Measurement and Correlation of the Thermal Conductivity of trans-1-Chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (R1233zd(E)).

ABSTRACT: New experimental data on the thermal conductivity of trans-1-chloro-3,3,3-trifluoropropene (R1233zd(E)) are reported that allow the development of wide-range correlations. These new experimental data, covering a temperature range of 204 K to 453 K at pressures from 0.1 MPa to 67 MPa, are used to develop a correlation for the thermal conductivity. The experimental data reported here have an uncertainty of (1 - 1.5) % for liquid measurements and for gas at pressures above 1 MPa, increasing to (3 - 4) % for gas at low pressures (less than 1 MPa) and near the gas-liquid critical point. Based on the uncertainty of and comparisons with the present data, the thermal-conductivity correlation for R1233zd(E) is estimated to have a relative expanded uncertainty ranging at a 95 % confidence level from 1 % to 4 % depending on the temperature and pressure, with larger uncertainties in the critical region.

Project description:New experimental data for the thermal conductivity of cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene (R-1336mzz(Z)) are reported for vapor, liquid and supercritical states. These data were obtained with transient hot-wire apparatus over the temperature range from 192 K to 498 K and at pressures from 0.05 MPa to 69 MPa. These data were used to develop a wide-range correlation for the thermal conductivity of the vapor, liquid, and supercritical fluid. The experimental data reported here have an uncertainty of 1 % for the liquid and supercritical regions (densities above 600 kg·m-3), 1.5 % for vapor and supercritical regions (pressures greater than or equal to 1 MPa and densities less than 200 kg·m-3), 3 % for supercritical states (densities between 200 kg·m-3 and 600 kg·m-3), and 3 % for vapor and supercritical states (pressures below 1 MPa). The thermal-conductivity correlation developed in this work is estimated to have an expanded relative uncertainty, at a 95 % confidence level, ranging from approximately 1.4 % to 4.2 % depending on the temperature and pressure, with larger uncertainties in the critical region.

Measurement and Correlation of the Thermal Conductivity of 1,1,1,2,2,4,5,5,5-Nonafluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-3-pentanone.

Project description:New experimental data for the thermal conductivity of 1,1,1,2,2,4,5,5,5-nonafluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)-3-pentanone (Novec 649) are reported for vapor, liquid and supercritical states. These new experimental data were obtained with transient hot-wire apparatus over the temperature range from 183 K to 501 K and at pressures from 0.02 MPa to 69 MPa. These data were used to develop a wide-range correlation for the thermal conductivity of the vapor, liquid and supercritical fluid. The experimental data reported here have an uncertainty of 1 % for the liquid and supercritical regions (densities > 600 kg m-3), 1.5 % for vapor and supercritical regions (pressures ≥ 1 MPa and densities < 200 kg m-3), 3 % for supercritical states (200 kg m-3 ≤ densities ≤ 600 kg m-3), and 3 % for vapor and supercritical states (pressures < 1 MPa). The thermal-conductivity correlation developed in this work is estimated to have an expanded relative uncertainty, at a 95 % confidence level, ranging from approximately 1 % to 4 % that depends upon the temperature and pressure, with larger uncertainties in the critical region.

High accuracy thermal conductivity measurement of aqueous cryoprotective agents and semi-rigid biological tissues using a microfabricated thermal sensor.

Project description:An improved thermal-needle approach for accurate and fast measurement of thermal conductivity of aqueous and soft biomaterials was developed using microfabricated thermal conductivity sensors. This microscopic measuring device was comprehensively characterized at temperatures from 0 °C to 40 °C. Despite the previous belief, system calibration constant was observed to be highly temperature-dependent. Dynamic thermal conductivity response during cooling (40 °C to -40 °C) was observed using the miniaturized single tip sensor for various concentrations of CPAs, i.e., glycerol, ethylene glycol and dimethyl sulfoxide. Chicken breast, chicken skin, porcine limb, and bovine liver were assayed to investigate the effect of anatomical heterogeneity on thermal conductivity using the arrayed multi-tip sensor at 20 °C. Experimental results revealed distinctive differences in localized thermal conductivity, which suggests the use of approximated or constant property values is expected to bring about results with largely inflated uncertainties when investigating bio-heat transfer mechanisms and/or performing sophisticated thermal modeling with complex biological tissues. Overall, the presented micro thermal sensor with automated data analysis algorithm is a promising approach for direct thermal conductivity measurement of aqueous solutions and soft biomaterials and is of great value to cryopreservation of tissues, hyperthermia or cryogenic, and other thermal-based clinical diagnostics and treatments.

Thermoelectric materials by using two-dimensional materials with negative correlation between electrical and thermal conductivity.

Project description:In general, in thermoelectric materials the electrical conductivity ? and thermal conductivity ? are related and thus cannot be controlled independently. Previously, to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit in state-of-the-art materials, differences in relative scaling between ? and ? as dimensions are reduced to approach the nanoscale were utilized. Here we present an approach to thermoelectric materials using tin disulfide, SnS2, nanosheets that demonstrated a negative correlation between ? and ?. In other words, as the thickness of SnS2 decreased, ? increased whereas ? decreased. This approach leads to a thermoelectric figure of merit increase to 0.13 at 300?K, a factor ?1,000 times greater than previously reported bulk single-crystal SnS2. The Seebeck coefficient obtained for our two-dimensional SnS2 nanosheets was 34.7?mV?K(-1) for 16-nm-thick samples at 300?K.

Conductivity-limiting bipolar thermal conductivity in semiconductors.

