongensis, but differs from the latter by its stipules broadly triangular, 2-4 mm long, inflorescence axillary, 1-flowered, bracts lanceolate to subulate, 1-2 mm long, puberulous, calyx pilose, 1-2 mm long, lobes and tube equal length, corolla narrowly funnelform, 15 mm long, puberulous outside.

Chapelieriamagna, a new species of Rubiaceae from eastern Madagascar.

Project description:A new species of Chapelieria was discovered during a recent field trip to the Masoala National Park in eastern Madagascar, and is described here as Chapelieriamagna Kainul., sp. nov. This species is readily distinguishable from previously described species of the genus by its quadrangular shoots, triangular-calyptrate stipules, sessile leaves, pubescent styles, and ridged fruits. It also differs in the larger number of ovules and the much larger size of leaves and fruits.

Dietzsch, sp. nov., (Rubiaceae), a new species from Honduras, differs from the other Mesoamerican Sommera species by the combination of large, obovate leaves with long red petioles, glabrous or glabrate intervenal areas, red stipules, lax, sparsely pubescent inflorescences with red axes, flowers with red hypanthium and calyx, long fruiting pedicels, and dark red mature fruits. It is known only from the type locality in Cusuco National Park.

Chiococca grandiflora (Rubiaceae), a new species from Northern Mexico.

Project description:The new species Chiococca grandiflora Lorence & T.Van Devender from Sinaloa and Sonora, Mexico differs from its congeners by its larger, showy white flowers in compact cymes of 3-9, and infundibuliform corollas 16-20 mm long with tubes 13-17 mm long and lobes 3-3.5 mm long. Its distribution, habitat, and relationships are outlined. The conservation status for this species is estimated to be Endangered (EN) based on IUCN Red List Criteria.

Hedyotislongiramulis (Rubiaceae), a new species from south China.

Project description:Hedyotislongiramulissp. nov. (Rubiaceae) is described from Guangdong Province, China. It is similar to H.caudatifolia but differs in having puberulent, more or less tetragonal and decussately sulcate juvenile stems, waxy leaf surface, short inflorescence peduncles, high length ratio of corolla lobe to tube, and subglobose capsules. The phylogenetic analysis reveals that H.longiramulis is sister to H.pubirachis. Dimorphism concerning pollen size was observed in the heterostylous flowers. The complete chloroplast genome of the new species comprises a typical quadripartite structure of 153,616 bp in length, with two inverted repeats of 25,457 bp, a large single-copy of 85,050 bp and a small single-copy of 17,652 bp. It contains 112 unique genes, including 79 protein-coding genes, 29 tRNA genes, and four rRNA genes, the GC content of the chloroplast genome is 32.4%. The new species is provisionally evaluated as "Least Concern" because it is common and well-protected in two Provincial Nature Reserves.

Project description:Spiradicliskarstana, a new species of Spiradiclis (Rubiaceae) collected from Yunnan, China, is described for the first time. It is morphologically close to S.jingxiensis, but differs from the latter mainly by its inflorescences with 5-9 flowers, its 1.5-2.4 mm long peduncles, its stipules shorter than 1 mm and the 5-12 pairs of secondary veins. The conservation status is assessed as "Vulnerable" (VU) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Bio-Guided Isolation of Two New Hypoglycemic Triterpenoid Saponins from Polygonum capitatum.

Project description:PurposeDiabetes is a common disease caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, which was the top three diseases threatening human health. Therefore, it is necessary to seek more efficient hypoglycemic drugs. The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential hypoglycemic effects of compounds from Polygonum capitatum.Materials and methodsOur experiments were divided into three steps: (1) α-amylase test and oral starch tolerance test (OSTT) for screening the biological extract part of P. capitatum; (2) chemical isolation and identification using various separation techniques, and spectrum methods; and (3) evaluation of α-amylase inhibitory activity of isolates and in silico analysis for mechanism investigation.ResultsThe n-butanol fractioned part of P. capitatum was confirmed to be the biological part according to α-amylase test. Then, two new triterpenoid saponins were isolated from the n-butanol part, which were also the first isolated triterpenoid saponins from P. capitatum. The activities of compounds 1 and 2 against α-amylase were 51.9±2.8% and 38.1±2.2%, respectively, which was consistent with the molecular docking analysis. In which, 1 and 2 showed the binding affinity energy for α-amylase was -9.4 kcal/mol and -7.8 kcal/mol, respectively.ConclusionTwo new triterpenoid saponins were firstly isolated from P. capitatum, and displays potency as a hypoglycemic agent through blocking α-amylase.
