Facile synthesis of silver/silver thiocyanate (Ag@AgSCN) plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance.

ABSTRACT: A nanostructured plasmonic photocatalyst, silver/silver thiocyanate (Ag@AgSCN), has been prepared by a simple precipitation method followed by UV-light-induced reduction. The ratio of Ag to silver thiocyanate (AgSCN) can be controlled by simply adjusting the photo-induced reduction time. The formation mechanism of the product was investigated based on the time-dependent experiments. Further experiments indicated that the prepared Ag@AgSCN nanostructures with an atomic ratio of Ag/AgSCN = 0.0463 exhibited high photocatalytic activity and long-term stability for the degradation of oxytetracycline (84%) under visible-light irradiation. In addition to the microstructure and high specific surface area, the enhanced photocatalytic activity was mainly caused by the surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles, and the high stability of AgSCN resulted in the long-term stability of the photocatalyst product.

One-Step Synthesis of Ag@TiO? Nanoparticles for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance.

Project description:Polyamide network polymers (PNP) modified TiO? nanoparticles (NPs) were decorated with Ag NPs in hydrothermal gel method, forming one-step synthesized photocatalysts, Ag@TiO? NPs. The effect of PNP and the amount of Ag NPs added were investigated in this work. PNP acted as a nanocage to prevent TiO? aggregation and capture Ag accurately, which could effectively control product sizes and improve dispersibility in solvents. Simultaneously, TiO? NPs modified with Ag NPs exhibited remarkable photocatalytic effects. One-step synthesis simplified the experimental process and avoided the agglomeration of silver ions during the secondary reaction, achieving the purpose of uniform distribution at a specific location of TiO? NPs. The prepared Ag@TiO? NPs-0.5 could remove 79.49% of Methyl Orange (MO) after 3 h of ultraviolet light irradiation, which was 2.7 times higher than the reaction rate of pure TiO? NPs. It also exhibited good photoactivity under Visible light conditions. Moreover, the mineralization rate of MO over the Ag@TiO2 NPs-0.5 could be up to 72.32% under UV light and 47.08% under Visible light irradiation, which revealed that the prepared catalysts could effectively degrade most of the MO to CO? and H?O. The samples also demonstrated the excellent stability and easy recyclability with over 90% of the original catalytic level for MO degradation. The photocatalysts studied also exerted broad application prospects such as photovoltaic hydrogen production, electronic sensors and biomedicine.

Plasmonic enhanced photocatalytic activity of Ag/TiO2 tube-in-tube fibers.

Project description:Ag nanoparticle was found to significantly enhance the photocatalytic activity of self-organized TiO2 nanotube structures. Herein, novel Ag/TiO2 tube-in-tube fibers have been prepared by a facile electrospinning technology and calcination process. Employed as the photocatalyst, the composite could efficiently catalyze the photodegradation of the model organic pollutant, rhodamine B under visible light irradiation, exhibiting a superior photocatalytic activity than the undoped TiO2 tube-in-tube fibers. This enhanced activity has been ascribed to plasmonic characteristics of Ag nanoparticles, which promote the light absorption and charge transfer feasibility. The simple, low-cost and green fabrication route of the composite provides a novel means for preparing similar materials, holding great promise for wider application in the future.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures.

Project description:We studied the photocatalytic properties of rational designed TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures, which were fabricated by the site-specific deposition of amorphous TiO2 on the tips of ZnO nanorods. Compared with the pure components of ZnO nanorods and amorphous TiO2 nanoparticles, these TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures demonstrated a higher catalytic activity. The strong green emission quenching observed from photoluminescence of TiO2-ZnO hybrid nanostructures implied an enhanced charge transfer/separation process resulting from the novel type II heterostructures with fine interfaces. The catalytic performance of annealing products with different TiO2 phase varied with the annealing temperatures. This is attributed to the combinational changes in Eg of the TiO2 phase, the specific surface area and the quantity of surface hydroxyl groups.

Hierarchical Assembly of SnO2/ZnO Nanostructures for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance.

Project description:SnO2/ZnO hierarchical heterostructures have been successfully synthesized by combining electrospinning technique and hydrothermal method. Various morphologies of the secondary ZnO nanostructures including nanorods (NRs) and nanosheets (NSs) can be tailored by adding surfactants. Photocatalytic performance of the heterostructures was investigated and obvious enhancement was demonstrated in degradation of the organic pollutant, compared to the primary SnO2-based nanofibers (NFs) and bare ZnO. Furthermore, it was found that the H2 evolution from water splitting was achieved by photocatalysis of heterostructured nanocomposites after sulfurization treatment. This synthetic methodology described herein promises to be an effective approach for fabricating variety of nanostructures for enhanced catalytic applications. The heterostructured nanomaterials have considerable potential to address the environmental and energy issues via degradation of pollutant and generation of clean H2 fuel.

Largely enhanced single-molecule fluorescence in plasmonic nanogaps formed by hybrid silver nanostructures.

Project description:It has been suggested that narrow gaps between metallic nanostructures can be practical for producing large field enhancement. We design a hybrid silver nanostructure geometry in which fluorescent emitters are sandwiched between silver nanoparticles and silver island film (SIF). A desired number of polyelectrolyte layers are deposited on the SIF surface before the self-assembly of a second silver nanoparticle layer. Layer-by-layer configuration provides a well-defined dye position. It allows us to study the photophyical behaviors of fluorophores in the resulting gap at the single molecule level. The enhancement factor of a fluorophore located in the gap is much higher than those on silver surfaces alone and on glass. These effects may be used for increased detectability of single molecules bound to surfaces which contain metallic structures for either biophysical studies or high sensitivity assays.

