Interprofessional education faculty development survey: Perspectives on IPE and collaborative practice and COVID-19.

ABSTRACT: The cancellation of in-person classes in March 2020 due to COVID-19 caused a sudden shift in the educational experiences of health profession students enrolled at the University of Michigan (U-M). With the move to remote learning, educators engaging in interprofessional education (IPE) were faced with the challenge of preparing students for interprofessional collaboration from a distance. A survey was designed to investigate the impact of the pandemic on IPE practices and discover educator development needs. Faculty and staff from 10 health sciences schools within the U-M and Michigan Medicine were invited to complete a survey investigating their use of IPE competencies prior to, during, and after the pandemic; their development needs; and their ideas for future implementation of IPE and collaborative practice. Fifty-six percent of respondents reported their ability to teach IPE competencies was impacted by changes related to COVID. There was a significant (p ≤ 0.001) difference between self-report of incorporating IPE competencies prior to and during pandemic and during and into the future across all five competencies. Technology was reported as a challenge when teaching IPE, and a need for future faculty development. Leveraging virtual and case-based learning and increasing collaboration between schools were identified as ideas for future implementation.

Project description:BackgroundStudent interprofessional education (IPE) societies or organizations are popular ways to support pre-registration health professions students to develop the understanding and skills needed for collaborative working. Our experience with the University of Birmingham Knowledge and Skills Exchange (KASE) is that, whilst such societies can be excellent vehicles for IPE, sustaining them can be challenging; and that consistent faculty support, adequate resource and a focus for society activities are needed for them to flourish. Whilst the longer term impact of pre-registration IPE has been demonstrated, less is known about the influence of student IPE society membership on participants' subsequent professional practice. To inform institutional decisions about establishing and maintaining a student IPE society, we have investigated the perceptions of early career health professionals who were KASE members during their pre-registration training.MethodsKASE alumni working as early career health professionals were invited to participate in the study. Their perceptions of the influence of KASE on their transition to practice and experience as early career health professionals were explored through online semi-structured interviews and interview transcripts analyzed thematically. Resulting themes were reviewed for relevance to the University of Birmingham (UK) IPE Framework, which uses the competency domains of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative Competency Framework as the required learning outcomes for IPE at Birmingham.ResultsEight interviews with former KASE members were conducted between November 2022 and March 2023. Interviewees had between 2 and 5 years of experience in their professional role. Six themes relating to the influence of KASE on their subsequent professional practice were identified: interprofessional communication, teamworking, patient-centered care, leadership and organizational skills, confidence and resilience. Three of these themes related to required IPE learning outcomes. Two further themes: time to build relationships; and informality and autonomy, suggested possible reasons for such influence.ConclusionEarly career health professionals considered that participation in the KASE student IPE society helped their transition into the healthcare work environment and encouraged them to adopt a more collaborative and patient-centered approach. Benefits reported suggest that faculty support for institutional student IPE societies is worthy of consideration.

Project description:BackgroundFaculty development is important for advancing teaching practice in health professions education. However, little is known regarding how faculty development outcomes are achieved and how change in practice may happen through these activities. In this study, we explored how clinical educators integrated educational innovations, developed within a faculty development programme, into their clinical workplaces. Thus, the study seeks to widen the understanding of how change following faculty development unfolds in clinical systems.MethodsThe study was inspired by case study design and used a longitudinal faculty development programme as a case offering an opportunity to study how participants in faculty development work with change in practice. The study applied activity theory and its concept of activity systems in a thematic analysis of focus group interviews with 14 programme attendees. Participants represented two teaching hospitals, five clinical departments and five different health professions.ResultsWe present the activity systems involved in the integration process and the contradiction that arose between them as the innovations were introduced in the workplace. The findings depict how the faculty development participants and the clinicians teaching in the workplace interacted to overcome this contradiction through iterative processes of negotiating a mandate for change, reconceptualising the innovation in response to workplace reactions, and reconciliation as temporary equilibria between the systems.ConclusionThe study depicts the complexities of how educational change is brought about in the workplace after faculty development. Based on our findings and the activity theoretical concept of knotworking, we suggest that these complex processes may be understood as collaborative knotworking between faculty development participants and workplace staff through which both the output from faculty development and the workplace practices are transformed. Increasing our awareness of these intricate processes is important for enhancing our ability to make faculty development reach its full potential in bringing educational change in practice.

