Project SARET: An interprofessional education (IPE) lens examines substance use disorders research education for health professional students.

ABSTRACT: The NIDA funded Substance Abuse Education, Research and Training (SARET) Program addresses the compelling need for health professionals prepared to engage in substance use disorders (SUD) research. The goal of this interprofessional project, structured by an Executive Committee of co-investigators from the disciplines of medicine, nursing, social work and dentistry, is to increase the skills of students from each discipline for interprofessional research collaboration and early career-development opportunities in SUD research. The development of web-based modules, interprofessional seminars and a model mentorship program were designed as well, for dissemination and evaluation by other health professional schools. The educational format is 6 interactive web-based learning modules, providing an overview of core content on Substance Use Disorders (SUD), summer or year-long mentored research experiences with NIH-funded researchers and small interprofessional seminars and site visits. Assessment consists of self-reported annual student learning outcomes and external editorial and advisory board project and curricular materials review. These reviews encourages the updating of materials and provide flexibility for participating "champions" at other schools who use the modules. Quantitative and qualitative outcomes of student research activities and data on dissemination of modules support the fit between project content and interprofessional teaching modalities. The learning modules are available without charge to individuals, students, faculty or health professional programs from the project's website.

Project description:BackgroundDigital interventions have been identified as a possible tool for reducing the harm caused by illicit drug use among students attending higher education (ie, college students). However, the success of interventions in this area has been hampered by a lack of user involvement and behavior change theory in their design. The My Understanding of Substance use Experiences (MyUSE) project combines a rigorous user-centered design (UCD) methodology and a robust behavioral change framework to develop a digitally delivered harm reduction intervention for illicit drug use among students in higher education.ObjectiveThis project aims to design and develop a digital intervention that targets drug use-related harm among students in higher education.MethodsThe MyUSE project will take place over 3 phases. The first phase was exploratory in nature, involving 3 systematic reviews, a large survey, and student workshops to gather a comprehensive evidence base to guide the project. The second phase is the development stage of the project, involving the use of the Behavior Change Wheel theoretical framework to determine the behavior change techniques of the intervention and the use of the UCD methodology to guide the development of the digital intervention. The third phase is the evaluation stage, whereby the intervention will undergo a 5-stage evaluation process to comprehensively evaluate its impacts.ResultsThe exploratory phase 1 of the MyUSE project was completed in December 2018. Phase 2 is currently underway, and phase 3 is due to begin in September 2020.ConclusionsHigher education institutions (HEIs) are ideally placed to intervene and support students in the area of illicit drug use but are constrained by limited resources. Current digital interventions in this area are sparse and have several weaknesses. Project description:BackgroundPrimary healthcare in Sweden and worldwide has a diverse structure with many kinds of healthcare units involved. This is a challenge for collaboration between different professions in primary healthcare, as the different healthcare professions often work in silos. Interprofessional education (IPE) in the context of primary healthcare is less studied than IPE at hospitals and most of the studies in primary healthcare have focused on collaboration between general practitioners and nurses. The aim of this study was to describe how healthcare students perceived conditions for IPE in primary healthcare.MethodsQualitative group interviews were used and a total of 26 students, recruited on a voluntary basis participated in four group interviews with students mixed from study programmes in nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and medicine. Students from the study programme in medicine were in their second to eleventh semesters of 11 semesters in total, whilst students from the occupational therapist, physiotherapist and nursing programmes were in their fourth to sixth of six semesters in total.ResultsOur findings indicated one theme: Students perceived a need for support and awareness of IPE from both study programmes and clinical placements. Five categories were found to belong to the theme. Students' tunnel-vision focus on their own profession may have affected their ability to collaborate with students from other professions. The nature of the patients' healthcare problems decided if they were perceived as suitable for IPE. Clinical supervisors' support for and attitude towards IPE were important. The hierarchy between different professions was perceived as a hindrance for seeking help from the other professions. The students asked for more collaboration between different study programmes, in order to gain knowledge about the roles and responsibilities of the other professions.ConclusionsIn conclusion, students in this study considered it essential for different study programmes and clinical placements to be more aware of the opportunities for and importance of IPE. The study identified conditions that were required for IPE in primary healthcare that may be helpful for healthcare teachers and clinical supervisors to better understand how students perceive IPE in primary healthcare, thus facilitating the planning of IPE.