The Facile Synthesis of Branch-Trunk Ag Hierarchical Nanostructures and Their Applications for High-Performance H?O? Electrochemical Sensors.

Project description:A novel branch-trunk Ag hierarchical nanostructure was synthesized via a galvanic replacement reaction combined with microwave-assisted synthesis using Te nanowire as a sacrificial template. The Te nanowire was synthesized via a hydrothermal process. We further investigated the potential application of the obtained hierarchical nanostructures in electrochemical sensor analysis. The results showed that the as-prepared sensor exhibited a wide linear range with 0.05 µM to 1.925 mM (R = 0.998) and the detection limit was estimated to be 0.013 µM (S/N = 3). These results indicate the branch-truck Ag hierarchical nanostructures are an excellent candidate material for sensing applications.

Facile Green Synthesis of BiOBr Nanostructures with Superior Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity.

Project description:Novel green bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr-G) nanoflowers were successfully synthesized via facile hydrolysis route using an Azadirachta indica (Neem plant) leaf extract and concurrently, without the leaf extract (BiOBr-C). The Azadirachta indica leaf extract was employed as a sensitizer and stabilizer for BiOBr-G, which significantly expanded the optical window and boosted the formation of photogenerated charge carriers and transfer over the BiOBr-G surface. The photocatalytic performance of both samples was investigated for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and phenol (Ph) under the irradiation of visible light. The leaf extract mediated BiOBr-G photocatalyst displayed significantly higher photocatalytic activity when compared to BiOBr-C for the degradation of both pollutants. The degradation rate of MO and Ph by BiOBr-G was found to be nearly 23% and 16% more when compared to BiOBr-C under visible light irradiation, respectively. The substantial increase in the photocatalytic performance of BiOBr-G was ascribed to the multiple synergistic effects between the efficient solar energy harvesting, narrower band gap, high specific surface area, porosity, and effective charge separation. Furthermore, BiOBr-G displayed high stability for five cycles of photocatalytic activity, which endows its practical application as a green photocatalyst in the long run.

Nd-Doped ZnO Nanostructures with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance for Environmental Protection.

Project description:Neodymium (Nd)-doped ZnO nanostructures with different amounts of Nd were obtained by the electrospinning-calcination method. X-ray diffraction measurements indicated that the prepared nanostructures have a wurtzite structure without undesirable impurities. Nd doping changes the mean crystallite size as well the lattice strain, as proved by Williamson-Hall plots. The ZnO-based nanostructures were tested as photocatalysts for methylene blue (MB) dye and ciprofloxacin (CIP) drug pollutant degradations under visible light irradiation. Corroborating the obtained results, it was found that the reaction rate constant increased almost linearly with the mean crystallite size (from 2.235 × 10-2 to 3.482 × 10-2 min-1) with a variation in the mean crystallite size from 24.2 to 42.1 nm. Furthermore, the best catalyst sample (0.1% Nd-doped ZnO) was used to optimize the photodegradation process of ciprofloxacin, taking into account the pollutant concentration as well as the catalyst dose. The removal efficiency after 120 min was about 100%, with the rate constant of k = 5.291·10-2 min-1 (CIP) and k = 4.780·10-2 min-1 (MB) for the established optimal conditions. Considering the value of the rate constant, the half-life of the reaction (τ1/2 = ln2/k) was evaluated to be about τ1/2 =13 min for CIP and 14.5 min corresponding to MB. Several catalytic cycles were successfully performed without any loss of photocatalytic activity using these nanostructures, demonstrating that the obtained nanostructures have good stability in the leaching processes.

Enhanced Sensitivity of Delocalized Plasmonic Nanostructures.

Project description:This work reports on the observation of a delocalized surface plasmon resonance (DSPR) phenomenon in linear chains of square-shaped silver nanoparticles (NP) as a function of the chain length and the distance between the nanoparticles in the chain. Transmission spectra of the silver nanoparticle chains reveal the emergence of new, red-shifted extinction peaks that depend strongly on the spacing between the nanoparticles and the polarization of the exciting light with respect to the chain axis. As the spacing between the nanoparticles in the linear chain decreases and the number of nanoparticles in the linear chain increases, the strength of the new extinction features increase strongly. These changes can be described by a tight-binding model for the coupled chain, which indicates that the origin of the phenomenon is consistent with an increased coupling between the nanoparticles. FDTD calculations reveal that the electric field is strongly enhanced between the nanoparticles in the chain. The DSPR response is found to be much more sensitive to dielectric changes than the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR).

Plasmonic Metamaterial Ag Nanostructures on a Mirror for Colorimetric Sensing.

Project description:In this study, we demonstrate the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) in the visible range by using nanostructures on mirrors. The nanohemisphere-on-mirror (NHoM) structure is based on random nanoparticles that were obtained by heat-treating silver thin films and does not require any top-down nanofabrication processes. We were able to successfully tune over a wide wavelength range and obtain full colors using the NHoM structures, which realized full coverage of the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) standard RGB (sRGB) color space. Additionally, we fabricated the periodic nanodisk-on-glass (NDoG) structure using electron beam lithography and compared it with the NHoM structure. Our analysis of dark-field microscopic images observed by a hyperspectral camera showed that the NHoM structure had less variation in the resonant wavelength by observation points compared with the periodic NDoG structure. In other words, the NHoM structure achieved a high color quality that is comparable to the periodic structure. Finally, we proposed colorimetric sensing as an application of the NHoM structure. We confirmed the significant improvement in performance of colorimetric sensing using the NHoM structure and succeeded in colorimetric sensing using protein drops. The ability to fabricate large areas in full color easily and inexpensively with our proposed structures makes them suitable for industrial applications, such as displays, holograms, biosensing, and security applications.
