In yeast, heterochromatin silencing is reported to decline in aging mother cells, causing sterility in old cells. This process is thought to reflect a decrease in the activity of the NAD<sup>+</sup> (oxidized nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide)-dependent deacetylase Sir2.
