Project description:The Landau-Fermi liquid picture for quasiparticles assumes that charge carriers are dressed by many-body interactions, forming one of the fundamental theories of solids. Whether this picture still holds for a semimetal such as graphene at the neutrality point, i.e., when the chemical potential coincides with the Dirac point energy, is one of the long-standing puzzles in this field. Here we present such a study in quasi-freestanding graphene by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We see the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions go through substantial changes when the semimetallic regime is approached, including renormalizations due to strong electron-electron interactions with similarities to marginal Fermi liquid behavior. These findings set a new benchmark in our understanding of many-body physics in graphene and a variety of novel materials with Dirac fermions.

Project description:The nonadditive many-body interactions are significant for structural and thermodynamic properties of condensed phase systems. In this work we examined the many-body interaction energy of a large number of common organic/biochemical molecular clusters, which consist of 18 chemical species and cover nine common organic elements, using the Møller-Plesset perturbation theory to the second order (MP2) [ Møller et al. Phys. Rev. 1934 , 46 , 618 . ]. We evaluated the capability of Thole-based dipole induction models to capture the many-body interaction energy. Three models were compared: the original model and parameters used by the AMOEBA force field, a variation of this original model where the damping parameters have been reoptimized to MP2 data, and a third model where the damping function form applied to the permanent electric field is modified. Overall, we find the simple classical atomic dipole models are able to capture the 3- and 4-body interaction energy across a wide variety of organic molecules in various intermolecular configurations. With modified Thole models, it is possible to further improve the agreement with MP2 results. These models were also tested on systems containing metal/halogen ions to examine the accuracy and transferability. This work suggests that the form of damping function applied to the permanent electrostatic field strongly affects the distance dependence of polarization energy at short intermolecular separations.

Project description:In one-dimensional (1D) systems, electronic interactions lead to a breakdown of Fermi liquid theory and the formation of a Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid (TLL). The strength of its many-body correlations can be quantified by a single dimensionless parameter, the Luttinger parameter K, characterising the competition between the electrons' kinetic and electrostatic energies. Recently, signatures of a TLL have been reported for the topological edge states of quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulators, strictly 1D electronic structures with linear (Dirac) dispersion and spin-momentum locking. Here we show that the many-body interactions in such helical Luttinger Liquid can be effectively controlled by the edge state's dielectric environment. This is reflected in a tunability of the Luttinger parameter K, distinct on different edges of the crystal, and extracted to high accuracy from the statistics of tunnelling spectra at tens of tunnelling points. The interplay of topology and many-body correlations in 1D helical systems has been suggested as a potential avenue towards realising non-Abelian parafermions.

Project description:Because of their central importance in chemistry and biology, water molecules have been the subject of decades of intense spectroscopic investigations. Rotational spectroscopy of water vapor has yielded detailed information about the structure and dynamics of isolated water molecules, as well as water dimers and clusters. Nonlinear rotational spectroscopy in the terahertz regime has been developed recently to investigate the rotational dynamics of linear and symmetric-top molecules whose rotational energy levels are regularly spaced. However, it has not been applied to water or other lower-symmetry molecules with irregularly spaced levels. We report the use of recently developed two-dimensional (2D) terahertz rotational spectroscopy to observe high-order rotational coherences and correlations between rotational transitions that were previously unobservable. The results include two-quantum (2Q) peaks at frequencies that are shifted slightly from the sums of distinct rotational transitions on two different molecules. These results directly reveal the presence of previously unseen metastable water complexes with lifetimes of 100 ps or longer. Several such peaks observed at distinct 2Q frequencies indicate that the complexes have multiple preferred bimolecular geometries. Our results demonstrate the sensitivity of rotational correlations measured in 2D terahertz spectroscopy to molecular interactions and complexation in the gas phase.