Project description:Intriguing experimental results raised the question about the fundamental mechanisms governing the electron-hole coupling induced bipolar thermal conduction in semiconductors. Our combined theoretical analysis and experimental measurements show that in semiconductors bipolar thermal transport is in general a "conductivity-limiting" phenomenon, and it is thus controlled by the carrier mobility ratio and by the minority carrier partial electrical conductivity for the intrinsic and extrinsic cases, respectively. Our numerical method quantifies the role of electronic band structure and carrier scattering mechanisms. We have successfully demonstrated bipolar thermal conductivity reduction in doped semiconductors via electronic band structure modulation and/or preferential minority carrier scatterings. We expect this study to be beneficial to the current interests in optimizing thermoelectric properties of narrow gap semiconductors.

Enhanced Electron Correlation and Significantly Suppressed Thermal Conductivity in Dirac Nodal-Line Metal Nanowires by Chemical Doping.

Project description:Enhancing electron correlation in a weakly interacting topological system has great potential to promote correlated topological states of matter with extraordinary quantum properties. Here, the enhancement of electron correlation in a prototypical topological metal, namely iridium dioxide (IrO2 ), via doping with 3d transition metal vanadium is demonstrated. Single-crystalline vanadium-doped IrO2 nanowires are synthesized through chemical vapor deposition where the nanowire yield and morphology are improved by creating rough surfaces on substrates. Vanadium doping leads to a dramatic decrease in Raman intensity without notable peak broadening, signifying the enhancement of electron correlation. The enhanced electron correlation is further evidenced by transport studies where the electrical resistivity is greatly increased and follows an unusual T$\sqrt T $ dependence on the temperature (T). The lattice thermal conductivity is suppressed by an order of magnitude via doping even at room temperature where phonon-impurity scattering becomes less important. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the remarkable reduction of thermal conductivity arises from the complex phonon dispersion and reduced energy gap between phonon branches, which greatly enhances phase space for phonon-phonon Umklapp scattering. This work demonstrates a unique system combining 3d and 5d transition metals in isostructural materials to enrich the system with various types of interactions.

Thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of fullerene-based nanofluids.

Project description:Owing to their outstanding characteristics, carbon based nanofluids (CbNFs) have been applied to various advanced heat transfer and cooling technologies. It was claimed that these CbNFs can considerably improve the properties of the base working fluids. Among all the thermal characteristics, the thermal conductivity (λ) is regarded as the primary parameter to be considered for the application of nanofluids (NFs). In the present research study we measured for the first time both λ and thermal diffusivity (aT) of very stable fullerene (C60)-based NFs in liquid phase (1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene and 1,2-dicholorobenzene) by the transient multi-current hot wire technique at atmospheric pressure in a wide range of temperature (254-323 K). Similar to the base liquids (BLs), we observed a slight decrease in λ with an increase in temperature. Additionally, compared to the BLs λ was reduced upon the addition of C60. The results were compared with the predicted ones using different theoretical models. Not much variation in aT was observed between the C60 NFs and the corresponding BLs due partly to the small variation of λ with the addition of C60.

Steady heat conduction-based thermal conductivity measurement of single walled carbon nanotubes thin film using a micropipette thermal sensor.

Project description:In this paper, we describe the thermal conductivity measurement of single-walled carbon nanotubes thin film using a laser point source-based steady state heat conduction method. A high precision micropipette thermal sensor fabricated with a sensing tip size varying from 2 μm to 5 μm and capable of measuring thermal fluctuation with resolution of ±0.01 K was used to measure the temperature gradient across the suspended carbon nanotubes (CNT) film with a thickness of 100 nm. We used a steady heat conduction model to correlate the temperature gradient to the thermal conductivity of the film. We measured the average thermal conductivity of CNT film as 74.3 ± 7.9 W m(-1) K(-1) at room temperature.

Effect of Electrical Contact Resistance on Measurement of Thermal Conductivity and Wiedemann-Franz Law for Individual Metallic Nanowires.

Project description:The electrical and thermal properties of metallic nanostructures have attracted considerable fundamental and technological interests. Recent studies confirmed a dramatic decrease in the electrical and thermal conductivities when the dimension is comparable or even smaller than the electron mean free path. However, the verification of the Wiedemann-Franz law in these nanostructures remains hotly debated. The Lorenz number obtained from the two-probe measurement is found to be much larger than that from the four-probe measurement. Here, we reported the electrical and thermal properties of the individual silver nanowires measured by the two-probe and four-probe configurations. The measured electrical contact resistance is found to be nearly temperature-independent, indicating a ballistic-dominant electronic transport at the contacts. When the effect of thermal contact resistance is diminished, the Lorenz number measured by the four-probe configuration is comparable to the Sommerfeld value, verifying that the Wiedemann-Franz law holds in the monocrystalline-like silver nanowire. Comparatively, the derived electrical conductivity becomes smaller and the thermal conductivity becomes larger in the two-probe measurement, confirming that the electrical contact resistance will introduce a large error. The present study experimentally demonstrates a reasonable explanation to the discouragingly broad span in the Lorenz number obtained from different metallic nanostructures.

Thermal Diffusivity and Conductivity of Polyolefins by Thermal Lens Technique.

Project description:A mode-mismatched thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) technique, in a pump-probe two-laser-beam configuration, was employed for the experimental determination of the thermal properties of four selected well-characterized polyolefin homopolymer films. We investigated the thermal diffusivity (D) and thermal conductivity (κ) of high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, linear low-density polyethylene, and polypropylene. We also measured the structural properties (i.e., average molecular weight, polydispersity index, branching number), along with the rheological and thermal properties (i.e., melting point, specific heat capacity Cp, degree of crystallinity) of samples by high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (HT-GPC), rheometric mechanical spectrometry (RMS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and densitometry. The relationship between microstructural properties such as degree of crystallinity, D, and κ was investigated. The results show that there is good correlation between the degree of crystallinity and D. The TL technique enables measurement of D in semitransparent thin films within an uncertainty of 4%.