Project description:BackgroundIn order to prepare current and future educators and clinicians to lead interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP), faculty and staff need training in collaborative approaches to developing, implementing, assessing, and sustaining high quality IPE across the interprofessional learning continuum. The Train-the-Trainer Interprofessional Team Development Program (T3-ITDP) is a 3.5-day program designed to develop expert IPE teams through interactive workshops, coaching, and the development and implementation of an IPE or IPCP (IPECP) project for their home institutions.PurposeThe purpose of this research was to assess the impact of the T3-ITDP on the development and implementation of IPECP projects by participating teams.MethodsThe T3-ITDP impact survey was created and administered to collect data on the scope and impact of participant teams' projects, including learner and project outcomes, training methods, dissemination plans, assessment strategies, and teams' intentions to continue working together beyond the initial project. With human subject's approval, we invited 55 T3-ITDP participant teams to complete the impact survey. These teams were at least one year post-completion of the in-person portion of the program and thus had time to initiate their IPECP projects.ResultsForty-one (74.5%) teams responded to the survey. Of those teams, 31 (76%) used T3-ITDP content and/or approaches to develop their IPECP projects that targeted learners across the interprofessional learning continuum. Sustainability of IPECP projects was supported through several mechanisms, including institutional support or incorporating IPECP activities into existing courses. Almost half of the teams worked together on new projects, and 74% of teams planned to repeat a newly developed activity.Discussion & conclusionsResults of the T3-ITDP impact survey demonstrated that team-based, project-focused professional development catalyzed the development, implementation, and sustainment of new IPECP projects at academic and community institutions throughout the U.S.

Project description:BackgroundIntegration of clinical medicine and other subjects has laid more emphasis on the cultivation of high-quality medical talents, with the increasing demand for interprofessional education (IPE). IPE has been promoted by a number of universities to create and sustain authentic IPE activities, with which students can engage. Although IPE has achieved certain results, there are still many problems. Many studies focused on the perspective of educators without understanding the essential needs and experience of students. This study intends to focus on the implementation of IPE from the perspective of medical students.PurposeTo describe the interprofessional experiences of medical students and provide a reference for the development of interprofessional education programs for medical students.MethodsA descriptive qualitative study was conducted in 2023, using purposive sampling to select medical students who had interprofessional learning experiences for semi-structured interviews. The study used a phenomenological approach and Colaizzi's phenomenological method for analyzing and summarizing the interprofessional experiences and perceptions to extract themes.ResultsThe interprofessional experiences of medical students were distilled into five themes: "cognition and attitude", "practice and collaboration", "motivation and drive", "difficulty and challenge", and "expectation and vision". Students reported their experience and found interprofessional learning beneficial for broadening their horizon and building harmonious healthcare teams. Based on the experience of interprofessional learning, students also put forward expectations and ideas for IPE especially for medical students.ConclusionEach institution should establish a complete interprofessional education system in accordance with the professional education system of students, to achieve interprofessional education for medical students that adapts to the national conditions of China, and to better improve the overall quality of future medical service teams, to achieve patient-centered high-quality care experience.Trial registrationNot applicable.

Project description:Background: Clinicians in their role as teachers and medical faculties were struggling to address the medical students' needs regarding their medical education in times of COVID-19. They were especially confronted with several challenges regarding what medical training should look like and how to transfer medical training to integrate relevant skills like interpersonal or practical competencies. This study aimed to investigate the teachers' perspectives on medical education and COVID-19 in general, including their distress level. Methods: This quantitative questionnaire study was distributed online among responsible lecturers of medical training at the Medical Faculty of Tuebingen. Teachers answered questions about the medical training, COVID-19 in general (on a seven point- Likert scale from "not at all" to "completely") and their mental well-being (STAI). Descriptive data analysis and t-tests were performed. Results: The teachers reported being significantly (p<.01) more distressed regarding the medical training (M=4.63, SD=1.24) in comparison to their private lives (M=3.58, SD=1.38) or the clinical context (M=3.33, SD=1.95). They also felt significantly less informed about the medical training in times of COVID-19 (p<.001). They wished for more support and information from their medical faculty. When teachers were asked which teaching should be implemented in future, they reported the most the online lectures (87.5%), followed by collaborative working (75.5%), live broadcast (62.5%) and online chats (58.3%). Teachers also saw the current situation of COVID-19 as a chance for a digital transformation of the medical education (M=5.92, SD=0.95). Discussion: Teachers of the Medical Faculty of Tuebingen saw online-based teaching formats as a chance to meet the medical students' needs regarding the medical education. Video-based formats like online lecturers and online chats with teachers might play a relevant role in order to impart knowledge. Furthermore, medical students should also be taught in digital formats like telehealth, including patient-physician distance interactions.
