ABSTRACT: Herein, we report the complete genome sequence of the Staphylococcus Myoviridae phage pSco-10 infecting Staphylococcus cohnii The phage pSco-10 was isolated from duck feces collected from four farms in South Korea. The current report provides valuable information for genomic study of phages.

Complete genome sequence of Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophage GH15.

Project description:GH15 is a polyvalent phage that shows activity against a wide range of Staphylococcus aureus strains. In this work, the complete genome sequence of GH15 was determined. With a genome size of 139,806 bp (double-stranded DNA), GH15 is the largest staphylococcal phage sequenced to date. The complete genome encodes 214 open reading frames (ORFs) and 4 tRNAs. The closest relatives are the class III staphylococcal myobacteriophages, including K, A5W, ISP, Sb-1, and G1. Interestingly, although corresponding gene sequences demonstrate very high similarity, all the introns and inteins present in the phages listed above are absent in GH15. As such, GH15 can be considered phylogenetically unique among the staphylococcal myobacteriophages, indicating the diversity of this family.

Complete genome sequence of bacteriophage P26218 infecting Rhodoferax sp. strain IMCC26218.

Project description:Bacteriophage P26218 is a virus that thrives in freshwater and infects Rhodoferax sp. strain IMCC26218, both of which were isolated from Soyang Lake, Korea. The bacterial host, IMCC26218, belongs to the genus Rhodoferax and is closely related to R. saidenbachensis, with 98.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. Bacteriophage P26218 has an icosahedral head structure with a diameter of ~52 nm and short tail of ~9 nm, which is a typical morphology of the Podoviridae family. Its complete dsDNA genome was 36,315 bp with 56.7 % G?+?C content. This is the first genome sequence reported for a lytic phage of the genus Rhodoferax.

The Complete Genome Sequence of the Staphylococcus Bacteriophage Metroid.

Project description:Phages infecting bacteria of the genus Staphylococcus play an important role in their host's ecology and evolution. On one hand, horizontal gene transfer from phage can encourage the rapid adaptation of pathogenic Staphylococcus enabling them to escape host immunity or access novel environments. On the other hand, lytic phages are promising agents for the treatment of bacterial infections, especially those resistant to antibiotics. As part of an ongoing effort to gain novel insights into bacteriophage diversity, we characterized the complete genome of the Staphylococcus bacteriophage Metroid, a cluster C phage with a genome size of 151kb, encompassing 254 predicted protein-coding genes as well as 4 tRNAs. A comparative genomic analysis highlights strong similarities - including a conservation of the lysis cassette - with other Staphylococcus cluster C bacteriophages, several of which were previously characterized for therapeutic applications.

Complete genome sequence of bacteriophage BC-611 specifically infecting Enterococcus faecalis strain NP-10011.

Project description:Enterococcus faecalis is an opportunistic pathogen that causes serious infections in humans and animals and is also an important bacterium for dairy and probiotic supplement production. Therefore, bacteriophages infecting E. faecalis may be useful for phage therapy against multidrug-resistant strains or may threaten industrial fermentation. We isolated a virulent Siphoviridae bacteriophage, BC-611, specifically infecting E. faecalis strain NP-10011 but not infecting other E. faecalis strains or other enterococci. Although the genome sequence of BC-611 resembled that of enterococcal bacteriophage SAP6, BC-611 was marked by its narrow host specificity.
