We characterized the tension response of clathrin-mediated endocytosis by using various cell manipulation methodologies. Elevated tension in a cell hinders clathrin-mediated endocytosis through inhibition of <i>de novo</i> coat initiation, elongation of clathrin coat lifetimes and reduction of high-magnitude growth rates.