Project description:The phase equilibria and invariant reactions in the system Al-Cu-Si were investigated by a combination of optical microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and electron probe micro analysis (EPMA). Isothermal phase equilibria were investigated within two isothermal sections. The isothermal section at 500 °C covers the whole ternary composition range and largely confirms the findings of previous phase diagram investigations. The isothermal section at 700 °C describes phase equilibria only in the complex Cu-rich part of the phase diagram. A new ternary compound τ was found in the region between (Al,Cu)-γ(1) and (Cu,Si)-γ and its solubility range was determined. The solubility of Al in κ-CuSi was found to be extremely high at 700 °C. In contrast, no ternary solubility in the β-phase of Cu-Al was found, although this phase is supposed to form a complete solid solution according to previous phase diagram assessments. Two isopleths, at 10 and 40 at.% Si, were investigated by means of DTA and a partial ternary reaction scheme (Scheil diagram) was constructed, based on the current work and the latest findings in the binary systems Al-Cu and Cu-Si. The current study shows that the high temperature equilibria in the Cu-rich corner are still poorly understood and additional studies in this area would be favorable.

Project description:Membrane-induced interactions play an important role in organizing membrane proteins. Measurements of the interactions between two and three membrane deforming objects have revealed their nonadditive nature. They are thought to lead to complex many-body effects, however, experimental evidence is lacking. We here present an experimental method to measure many-body effects in membrane-mediated interactions using colloidal spheres placed between a deflated giant unilamellar vesicles and a planar substrate. The confined colloidal particles cause a large deformation of the membrane while not being physicochemically attached to it and interact through it. Two particles attract with a maximum force of 0.2 pN. For three particles, compact equilateral triangles were preferred over linear arrangements. We use numerical energy minimization to establish that the attraction stems from a reduction in the membrane-deformation energy caused by the particles. Confining up to 36 particles, we find a preference for hexagonally close packed clusters. However, with increasing number of particles the order of the confined particles decreases, at the same time, diffusivity of the particles increases. Our experiments show that the nonadditive nature of membrane-mediated interactions affects the interactions and arrangements and ultimately leads to spherical aggregates with liquid-like order of potential importance for cellular processes.

Project description:The many-body dispersion (MBD) framework is a successful approach for modeling the long-range electronic correlation energy and optical response of systems with thousands of atoms. Inspired by field theory, here we develop a second-quantized MBD formalism (SQ-MBD) that recasts a system of atomic quantum Drude oscillators in a Fock-space representation. SQ-MBD provides: (i) tools for projecting observables (interaction energy, transition multipoles, polarizability tensors) on coarse-grained representations of the atomistic system ranging from single atoms to large structural motifs, (ii) a quantum-information framework to analyze correlations and (non)separability among fragments in a given molecular complex, and (iii) a path toward the applicability of the MBD framework to molecular complexes with even larger number of atoms. The SQ-MBD approach offers conceptual insights into quantum fluctuations in molecular systems and enables direct coupling of collective plasmon-like MBD degrees of freedom with arbitrary environments, providing a tractable computational framework to treat dispersion interactions and polarization response in intricate systems.

Project description:Despite its apparent simplicity, water displays unique behavior across the phase diagram which is strictly related to the ability of the water molecules to form dense, yet dynamic, hydrogen-bond networks that continually fluctuate in time and space. The competition between different local hydrogen-bonding environments has been hypothesized as a possible origin of the anomalous properties of liquid water. Through a systematic application of the many-body expansion of the total energy, we demonstrate that the local structure of liquid water at room temperature is determined by a delicate balance between two-body and three-body energies, which is further modulated by higher-order many-body effects. Besides providing fundamental insights into the structure of liquid water, this analysis also emphasizes that a correct representation of two-body and three-body energies requires sub-chemical accuracy that is nowadays only achieved by many-body models rigorously derived from the many-body expansion of the total energy, which thus hold great promise for shedding light on the molecular origin of the anomalous behavior of liquid water.

Project description:The Gibbs energy functions of the phases in the Al-Cu binary system are taken from the CALPHAD-type thermodynamic assessment (Witusiewicz et al., 2004; Ansara et al., 1998) [1], [2], where the effect of the monovacancy (Va), divacancy (VaVa) and Va-solute atom pair are taken into account based on the formulation (Abe et al., In press). The divacancy is modeled as an associate, VaVa, in the FCC solid solution. The contributions from the Va-solute pair are included through the ternary excess Gibbs energy term. Using the Gibbs energy functions provided in this data article, the fractions of the monovacancies and divacancies, even in various metastable conditions, can be calculated. Since the Gibbs energy functions and phase descriptions are written in the TDB (Thermodynamic DataBase) format, one can use this file with various thermodynamic software packages, such as OpenCalphad [3] etc.
